----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Does anyone on the list own or have experience with
the Sony HDR-SR1 HDD camcorder? The software and
manuals that come with the camera are vague and
ineffective.

I can play what I shoot directly from the camcorder to
my TV with beautiful results and I can copy to the
hard drive on my computer but once the movies are on
my computer I am unable to transfer them to DVD. Also
when I try to use the "Player For AVCHD" to play the
movies on my computer hard drive the results are
extremely jittery.

Do I need a Blu-Ray or HDDVD recorder to transfer
images to DVD or is this AVCHD format too new to have
the necessary hardware available to do the job?

Any help would be much appreciated as I like the
camcorder very much and don't want to return it to
Sony.

I have "played" with one of these and I do know you need a Blu-Ray player
when viewing if you don't connect directly to your TV. I would therefore
assume you'd need a Blu-ray recorder to download to DVD via your computer.

And the jitter is quite likely due to your PC not being "powerful"
enough to keep up with the playback. Same thing happens on my laptop
when I try to ply 720p video.

Shane - How much power should I have? My current cpu
is Intel P4 3.0 GHZ. I don't keep up with computer
technology so I don't know what's what. Can you
advise?

That should be in the ballpark, but to be sure, go to Task Manager
(right click on Task Bar, then choose Task Manager), and see how much
your CPU is being used while playing back. If it's at 100%, you are
probably cpu bound - although an updated codec (software needed to
playback that format) could help. also make sure you don't have a lot of
stuff running in the background.

I'm not familiar with that camera, but what kind of files are they
outputting? If they are .ts files, try PowerDVD or WinDVD, both should
handle them.

Not sure to be honest. It would vary slightly by encoding scheme. Here's
a reference page from Microsoft on what is required to play back their
VC1 encoded video:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx#sysreq>

Does your software documentation give any hint to system requirements
for playback?

BTW, my laptop is a 2GHz.

Cheers,

Shane Sturgeon

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

It appears my computer is on the low end of system
requirements. Intel Core Duo 1.66 GHz or faster is
recommended.

The file type is.m2ts. I checked on Power DVD and the
deluxe version supposedly supports avchd but they
won't allow me to download a trial version of the that
program. I think Adobe and several other software
manufacturers will soon be supporting this new format
so I guess I will sit and wait.

In the meantime I think I will upgrade my PC to Duo
Core with a blu-ray burner. My current system is
almost three years old so it is time for an upgrade.

Thank you Hugh, Shane and Jason for your help.

Best regards,

Joe Soprano
