PureLink makes a DVI to VGA converter that *may* bypass HDCP, allowing us
older display owners to use the dvi output on cable boxes, etc, then the VGA
port of the TV. With a VGA to component video converter, you could use the
component video inputs.

When I say it *may* work with hdcp equipment, that's because their engineer
said it would work, but would not go into any detail - as if they are flying
under the radar of the mpaa, etc.

I am in the process of obtaining one and am a dealer. The issue is due to
the chips that were sent to the company. These critical chip used in the
conversion process inadvertently included HDCP recognition and decryption,
which allows the DVI signal to pass through to the VGA output. One of their
product's consumers notified them of the capability. They notified the chip
supplier but their supplier didn't want to take the chips back and reimburse
them for their trouble. This means there is a limited number of these units
available, then they're gone. The device's manufacturer cannot legally
advertise this capability. If anyone on the Tips List wants one from me,
they can send me an e-mail. I'll let you know what my test results are as
soon as I get the sample and comfirm the claim.

I didn't know that there was a vga to component video converter. As far as
RGBHV, I don't know I'll have to check the manual when I get home. It's a

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Anthony,

You definitely have an RGBHV input option on your TV. It's a 5 RCA jack
input option that doubles as component video on the red, green and blue
jacks. The extra 2 jacks are usually black and white, used for verticle and
horizontal sync signals, typically marked H and V. You can get VGA (D-Sub
15) breakout cables that have a male VGA plug on one end and 5 BNC or RCA
male plugs on the other end. It's available to have custom lengths made up
with such a configuration, also.

One of the extra benefits of using the RGBHV input on the Mitsubishis is
that you bypass their stupid color decoder. This bypasses the "red push"
Mits uses in a feeble attempt to compensate for too blue of a color
temperature.

Key Digital makes a very nice VGA to component converter for folks who may
not have a VGA or RGBHV input on their TV. I can help you obtain these
other accessory options if needed.

Best regards and beautiful pictures,

I didn't know that there was a vga to component video converter. As far as
RGBHV, I don't know I'll have to check the manual when I get home. It's a
2002 Mits Diamond.

You sure Alan?

Anothony, if you are in RGB or RGBHV mode (will need to switch that in
the menu or you will get a strange looking picture) and find a color and
tint control then it is not a true RGB display which is how I thought
all Mits was... that means the color errors remain unless you had that
input calibrated.

Maybe that chassis is different. In theory, RGB should be free of color
processing. If only a component signal is routed through those three RCAs
on that input, there may still be color processing of some kind engaged.
It's been so long since I worked on one of those, I think the TV recognizes
a true RGBHV input signal and passes it through. It may require a special
manual menu selection.

Most if not all CRT based RPTV Mitsubishi's convert the RGB input to
component for internal processing. There is therefore no significant
benefit (and in fact a negative, the RGB->component conversion that
must take place) to feeding them RGB unless that is the only option.

Richard - if his source outputs in the YPbPr colorspace (same as component
video?), then he'd need a transcoder, right? My old dtc-100 output RGB, but
most sources output component/YPbPr, correct?

So I wonder what the PureLink uses...

Where ya been? :)

PureLink makes a box that passes encrypted HDCP signals through to analog
displays due to a manufacturing issue (see Alan's post about the specifics
of the now out-of-production version).

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Ah... the first post from you.... it is a brand...

I was skimming... what a screw up :)

Lucky for us!

It serves one purpose and one purpose only... turns DVI/HDMI into analog
for those displays with analog only inputs that we like and do not wish
to part with quite yet like a Sony G90 or my Mits V18 (notice I am on
both ends of performance envelope ;) ).

Could be a handy and simple check for DVI/HDMI response testing for me!

That will be one of the first tests; analog video frequency response

You've worked with a lot more of them than I have but that's news to me.
Not a surprise, really. I've been misled before. Is it just manufacturing
costs that motivated them to do this?

Most if not all CRT based RPTV Mitsubishi's convert the RGB input to
component for internal processing. There is therefore no significant
benefit (and in fact a negative, the RGB->component conversion that
must take place) to feeding them RGB unless that is the only option.

I only really studied the schematics for this on the V17/V18 chassis,
but anyone with the service manuals could check it on the later
models. The fact, the color/tint (and their horrible "perfect
color") functions work with RGB input would seem to indicate the
practice continued.

Are you guys talking about a video converter, or a ground isolator? The
Klipsch link takes me to a ground isolator for $99!!!! Outrageous! I need to
quadruple, at least, the price I sell isolators for if these are really
selling.
