All of the new HD format players (HD-DVD and Blu-ray) also will play
back SD DVDs (sometimes referred to as DVD-Video as another member
pointed out). There's nothing fancy or extra about that. What would
be nice to have sometime in the future would be a player that handles
both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs so that there would be fewer boxes on
our racks and fewer wires tying everything together. There have been
rumors of such devices but I'm not sure whether they will be with us
shortly. Maybe someone else knows. Supposedly more manufacturers
are jumping on the high definition disc bandwagon so maybe the
competition for features will heat up. CES might possibly provide
some preliminary answers to this - but maybe it's still a little too
early for that "battle."

Thanks, Carter.
Well, sounds like the way to go, both Blue-Ray and DVD-Video
on the same machine.
Wonder what it would cost to have DVD-HD also on the same machine?

Best,
Robert

I have used this machine . it does play various
forms of digital mesoa including dvd's ,blueray and
dvd -audio discs . I have found it to be good bluray
player and was less impressed with it's abilities as a
dvd
player.

I think CES 2007 will be too early, as at least 2 earlier-announced
combo-players were recently shelved. I have seen no further announcements
of one, except for an article about a new chip than can be incorporated to
make this easy, but it is expected to be unavailable until late '07. I
can't find that link, right now, though.

All of the tech is available, but finding someone to manufacture it is
the problem. All the "main stream" manufacturers are firmly wed to their
respective formats. If you do see a combo player announced, expect it
from one of the smaller, possibly Korean, companies. And expect it to be
at least as much as the combined price of each ... probably ~$2k US.

Just my guess.
