The 1080P60 Myth

I have a challenge for the techies that lurk on this list. Try and find
1080P60 on any version of the ATSC Table 3. Then try to find any signal
source (camera, video recorder, disk array, HD DVD or Blue Ray, signal
generator, network, television/film post production company, etc.) that
conforms to the 1080P60 image format. A little clue: the widest
digital bandwidth for any LISTED format in Table 3 is 1.5gB (before any
of the massive transmission compression schemes); the digital bandwidth
for 1080P60 is double that number, at 3 gB. Not being on ATSC Table 3
probably dooms 1080P60 for at least 7-10 years as a usable imaging format.

So why is it bad to have more display capability than you need? For the
same reason that "uprezzing" of lower resolution formats has always
yielded just awfully mediocre results, the format conversion of lower
order HD signals (1080i60 and 720P60) to 1080P60 will introduce
artifacts that will simply obviate the good intentions of having a
higher order display.

George,

I completely concur. 1080P60 is not on the ATSC table 3, only 1080/24P and 1080/30i & P. However, that is the broadcast standard, which I also agree everything SHOULD follow.

That's not to say that 1080P60 couldn't be achieved locally (i.e. DVD to TV, or Game Console to TV) if manufactures chose to do so.

the main problem is content... Most content is 24 frame film.

I agree. If anything, I see the game console's going 1080/60p before
anything else.
