This just makes me sooo mad: TNT

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I wish I could receive TNT so I could see for myself. I have heard of this
on several forums in the past. Once I'm finished working on a few new
website features, I'll revisit the program guide to add some of that kind
of thing. Perhaps even drop TNT altogether, or simply list it as SD
instead of HD.

Thoughts from the list?

Shane,

What makes me sooo mad....... is TNTHD listing ALL of it's programs as
HD - even though they are 480i upconverted and stretched. I don't like
what they are doing with the images (stretch) BUT - you can't tell the
REAL HD from the FAKE HD on your listings (or any one else's listings).

THAT you should be able to do something about.

The problem is that some content is real HD ("Into The West", "The
Closer", some movies) but they don't differentiate it in data sent to
program services. Their REAL HD stuff is OUTSTANDING (I've never seen
anything on that was better than "The Grid" show last summer). But to
call an upconverted, stretched "Law & Order" HD is false! It wouldn't
be so bad IF:
1) They clearly made clear the true HD stuff in the programming info.
2) They didn't stretch programs (and SD commercials too) to fill the
screen at all times.

I get TNT-HD on Dish. Some of the content IS HD, e.g. NBA basketball, most
recent original TNT programming, etc. A lot of the content is upconverted
and stretched. Frankly, TNT does as good a job of this (or better) than
anyone else, IMO. Much better, for example, than ESPN HD used to do when
they stretched SD. It would, of course, be nice if they would tell us (or
the guide providers) what is HD and what is upconverted, but in the absence
of that, Shane, let's leave TNT in the Guide for now - at least they have
actual HD content, and they're getting better all the time.

I have asked this question of our data provider again.

Ever since we began carrying the guide data back in September, we have been
asking them (Tribune) to include attributes in their database for "native"
format, resolution (both x AND y), aspect ratio, FPS, etc. My last email to
them was about 4 weeks ago to which they responded that they were
developing a new back-end to their system that would be able to capture all
of this information, but that it would not be completed until next year.
In the mean time, I think all we will be able to do is either mark it all
as HD (or SD) and I can manually flag content as it is discovered ... or to
simply place a disclaimer "somewhere" that TNT programming may or may not
be "native" HD.

Open to other thoughts/ideas, of course.
