Has anyone used this new device to calibrate their LCD picture screen from
www.colorvision.com

I realize it can't match a personal visit from a certified installer but for
people who do not live in large metropolitan could this be helpful?

I also understand they are coming out with a product called SpyderTV in
August which will help calibrate all Plasma, RPTV, DLP, LCD and CRT TVs for
Home Theater.

It was discussed very briefly during a technology segment on local TV.

The SpyderTV costs $200 after a 25% discount.........if you add three
hundred more you can get a full calibration done by a pro. I wouldn't waste
my money on it until someone I know has used it and says it is better than
the Joe Kane's DVD. I think it is a halfway measure.

According to my colleagues currently this device does little for you
except perhaps for making the customer controls settings easier if you
do not get what the calibration discs are trying to teach you in this
regard. One would also have to have service menu access to fully use the
product, a dicey proposition. The sensor is old stuff that most
calibrators have already replaced with new technology that provides far
more accuracy. That means if you had the access there is a good chance
you would create the wrong response even though the numbers are telling
you it is correct.

ISF calibrators spend a huge amount of time figuring out all the
pitfalls of the test equipment and your particular display so an
accurate response can be delivered. As Hugh points out you would be
better served taking your $200 and applying it to having your display
calibrated by an experienced professional instead.

For a calibrator near you check www.isfforum.com

Thanks Richard,

Until recently there no ISF calibrators in my area.I followed your link and
it looks like Dave Hancock has thrown his hat in the ring which now gives me
a choice to hire one.

Um, this is a calibrator for digital pre-press, computer design.
This is what the magazines, newspapers, design, computer design, use
to calibrate there monitors so that what the designer creates in
Photoshop, Quark, etc. comes out from the printer just as they saw.
This is certianly new since the design community is only just getting
into LCD displays since CRT is still the king. These are the people
that buy the $5000 calibrated CRT monitors from Bryco, etc..
Not sure if this would work well for Home Theater. It will make sure
your monitor has correct grey levels 6500K is the Mac standard, but,
you'd likely need to specify, as for other colors? And, you need the
display hooked up to a computer to make the software work.

Per the site they are talking about consumer displays. For LCD flat
panel we have to use a special probe for LCD only.

Your point does stick though with a PC monitor where you would be able
to adjust color temperature using the software for your video card. This
is something you can do already with a number of programs without a
probe and get it fairly close.

Sorry Dave,

I know we have talked on the phone but I when we did 5/2004 I thought you
told me that you were thinking about doing ISF work sometime in the future
and that presently you were only dabbling in it.

I am starting to build a home in the coming weeks and when I'm done I will
call you to set things up. I have a few TV's that will need calibrating and
will try to talk friends I know into the virtues having it done. Not many
follow technological improvements like the members of this tips list.
