Alan,
No,
On my first line I mentioned that the FVD is not blue-laser (as HD DVD and Blu-ray discs require),
it will play the VC1 (WM9) red laser though. This is one main reason for the low cost, red laser.
but enough for HD with VC1.
I am putting all the specs comparing with other formats on the report.

Thanks Rodolfo.
Will this actually play the Toshiba HD-DVDs and Sony Blue Ray DVD's that
will be showing up in the US soon?

Alan,
Although not exactly universal and with all the features of blue-laser you
included in your
question, Taiwan's FVD is already out for $240, HD 1080i/p and 720p in
WM9-VC1, 1080i over component
analog (you read that right), targeting about 100 titles of movies for $6 a
piece.
It uses its own content protection, no DRM, no AACS, all legal.
You will see the coverage next week. I am planning to meet with them again
for a full article for
the magazine.
The complete coverage of the 4 Chinese formats (FVD above is Taiwan's, the
4th) could be seen in the
2004 report (pages 87-89), and 2005 report (pages 102-103), free to
everyone.
The other 3 Chinese formats:
Their plus: rock bottom price , red laser
Their problem: lack of appealing content, short disc storage if not using
MPEG-4 VC1 red laser, self
isolation from the west source of blockbuster content.

Rodolfo La Maestra

So, when will we see the first inevitable "Chinese branded HD-DVD / Blue Ray
HD, up converting SD DVD, CD, MP3, combo everything disk players, with
720P/1080P out of any connection players"? You know, the ones with no
regional codes that let you also skip over the FBI warnings.
I want to buy one ASAP.
Alan
