----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----
Folks:
Four issues this time, only one critical and not related to HD, at least
directly.
1) Has anyone personally seen the new Sony 46" Qualia 005? Sony just sent
me some marketing brochures for this. Sony claims that this is "the
world's first RGB LED backlit LCD television". It does not accept 1080p
input and it has a Media Receiver Unit to which all input connections are
made. It also seems to have a fairly impressive built-in 100 watt digital
amplifier driving ten speakers all of which appear to be built into the
display. IF you have seen it what are your impressions especially as it
compares to the Qualia 004 and the new 60" and 50" SXRD units?
2) The new 60" and 50" SXRD units are visually stunning to me. I
personally think that they are better than the Qualia 004. At $5,000 and
$4,000 respectively I can't imagine a better bang for the buck. I did read
all the Tips from yesterday regarding "the early Christians get the
hungriest lions" but I think that Sony MAY have "perfected" the LCoS
process. We'll see. My brother just bought the 60" set and while he is no
videophile he speaks of it as if he has had an epiphany.
3) Has anyone had any personal experience with the new iSCAN VP30 from
DVDO? I believe that it is about $2.000 and at least on the surface
appears to be an answer to those of us early adopters whose HD sets can
only accept one HD signal. With the advent of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray or both
there has been some talk that the output from either of those units will be
1080p but only through HDMI output. This latest product from DVDO would
appear to solve those problems. I believe that Hugh had some personal
experience earlier with one of their previous scalers/switchers and wasn't
particularly impressed. Is that an accurate summary of your experience Hugh?
4) Now to the VERY critical issue. Do any of you folks have access to an
extra XBox 360 premium system, the $399 retail priced one? My oldest
grandson wants one for Christmas and so far at least I have struck
out. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I would lalso ike to express my appreciation to each of you who have
collectively enriched my HD experience for the past five years when I first
took the plunge into HD with my 65" Sony RP XBR. I have since purchased a
32" Sony LCD HDTV for the bedroom and I am also considering the new Sony
60" SXRD. Here's hoping that each of you had a great Thanksgiving and will
have a great holiday season.
Thanks,
Tom
