Two Problems

Hi folks,

1. In the last month or so I've had a problem getting
some of DirecTV's HD channels on my RCA tuner, namely
ESPN, UHD, TNT and HDNet Movies. I'll get a message
"Searching for satellite signal" and not connect at
all, but usually I'll get this message and several
seconds later the picture will appear for a bit, then
drop out again. The other three HD channels, ESPN2,
Discovery and HDNet are fine. The signal level on the
dish for Transponder 2 is about 80 and for Transponder
26 is about 85.

If I run a system test it says "Signal...Weak signal,
try dish pointing." Is this really a dish pointing
problem given the strong signal levels?

2. Occasionally, the image on my Mitsubishi CRT
rear-projection TV bows inward and the convergence is
way off. Sometimes it corrects itself and other times
I need to either change channels or turn off/on the TV
or the tuner. My guess is that it is the TV as
opposed to the tuner. If I'm correct, what would be
involved in correcting it? Would it be an inexpensive
fix? Or, God forbid, would it be more logical to use
the TV as a boat anchor and shell out big bucks for a
replacement?

Jim

You are lookinag at repair. Depending on your location figure $300-500.

Good Luck!

Jim,

1. Trim the trees (but remember it is not recommended to cut to top, just the sides), or move the
dish to a higher location, or get a bracket that lifts the dish about 3 feet without relocating the
installation, it sounds as one of the 3 LNBs is blocked. I bet the problem shows intermittent on
windy days when branches move in and out of the LNB path, and worst on rainy days when the wet
leaves become more of an obstacle than dry. DirecTV should do that job, maybe for free.

2. Regarding the Mitsu RPTV, as Richard said it seems that a service call might be needed, but,
before you call that technician and open that wallet, analyze the patterns of behavior, when it
happens, did it start to happen when you made any changes on your system?, for example Do you have
any large unshielded speakers or other source of heavy magnetism flanking the set? Unshielded old
sub? I have measured readings with my magnetometer even after two/three feet away from the coils of
small 8" woofers, and that varies depending on the size and type of woofers.

In a normal situation, because the CRT guns are in the center low part of the RPTV cabinet, you
should be OK, but there are all kinds of setups (an unshielded 15" sub right in front/center of the
TV cabinet a feet away from the guns) and also there are all kinds of massive speakers out there
that people use as L/R from old stereo setups, way before HT started, and shielding started, it does
not hurt to check. Does it happen with all the sources?

One thing that seems an interesting indicator is when you said that the TV behaves back to normal
when your turn on/off the tuner, NOT the TV. Try to feed DVD only on the same input. Try playing
DVD in another input and turn on/off the tuner in another input, does it disturb the DVD image?

If you want to research more before spending, and you cannot stand the AVS ruff edges (to say it
nicely) check the
Keohi.com http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/brandspe ... _tips.html
and home theater spot http://www.hometheaterspot.com/htsthrea ... oard/UBB10
forums,

they have Mitsu tips, ISF people, recalls info, do-it-yourself stuff, etc.

Paul Carleton use to be expert on Mitsus when he was at AVS forum when HDTV started, around the same
time I did, then he left off to his own forum, for about the same reasons I left as well.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

Jim,

According to Lingsat.com your bad channels are all on the 110-degrees
satellite and your good channels are on the 119-degrees satellite. Assuming your
core DirecTV channels on 101 are good, trees are not likely the problem since
the middle satellite is the problem. Most likely the one LNB is going bad,
but you might check its connections.

There is a chance your other problem is a loose connection inside or outside
the TV. If rocking the TV a little ever fixes the problem then a search
inside the set might be productive.

Not to diminish the fine points made by Rodolfo and Ken...

Jim, your problem is common, have done many, it is a repair and there is
nothing to research unless you want to try and fix it yourself. Not
recommended...

Jim,

Richard is correct. I had the same problem with my Mits. Luckily, I had a
5 year warranty and my problem came on just before it expired. The work to
be completed involves lot's of soldering and resoldering along with part
replacement. Go with a pro.
