Sony STR V444Es and switcher

Hi:

It appears that I will need to add Comcast to my Dish installation, in
large part just to receive ABC HD, which will be offered to cable subs
but not OTA!

As a result, I will need a way to switch the component video signals of
the Comcast box and my DVD to share a component input on my Hitachi
plasma. (My DISH 6000 output is connected with a 15 pin cable.)

I could use the switching capability of my Sony STR V444ES receiver, but
I suspect that the Sony has insufficient bandwidth to do the job (I have
not tried it, and Sony won't tell me what it is).

Q1. Does anyone know if the Sony has sufficient bandwidth so that the PQ
will not suffer?

Q2. Can someone suggest a switcher appropriate to switching component
video (the audio will be handled by the SONY).

Howard,

On the Sony website the product is not available any longer but I was able to download the pdf of
the user manual

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-doc ... =STRV444ES

The first page shows a date of 2000, which is about the time when many people showed concern with
their receivers because only a few were able to support the high bandwidth required by HDTV over
component analog, at that time the spec that was tossed around was minimum 30 MHz.

With time the requirements were raised to 100 MHz with +- 3 dB variance, in other words, with such
variance I would not want anything lower than 60 MHz, remember we are talking about specs of 5 years
ago, now there are switchers that go to 300 MHz to make sure every drop of that signal is passed.

Additionally, the specs on page 59 of your manual are not specific regarding the bandwidth (other
than the 75 ohm of YPbPr).

Also, looking at the picture of the back of your unit, I could tell that the two component analog
inputs were labeled for lower bandwidth connections (DVD/LD, etc).

Based upon the 3 items above I find very unlikely that the receiver would be able to pass a HDTV
signal to its fullest, so I suggest a good switcher (or upgrade the receiver with the money of the
switcher).

There are many out there that could do a decent job, check the Model 1154A for $219
https://www.audioauthority.com/indexh.php it has high bandwidth for HD, although I am sure there are
quite a few tipsters that would suggest other brands and cheaper prices, make sure you check the
specs before buying a low price product.

Rodolfo La Maestra

I use the Inday RGB-4 and love it. It has 4 inputs, 1 output for my
dish/cable/media player/dvhs and looks great. I see no difference
between direct connect and through the inday unit. You can order direct
from inday.com and get free shipping. I believe I paid $129.

I have an INDAY I don't use anymore That I would sell for a descent price.
Now that I got my 1080P DLP set, I only have one piece of equipment that I
use component out switch now, so I don't use the INDAY component video
switcher anymore. I am still using the INDAY audio switcher, but once I get
the DVDO VP30, I guess I won't need that anymore either since it is supposed
to convert the audio over HDMI to optical/coaxial out.

Hi Aaron - I just bought my unit and could return it minus shipping.
What would you be asking for yours, and does it have the remote?

I just ordered an Audio Authority 1154A from copperbox.com for $159.
Bandwidth on the component video is 120Mhz -3db. It switches 4 inputs
including audio coax and toslink and autoselects active input with
ability to prioritize which input to check first (I figure to have it
check DVD first and HR10-250 second so if dvd is on it will select it
otherwise the HR10-250 so my wife can stop complaining about all the
remotes and having to turn on 3 things to watch tv...)

I own one of those as well, and have no complaints.

The only thing I've noticed is that if I lose power, I sometimes have to
unplug the unit and plug it back in to get it to recognize (switch to) some
of my devices again.
