Silicon Image Announces Industry's First Receiver to Incorporate the Latest
Features of HDMI v1.2 Specification

SiI 9033 Enables AV Receivers to Support All High End Audio Standards for
Purest All-Digital Multimedia Experience for Consumers

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Silicon Image,
(Nasdaq: SIMG), a leader in multi-gigabit semiconductor solutions for the
secure transmission and storage of rich digital media, today announced the SiI
9033, the industry's first High Definition Multimedia Interface(TM) (HDMI)
receiver to add Super Audio CD (SACD) capability in support of HDMI v1.2
specification. The SiI 9033 enables consumer electronics manufacturers to
build systems which support all hi-end audio, from DVD-Audio to SACD resulting
in the purest all-digital, multimedia experience for consumers.
HDMI has emerged as the de facto digital interface standard for the
consumer electronics market, delivering secure audio and video transmission.
The latest HDMI specification, HDMI v1.2, adds a number of important features
that contribute to the ongoing evolution of the standard. By delivering
crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video quality via a single cable, HDMI
dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the
highest-quality home theater experience.
The SACD format was developed by Sony and Philips Electronics and is an
enhanced audio standard that allows for higher resolution of music, resulting
in remarkably faithful and pure audio reproduction. In addition to enhanced
sound quality, the SACD format can accommodate more than four times the
information of current CD formats, allowing multimedia, multi-channel data to
be stored on CDs.
With the introduction of the first SACD enabled HDMI receiver to
incorporate HDMI v1.2, Silicon Image continues to provide leadership in
supporting the evolution of the market for HDMI," explains Rob Frizzell,
senior marketing manager, Silicon Image. "The SiI 9033 is the third generation
of HDMI receivers produced by Silicon Image, at an even lower cost than the
previous generation, which demonstrates a remarkable amount of progress in a
short period of time. Ultimately, consumers benefit from this ongoing progress
towards the purest multimedia experience."
The SiI 9033 is targeted at consumer electronics manufacturers developing
AV Receivers and Media Receivers. It is a dual-input receiver, which is
backwards compatible with the earlier generation SiI 9031 but adds SACD
support on top of DVD-Audio. High-quality digital audio up to 8-channel,
192kHz can be output on its four I2S outputs. High-bandwidth Digital Content
Protection(TM) (HDCP) Repeater functionality is integrated into the device as
well as embedded HDCP keys, providing the most secure environment at the
lowest cost. All past and present Silicon Image receivers continue to be
compliant with the stringent electrical requirements of HDMI v1.2.

Pricing and Availability
The SiI 9033 will begin sampling in October. Pricing is available upon
request. Please contact Silicon Image at www.siliconimage.com for more
information.

I was just thinking about this very subject on my drive to work this
morning!

Are there already players that support SACD over HDMI?

So, someday, we should see HDDVD or Blueray players that also do SACD or
DVD-Audio, all over hdmi...or a universal player from korea that does
them all! Then we'll just need a receiver that has hdmi switching, and a
tv with hdmi. I wonder how far away we are from that.

Better yet, I wonder what the computer industry's plans are for hdmi. I
bet Hollywood is not looking forward to an HDMI card being put in a pc
and the signal decryption work starting...it's only a matter of time.

Jason,

Now, is a matter of manufacturers implementing the chip for consumers to been able to buy equipment
capable to handle the capabilities. It will take some time but the industry is on the right track.

As you might recall, last year it was wrongly claimed that HDMI was not able to be more than stereo
on certain TVs, I had a long talk with Silicon Image and wrote the outcome on the CES 2005 report
(under digital connectivity), the claim was because those manufacturers were implementing old
generation HDMI receiver chips and also limiting their input stage to two channel, not because of
the specification or the chip or the HDMI cable, the sending equipment HDMI output does a hand shake
with the receiving device to determine what to send based on the capabilities of the receiving
device, two channel on those TVs on this case.

You are correct in the sense that thru this single chip one could receive the two competitor
multi-channel audio formats, in addition to the HD competitors Blu-ray and HD DVD with all their
audio and video codecs.

How far away? depends on your upgrading pocket (and how willing you are to play the game).

Regarding the computer industry and HDMI, based on what the MPAA and the RIAA efforts (broadcast
flag and the Hi Def DVD new protection methods to mention the most recent) and considering what MS
is doing with copy protection, anyone could anticipate what direction IT would take.

Regardless your HD infrastructure (PC or HT) the law compliant consumer would be in a straight
jacket, while pirates would still investing fortunes in "abling" devices and keep doing what they
want anyway, Norwegian programmers or not.

Rodolfo La Maestra
