"The View" on ABC (locally, KTBS-TV-DT, Shreveport) will being
broadcasting in HD March 27th, according to the ladies who are
worried about having to wear new makeup.

Does anyone know if this is indicative of any change at ABC toward
HDing their "live" studio shows and news? I know NBCs news studios
are equipped for HD even though they are not being sent out to the
affiliates that way.

Best,
Robert

I hope they don't do what Good Morning America did - start with incredible
picture quality (the WOW factor) and then screw it up by softening the video
until it's smudgy, smeary and out-of-focus looking. Whoever's responsible
should be fired.

Hugh,

You're kidding. Would that really be the reason? It would
take Pixar!

This is a repeat, to some extent, of what happened back in the 1950's
when color Television was introduced on a large scale. I remember
going into NYC to see some TV shows (like "The Today Show" etc.) both
before and after color TV was commonplace. The old monochrome
cardboard sets had to be replaced with colorful ones because the old
sets looked really bad under the more critical eye of color cameras.

Now, with HD, instead of replacing cardboard sets we are going to
have to replace cardboard people! <g>

The hosts were complaining? Producer's idea? I have no idea. It's 'soft' to
the point of being 'blurry'. Very disappointing, since they started out with
a crisp, colorful and vibrant picture.

I remember reading a while back that a lot of hollywood/media types
don't like HD because it shows too much detail (age marks, acne, etc.).
I'm sure it presents all sorts of new challenges for makeup artists . .

That first day the hosts explained how they now have their makeup
'airbrushed' on. The show looked great.

As for actors, just tune in to 'The Tonight Show', 'Letterman', 'CSI-Miami',
etc. The picture is crystal-clear.

Are the GMA hosts as vain as Robert Stack, perhaps, who insisted on being
shot through a 'gauze' lens on 'Unsolved Mysteries' so his wrinkles wouldn't
be as apparent?

This post from the AVS Forum says it all: "Saw it this morning and it still
bad, I changed the channel. Why bother to put it in HD if this is the end
result."

Let me say something in GMA's defense. Could the softening that you
guys are reporting be intentional to reduce the difference between the
live HD shots and the field material, which is mostly SD? When they
started doing GMA in HD, they said that that would be the major challenge.

Of course, as more field material is in HD, the situation will change.

Could be. Don't really have a clue why they'd do anything so stupid, but it
only takes one 'idiot in charge'.

I complained to GMA via their website but haven't received a response.

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

It's been some time since I've seen this topic
brought up. Five+ years ago when I first began my
adventure with HDTV - soon after the initial "W O
W!" - one of my earliest reactions was in
observing the unexpected consequences of HDTV's
magnified detail. The familiar "close-up" that TV
directors seem almost fixated with, was suddenly
too much to bear. Seeing every pore, stubble and
blemish on a 53" screen, in all of HDTV's
magnificent detail was horrendous. It slowly
ocurred to me that "they" didn't know how terrible
people appeared in HDTV close-ups.
I haven't observed this in a long time - either
they've caught on and have taken precautions to
counter the effects; or perhaps it illustrates how
much of the "W O W" has been compressed and
filtered out of the HDTV Signal?

Let me say something in GMA's defense. Could the
softening that you
guys are reporting be intentional to reduce the
difference between the
live HD shots and the field material, which is
mostly SD? When they
started doing GMA in HD, they said that that would
be the major challenge.

Of course, as more field material is in HD, the
situation will change.

Check out 'CSI Miami'. The picture is incredible, and yes, you can see every
pore, pimple and goosebump, just as if the person was standing in front of
you. Isn't that what HDTV is all about?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Bill... Now wait a minute. CSI is a whole
different matter. You see much more than mere
facial features on CSI! No argument from me on
the excellence of CSI's use of HDTV. And as for
the general comments - don't misunderstand, I was
merely offering personal observations of my
reactions - 5-years ago; at a time when everything
viewed in HDTV took my breath away and brought an
involuntary repetition of "UNBELIEVABLE!" Yes ...
your right. This is what HDTV is all about.
But if I had to appear on-air (no sweat! will
never happen!) in HDTV, I certainly would want all
the help the make-up artists could provide!
There's a frequent comment made about HDTV - "It
almost looks "realer" than "Real!"... In reference
to the topic at hand, this is sometimes
"frightfully" true!
Your bringing up CSI prompts me to ask if anyone
has an explanation for why this (1) show stands
out so spectacularly, compared to most other
recorded HDTV programs? It seems there isn't
another HDTV program - excluding live, outside
sports events, ie: NFL Football! Masters Golf!
etc.- that comes even close to the quality of
CSI - or am I wrong?

I think at least some of it is the atmosphere they create with the
lighting. They use a lot of dark/night backgrounds and have focused
intense lighting on whoever is in the foreground of the shot. You're
right it does look better than Alias or Law & Order or most other shows
I see.

Hi Bob C.,

'CSI Miami' is the standout, and though it's highly 'stylized', no one can
argue the crystal clarity of the images (facial and otherwise). NFL football
close-ups such as on ESPN are the equivalent. Sorry, don't watch golf. I
also don't watch 'American Idol', but have seen enough bits and pieces of it
to know that it too has that 'WOW' factor, as have several awards shows I've
seen. There are quite a few good HD shows, and even the sit-coms have
improved (they used to be DARK). Fox seems to have an especially good handle
on HD quality. But, we're agreed, 'CSI Miami' is pretty much in a class by
itself among TV shows.

Unfortunately, 'GMA' has a soft, out-of-focus feeling all to itself, when it
could be/should be/has been picture perfect.

Bill... Now wait a minute. CSI is a whole
different matter. You see much more than mere
facial features on CSI! No argument from me on
the excellence of CSI's use of HDTV. And as for
the general comments - don't misunderstand, I was
merely offering personal observations of my
reactions - 5-years ago; at a time when everything
viewed in HDTV took my breath away and brought an
involuntary repetition of "UNBELIEVABLE!" Yes ...
your right. This is what HDTV is all about.
But if I had to appear on-air (no sweat! will
never happen!) in HDTV, I certainly would want all
the help the make-up artists could provide!
There's a frequent comment made about HDTV - "It
almost looks "realer" than "Real!"... In reference
to the topic at hand, this is sometimes
"frightfully" true!
Your bringing up CSI prompts me to ask if anyone
has an explanation for why this (1) show stands
out so spectacularly, compared to most other
recorded HDTV programs? It seems there isn't
another HDTV program - excluding live, outside
sports events, ie: NFL Football! Masters Golf!
etc.- that comes even close to the quality of
CSI - or am I wrong?

Check out 'CSI Miami'. The picture is incredible,
and yes, you can see every
pore, pimple and goosebump, just as if the person
was standing in front of
you. Isn't that what HDTV is all about?

Well, I have more than 20 channels of HD programming via my Dish
Network and there's LOTS of stuff on a daily basis that provides
"WOW" type viewing. Look at some of the stuff from Discovery HD,
Equator HD, RAVE HD, Gallery HD, HD News and any number of other
offerings and you will see that there is abundant programming that
should satisfy even the most critical viewer. And in about a month's
time Dish will be adding 10 more HD stations in the NY area
(including locals) so my choice will involve more than 30 stations or
about 1700 hours of HD programming weekly. It's come a long way from
just a few years ago, in my opinion. On a 1080p display this stuff is
stunning (even if it's only 1080i).

Personally, I think the best looking show on television is "The Young and
the Restless" in HD! The makeup and lighting is some of the best in
television both primetime and definitely in daytime! This show looks
awesome, even if you don't watch soaps you should see this show.

A window on reality... that was the idea...

Our social vanity is just incredible!

PLEASE! Bring on all the wrinkles, pimples, discoloration, pores,
stubble and any other form of what something REALLY looks like. On that
note I really dislike Philip Swan and his personal hang up with reality
on HDTV.

ARGH!
