FYI, I don't know if this has been reported before today:

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Toshiba Corp. said on Thursday it may delay the year-end launch of
its next-generation HD DVD players, potentially undermining its advantage as the first supplier
to put such machines on the market.

If they do, they will lose much of the advantage they have over Blu-Ray.
The longer they delay, the smaller the premium becomes for the newer
Blu-Ray technology. If they lose the price advantage, all they have left
going for them is the name. Of course, these are logical arguments, and
have nothing to do with actual consumer decisions.

How ironic that Matsushita and Sony are in bed together given that the Beta
/ VHS battle was between these two companies. My prediction, if anything
is brought to market from either camp it won't be until after the second
quarter of 06, and probably more like the fourth quarter before there is any
real availability on players and software and that is probably optimistic.

I think this delay is tied to the fact that only 12 titles were going to be
available.

Or to the fact the the proposed product release doesn't support 1080p, which
is beginning to show up in quite a few new TV's by various manufacturers
this fall.
