So Mark Cuban says online guides are on the way out ...

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

What do you think?

Is there value in an online guide (like our flagship product), or is it
becoming less and less useful with all the built-in guides in STBs these
days? While reading this, several questions came to mind:

1) Should we (HDTV Magazine) be in the online guide business? The data
is quite expensive. Well over half of our total income last year was
spent on guide data.
2) Is an online guide useful in general? Or do you prefer the on-screen
guides?

If you are a paid subscriber:
3) How often do you look at our guide? Daily, once a week, never?
4) For what reason did you subscribe? Was it the online guide, the daily
emails, store discounts?
5) If you do use the guide regularly, what are your favorite features?
What do you find yourself most interested in?

If you are not a subscriber:
6) What is the primary reason?
7) Are there features we could add (anything that comes to mind) that
would be worth a subscription, or would increase our value?

NOTE: Please do not sugar-coat your answers. I am looking for honest
feedback. It would be better if any criticisms were constructive, but
they need not be. If you would feel more comfortable sending in your
answers anonymously, you can use the online feedback form:
http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/help/feedback.php

If the response to these questions is intriguing enough, I may send it
out to our larger list as an official survey.

1. I would rather see these funds (and the associated manhours) used
elsewhere (news, tutorials on HD topics, education of the public, etc.).
2. When I do access the online guide (which is very seldom), I have
found it very useful. The vast majority of the time I use an on-screen
guide.
3. Very seldom.
4. News, tips, daily e-mails.
5. N/A

1) No, I rarely use the online guide. When I need a guide, I can use
TitanTV or some other source. Use the money for other efforts
2) I typically use the on-screen guide.
3) A few times a month, I review the online guide to see if I can
spot something interesting to record.
4) Tips list, expert opinions
5)

I never signed up for the guide. Tried a couple times early on.

I've used either TitanTV, or mostly Zap2It.

I also use the on-screen guide from the cable box.

I got used to using Zap2It before the HDTV Guide was enhanced. I don't know if the HDTV Guide is still just HD content, but I liked Zap2It as it would show all content (SD and HD, and indicate which is which), and color coded programs based on content category. Another thing I like about Zap2It is the ability to customize the channels, both which ones are listed as well as the order that they appear (I don't know if the HDTV Guide can do this or not). Zap2It is able to provide the channel numbering based on the system and my location (cable, vs broadcast vs satellite).

I think HDTV Magazine should focus more on tracking developments in the HD market rather than the guide, but that's just my opinion.

1) I use the guide, and I love it, but would I miss it? No, because I have
alternatives. The STB guide is only OK, but it lets us DVR with the click
of a button. No one can beat that.
2) I use the on-screen guide first and mostly only, but at least once a week
click on a link that takes me to the on-line guide, and it is nice back-up.
Probably not worth that extra cost, though.
3) Paid, and I use the on-screen guide every day, but on-line 1-2X a week.
4) I like the tips and the on-line news. The guide is a bonus. More store
discounts, like group buys would be better. Spotties get cable discounts,
but I think we should do better.
5) Programming content info, but I can get that elsewhere too. It is
convenient have one source to go to, but I'd rather go for news and
discounts than the guide. But don't get me wrong; I have enjoyed the guide
while it last(s)(ed).

I read the guide every day . It is very useful
especially with the summertime highlighting of what's
actually new. The fact that you can set it to display
new hd only programs is a true value add, especially
in season . On screens guide are useful when actually
watching tv They provide little info as to "is it new"
and excel in what most love. It's free.

I subscribe because of the value of Dale and Rudfolo ,
the interviews and access to Mark Shubin report. Your
own talents have contributed to making it a high end
product.

Personally am not internet shopper so the store does
not catch much attention and only provides shopping
data, . More into valid reviews of quality pruduct
where price is only part of the package not as many
make it , the reason .

Would you clarify as to whether the guide can be used
to search for specific show ?

Our next major initiative is to create a dedicated "Reviews" section.
This would contain reviews aggregated from other publications as well as
HDTV Magazine originals.

Regarding "Guide Search": There is a rudimentary search available now:
http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/programming/search.php, but our plans are to
expand this greatly to allow for keyword-based program alerts and new
episode notifications for members.

I use the guide every day. It guides my decisions as to what and when
to watch.

I particularly like the date-first-broadcast feature.

All the STB's I have with their guides are fine, but do not give me as
much information, provided when and where I want.

Shane,

I would prefer to see the time and money spent on educational items and
reviews by our members on various HDTV's and other associated equipment. I
have never used the guide and only looked at it a few times. Just don't
need it. Tips is great and it is the big draw for me.

Regards,
Hugh

All of my HD content comes from the internet, so I don't need a guide.

I would agree with George that I never use the Guide like I did when HDTV
was in its infancy 5-6 years ago.

I simply treasure the information disseminated by all the members with much
appreciation for the knowledge that Rodolfo/Dale and Brand/Repair knowledge
that Richard shares with us.

I really do appreciate all the work that the HDTV staff contributes.

I know Rodolfo scribes for other A/V mags but I'd be willing to pay for the
combo of Rodolfo and Richard reviewing the latest Display's and their
associated +/- technologies but something tells me their geographical
limitations would put a kink in this thought.

Shane,
1. To me, it would be a shame to abandon the guide after all the history
and development time to get it to where it is today. That being said,
sometimes the realities of business have to govern. I'd be sorry to see it
go, but I woudn't want it to stay at the expense of the great information
being disseminated from the site.
2. I use both (see #5).
3. I use it pretty much daily.
4. Mostly for the guide and the tips list.
5. My Dish Network guide doesn't have info for PBS-HD or my local CW
affiliate (for some reason). This wouldn't be a big deal in and of itself,
but it's great to get a "prime-time preview" every day to check for things
I should be recording or viewing. The "original air date" information is
also great, as well as the "rollover synopsis."

Keep up the good work!

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

1. I remember & understand the effort and resources that were needed to make the on-line guide a reality. I will take advantage of it for as long as it is available. It is not why I subscribed. I will continue as a subscriber if it is dropped.
2. I prefer On-screen guides (cable & OTA) for daily scheduling.
3. I access the online guide about once a week for general schedule info and about twice a twice a month to 'look ahead' for HD movies to record (from cable & OTA).
4. For the excellent technical advice & reviews. Needed a lot of it back in 2000/1 and am afraid I may be on the verge of needing it again... looking for the next HDTV...
5. I like only 'seeing' the channels I'm interested in. Especially like the search capability. Also appreciate seeing the 'original air date' in the program info... my cable guide doesn't display/indicate re-runs.

I haven't used this as a guide in a long time. HD is now all over at least
in this market and the on line guides cover it well.

Prefer on screen guides.

Never

Originally I subscribed for the guides and the email traffic and
information. The email traffic continues to be interesting at times.
