----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

I am seeking a universal remote that has the following features:

Infrared AND radio
Not touch screen
Not $500
Backlit
Computer connectable to download and upload configuration

If I had to give up any of these, I'd give up the radio, but I'm tired
of having a separate remote for the Dish

Any suggestions? Universal remotes seem to be like religion, so I hate
to ask...so far I'm leaning towards the Harmony 860. I also don't want
to spend a year reading the forums!

Thanks!

Jason,

I think one of the best features with the Logitech Harmony is the fact that
answering a few questions about your components (on their web site) will
give you a downloadable program that completely sets up your remote.

I have the Home Theater MX700, and am very happy with
it.

Have had it for about 4 years. Its replaced all my
other remotes (TV, Cable, Sat, DVD, Laser Disk, AVR,
Tivo).

I bought the Harmony 880 for my wife and for her needs it is just fine but I
would never be happy with it due to a number of limitations. I use the
MX500 which is very consumer friendly as is the MX700 which I have but don't
use.

Rick,

Where did you find it for that price?

I thought that the MX-850 was $4-500 with Base station

Scroll down the page a bit to get to the MX-850. $299.95 for the remote
and $89.95 for the base station. It sounds like there maybe a few cheaper
places on line based on price grabber.

Jason,
My problem with it was the inability to control all aspects of my cable
remote for one thing. It may be possible but with the buttons on the remote
it appears to be difficult. I am sure you could program the existing
buttons. The buttons are very tiny for my larger than average fingers and
I was always pressing the wrong button. But for my wife it is wonderful as
it is totally self-explanatory if all you need to do is turn on all the
equip. and change channels/volume. Or turn on all the equip. to watch
movies via DVD and pause, etc. But to get into my receiver like I can with
my MX500 or MX700 it does not come close to being user friendly. It
impressed me as being designed for people who only want to press one button
and then only adjust the basic functions. And for that it is great.

Hugh

I'm not sure, but I'll bet there is no factory warranty with that price.
Call HTM and see if this is an authorized dealer.

Hugh -- We loved our MX-500 as well, but you should take some time with your
700. Easy to program with your PC -- wonderful macros -- huge database.
Give it a try (or send it to me - I'll pay postage!!)
