In the morning and then at mid-day I review all stories plucked from the
web. Shane has produced a ranking matrix that allows via pull downs me to
rank and categorize the stories. Many are redundant and so "purged" from our
site entirely. Others have modest or specialty interest and are ranked in
accordance to their significance and likely appeal. Those with rankings
below the top rank of are seldom seen on our news page. I aim to select the
original story material from major news services (AP, UPI, CNN, etc.) on
their sites or even material from the major press release services from
their sites rather than from the secondary blogs and "clogs" of the
internet. I do watch the blogs for they tend by accumulations to suggest
consumer direction. But they are seldom newsworthy as a stand alone. More
often than not they are authored by those with a short span in the industry
and so suffer from historical perspective. If you don't know from where
something has come it is far more speculative to say where it will go. I do
use an occasional blog from one of the better authors as they are starting
to do some primary research, a fact we do not want to pass by without
notice.
>From experience I have come to trust that a preponderance of the article
excerpts will lead to a fully expanded article. That trust has caused me to
not open up each and every story and blog. I have not found but a handful of
stories that have been removed from their site prematurely unless an
incorrect statement in their report had caused a physical
retraction/removal. I think we are doing a passable job consistent with the
resources available to us. With every increase in resources you can count on
their then being a better newsroom. _Dale
