Sony SXRD

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I did not state that they will not stock the bulb. The 4th (going up the
chain) and last person I spoke to said they typically do continue support.
However, they do refuse to make a public or written statement to that
effect - that they will continue support. And they are incredibly arrogant.
The only obligation they were willing to make was to the one year warranty.
It is a great TV for the money. I have friends who have recently purchased
it upon my recommendation and if they would make the right public statement,
I would advise others to get one at much reduced prices. I do not like to
be dependant upon their whim. I did not think a written statement was too
much to ask for.

Unfortunately no manufacturer has an obligation to provide parts expect

The abandonment of RPTV in any form has been well known within the
industry for a year. Mits claims they think they still have an edge in $
per inch, which they and Samsung do so far, yet note the minimum size
went up to 55". Both are also invested in new applications to replace
the lamp, Samsung with their not so well performing 1st gen LED and Mits
with their yet to be unveiled laser. Still having difficulty turning a
perfect column of light into a uniform scatter for the DMD last I heard.
Both appear to want to continue. Mits is very intersting since at this
time they have little to offer in the flat panel line but who's to say
next model season we won't see a dramatic shift from them. JVC shrunk
their DiLA product to about 6-8 inches providing a very thick flat panel
look to try and compete and make some more money on their technology.
Nothing official from Hitachi or Panasonic yet.

What I have heard nothing of is how this is affecting TI... Rodolfo?
Thinking about it Mits and Sasung were likely their largest mass market
customers and they are still in... Toshiba bowed out though...

Sony and many others had to have already decided within 2-3 years ago to
drop the line, typical R&D time for new product you get today, the
writing was on the wall back then simply looking at the trends. None of
the RPTV players increased volume this year due to the lack of
product... yes, the market has decided they want them as big and flat as
possible; often times regardless of price.

Funny you should bring this up.

For the last couple of weeks, I have had an awful greenish-yellowish push to
the picture that I couldn't adjust using the remote. I have an SXRD 60" (XBR
1 I believe). Called Sony and they referred me to a service center. Service
rep called me to tell me that he was 99% sure it was a failure in a "color
block" module that Sony has acknowledged to the point of extending all
warranties on this to late 2008. Someone is supposed to come out here soon
to check it out and replace the unit.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

The bulbs will be available as close to forever as we will ever live. They
are a product of Philips and sold around the world for various duties. A
company as big as Sony with so much to lose in international reputation by
ill-considered policy will not leave you abandoned for the price of stocking
a half million bulbs, as you predict. I quite frankly don't understand the
negative attitude you express towards Sony. I trust it is from being hurt by
that company. Can you tell us of your personal experiences.? That would be
invaluable feedback and we are connected at the VP level of corporate
Communications and can see to it that legitimate grievances such as yours
are directed to decision makers. They have been a company with an arrogant
attitude for years and perhaps a well documented and terse statement will
aid them in making some better decisions. You say with an accusing finger
that they have "dropped numerous products when it suits the bottom line." I
was wondering if perhaps the public whims might have something to do with
that? I know that Sony was very deeply committed to the SXRD (I own two
myself) but try as they might with a great product we (meaning the public)
didn't buy enough of them and we (the public) did turn increasingly to LCDs,
which is a movement in us that seems to have caught the attention of Sony.
What would you have them do? Would you think it in the best interest of the
industry, the public, and that company to devote capital to a failing
product or apply that same capital to improving (for competitive reasons, of
course) a direction which we (the public) are demanding and buying?

While we do live in an age of nearly instant global communications, I find
that it still takes several weeks for a major corporate decision, such as
this one to drop rear projection, to reach into the rank and file where
things like you are requesting are handled. It is too bad they didn't just
put up a web page and declare their intentions, thus giving their service
sector something to say and putting their customers at ease. I know that's
what you and I would do if only we ran one of these multi-billion dollar
technical behemoths. As far as you making a decision about Blu ray or HD DVD
over this particular incident, that truly amazes me. It illustrates how
irrational it was of the consumer electronics industry to turn this decision
over to the public. I have chastised without letup this industry for two
years for not having the maturity to make this high def DVD decision for us
and not leave it in the hands of those who might make choices entirely apart
from merit.
