This may be old news to some of you, but apparently Toshiba's planned
HD-DVD player will only support HD output over HDMI. All other outputs are
downrezzed to 480.

Sounds like poor planning to me. That will reduce the number of people
buying their player since many HDTVs do not have HDMI. Is there a rational
explanation for this ............like HDCP.

It would seem like a new display capable of 1080p would have those
inputs.....so what's the big deal?

Well if you have a set without those inputs which displays 1080i their
player will not work. It would look much better in 1080i than it will at
480.

Those of us who adopted early anticipated this. Just look at the posts for
the last six months.
It sucks, but it is what it is. In the meantime though we have to wait for
yet another industry shake out between Blu-Ray and their competitor(s).
Personally I'm waiting until we have some definite standards established
that we are all aware of and some kind of indication as to which way the
wind is blowing on the competing formats. Of course I'm also waiting for a
display capable of taking a 1080P native signal. So the rest of you eager
beavers, pony up quick so we can get on to the second and third generations
of the afore mentioned displays and disc players!

You and me both. I saw a used Pro620HD go for $900 on ebay...amazed to
see people getting rid of that kind of quality for that low price,
especially if it's in good working condition. I'm hoping mine lasts
until the point where we at least have 1080p flat panel that accepts
1080p from an external source via hdmi, costing no more than $3000.

Jason, I totally agree except that I will go to 5k for a 70" set. My Pro520
looks so darn small when watching really excellent HD.

$900? That set is worth 2-3 times that if it is in great shape. They are
probably getting flat screen something with a picture that is not even close
to the Pioneer.

Are these older Pioneer sets really that much better than the new Plasma and
LCd's out in the market place. Picture wise?

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

It's all about black levels. CRT is the best way to display blacks, so
in a darkened room, I would put my 520 against just about any display on
the market. The 54" I have uses 7" guns instead of the 9" found in the
larger model, which would improve it further. However, if you look at my
set next to a 40" LCD in a bright room, the LCD wins every time.

So I would say that the trade off is flexibility for pure quality. My
set also cannot accept a 720p input and it's extremely difficult to get
it to sync to a computer input. It also has no DVI/HDCP/HDMI inputs.

If my set broke tomorrow and it was not covered under warranty, I would
not hesitate to buy another for < $1000, assuming it was in the same
condition as mine. Yes, it's a dinosaur; but it's the tyrannosaurus rex
of HDTVs.

Are these older Pioneer sets really that much better than the new Plasma
and
LCd's out in the market place. Picture wise?
