I submit this may be of interest to others here who are dismayed when
fellow homo sapiens profess they cannot see the difference between HD
and SD television pictures. (we all have such stories, right?)

The article suggests that HD radio is suffering far more than HDTV ever
did. Pearls before swine, say I.

Richard,

Excellent, well taken points.

Here in Phoenix, the number of HD stations has multiplied over the past
year. Notwithstanding your observations about MP3 streams, etc., to me,
the sound quality of these HD-broadcasting stations improved even
without using an HD receiver. In particular, the golden oldies on KOOL
sound more detailed with better separation of the instruments and better
defined bass, particularly the material from the late 60s onward. Maybe
it's "just my imagination" ;-) but they sound better to me. Is it
technically possible that conversion to HD would improve how we receive
the standard FM signal?

slightly better sounding AC station in HD if they can hear a completely
acceptable sounding AC station on FM. It comes in better and doesn't
cost anything.

Top all that off, quality audio is fading along with the generation that
wanted it. I never would have thought that the day would come that music
is delivered by ipods and MP3 while motion picture soundtracks use HD
audio codecs.

WOW.... :(

I am sure there is improvement but how much? Recall for HDTV the
pioneers insisted it had to be 5 times better than NTSC for consumers to
pay the price.

Where is the improvement? Separation big time! FM is no better than 20db
for left right. If they also stopped running dynamic range compression
there is another.

Since you are having the experience please tell us... is it 5 times
better than FM?

Thanks

Reading over what you said let me try again... ;)

Yes, the analog delivery could easily be improved by using the same feed
for the digital broadcast for the analog. Note the last post on that
thread from a station engineer...

FM does not have to sound bad and can sound quite good... The story
parallels NTSC and 480p done right - that always makes a difference! I
suggest with digital that is what is happening hence the feed comment.

Thanks for the additional info.

I would not say that the analog broadcasts taken from a digital feed now
sound five times better than before. Hard to quantify, but maybe 50% or
75% better. It was enough to induce me to listen to these stations more
often. Fortunately, the stations are highly diverse, so depending on
mood there is a lot to choose from.

I do not have satellite radio, so I can't compare the sound quality in
those broadcasts. Is that signal anything like DVD-A or SACD?

Richard,

I know you are still into quality audio....don't give up. If Sony was smart
they would get High Res Audio going on to Blu-ray....I'm still hoping they
do!

I like to listen to SmoothJazz.com....they have a site (Octoshape) where you
can log onto for free that generates commercial free Jazz @ 192Kbps.

Sounds pretty good for internet radio!

Cheers,

Larry

Skip,

You don't mean XM or Sirus Radio do you? They both sound horrible!

I can't even listen in my Wife's car to XM....AM radio puts it to shame!

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Larry,

No, as I mention I have not listened to satellite. But our digitally
fed analog broadcasts sound remarkably better than they did before
switching to dual HD and SD fm formats.

Skip,

You don't mean XM or Sirus Radio do you? They both sound horrible!

I can't even listen in my Wife's car to XM....AM radio puts it to shame!

Reading over what you said let me try again... ;)

Yes, the analog delivery could easily be improved by using the same feed
for the digital broadcast for the analog. Note the last post on that
thread from a station engineer...

FM does not have to sound bad and can sound quite good... The story
parallels NTSC and 480p done right - that always makes a difference! I
suggest with digital that is what is happening hence the feed comment.
