Does anyone have any experience with the several
DVD players that up-convert to HD that are now
on the market? Appreciate any info, pro or con.

Hi,

The best one for the money is definitely the Oppo Digital. I just calibrated
another system with one yesterday and remain quite impressed. It is about
$250. Go to www.oppodigital.com Hope this helps.

Kevin - have you tested the Toshiba HD-DVD player? It has this feature
as well.

But it's too slow to use for SD DVDs, plus it doesn't remeber the disc
loacation of SD DVDs when you remove it or if you don't hit the disc resume
button.
I only use mine for HD DVDs. It takes 40 seconds to boot into the Linux OS
then another 30 seconds to read the HD DVD and have the disc start playing.
That's too much to go through to watch an upconverted DVD. But worth it for
the HD DVds. I will definitely be watching fewer SD DVds after seeing how
good these HD DVDs look. Now if they can come out with more discs. I already
have 5 of the 6 available HD DVD discs with that sixth one on the way.

Hi Jason,

I spent a little time with the $499 Toshiba on Thursday at CNET, but we
didn't have a 1920 x 1080 display to test it with an up-conversion wasn't
something we looked at. I am sure I will have the opportunity at some point
though. I thought I had read here that someone thought the up-conversion on
the Toshiba was pretty bad.

While I am normally an instant adopter I am waiting on HDDVD and BlueRay,
because I don't see strong enough studio support at this time to buy in. I
have an awesome SD DVD player for my theater and an upgrade for SD doesn't
make sense. I will post here when I know more about this player.

Best,

Kevin Miller

I have... Not fully satisified. Still working that out though.

The Oppo is likely better. The Oppo is amazing at $200. It puts out
correct signals into HDMI or DVI and clean patterns.
