We just came from a performance of Star Wars that was shown at essentially
the first DLP theatre, the Cinemax in Plano, Texas, which happens to be a
few blocks away from the Texas Instruments laboratories that developed the
DLP technology.

Most of the DLP equipment is still owned by TI (because of its enormous
expense), and is leased/loaned to the theatres (that is according to an
acquaintance of mine who works for TI. In fact, there are several movies
available that can take advantage of the DLP technology (Hitchhikers Guide
to the Galaxy was also shot digitally).

I don't know how other theatres are, but the Plano Cinemark experience was
great.. probably because the TI people are always at the theatre tweaking
the equipment (it also serves as a laboratory for TI)

On another note... watched the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing
yesterday. Was somewhat shocked that it was not in HD. The Coca Cola 600
(NASCAR) was in HD (and looked great), but Indy was not. Very disappointed
in ABC

I went and saw it with my roommate on Monday, at the local San Jose
cinema (said to have the lastest Sony projector). And, it's best to
sit back about 10 rows or so, because sitting in the second row the
screen-door-effect was quite apparent when the scene was just right,
and it's best to have good sound the right channel kept cutting in
and out.
But, when I was not focusing on SDE, I must say I was really
impressed. The picture was so unbeliveablely clear, and the colors
were very good. As, for the movie, well Lucas is no Mammet, or
Tarintino;)

Yeah, my roommate's twin brother was over and was astounded that it
wasn't in HD--there was lots of talk on AVS about it, mostly
centering on how the race organizer IRL has been falling down on most
everything and getting HD was just a sign of their failures. And, I
noticed that the Nascar race that day was in HD.

Eric,

I have not seen it there yet, but I am told the best place to see the
digital Star Wars (in our area) is the Sony Metreon in the City!

Yeah, but, that takes a trip to the City, I get enough traffic in my
area. And, I'm pretty sure they also have the good projector.
Though I maybe going to the City for a jazz concert--live music is
usually worth the trip.

Eric,

Speaking of Jazz, I'm sure everyone on the tips is pretty sick of my Diana
Krall rants but saw her at the Nob Hill Theater in the city a couple years
ago and it was most excellent.

It takes about an hour for me(no traffic) to get there. It's usually worth
it if you are going too be entertained for three or so hours.

Currently I've got everyone around me mesmerized by Jane Monheit (she
does the 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' on 'Sky Captian..' though not
her best version). We've seen her twice at Yoshi's by Jack London
Square in Oakland. It really is amazing to watch someone who has
great control of their voice (my Sister-in-law, a voice major,
usually sits there slack-jawed the whole time).

as for The Bad Plus, great jazz trio, does Nirvana and Radiohead
covers, but there own stuff is pretty lively--missed them at the
Monteray Jazz Festival. Another similar group I just picked up is
the Tord Gustufsen Trio, on ECM not usually a very approachable label.
