Video Scalers

Could I get a recommendation on a middle of the road video scaler? Are there
certain features that I should make sure I get? Would it be wise for me to
wait until the prices of the units that include HDMI inputs come down in
price or would I do okay for a few years with one that includes Dvi inputs?
I know that DVDO sells a couple of units with HDMI that sell between 2K-4K.
However that is more than I can pay at the present time.

Does anyone have the Leeza KD-HD1080P? Would they recommend it? Thanks

Does it make sense to wait until one could afford a video scaler with HDMI
inputs. For example the DVDO VP30 compared to a DVDO Iscan HD or Iscan HD
plus?

James,

I recommend for you to take a hard look at what you want to do with the
scaler, and analyze why you think you need it, and review the system that
will be surrounding that scaler, from the source equipment, to the wiring,
to the display devices, before you start making choices.

I am saying that from the point of views of "equivalent investment",
"required features", and "overall objective".

You have not said how the system is integrated, but I believe you are
capable to evaluate by yourself the angles above, before you conclude you
need X or Z brand or A or B features, or even the need for one entirely.

There are features that could be mandatory for some systems and unnecessary
to others, like 1080p pass-thru, HDMI 1.3 inputs/outputs, 1080i non-bobbing
de-intelacing, 1080p 24fps handling, vertical stretch capability for
CinemaScope, etc etc.

I frankly discourage anyone spending $3000 on a scaler to be in front of a
TV that cost $1000 or connected with a $10 cable, as I discourage someone to
save on cheap scaler that will be in the path of a hi-end 1080p system.

All the cases in between require also a close look, a look that can not be
made by just responding to your email with a brand/model name.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

I am at a point where I cant spend the money for the best choice for my
system. I have a Sharp 45" LCD 1080P TV. The scaler I purchase will be used
for this TV until I get my Home Theater finished and stocked with a higher
end projector. The system is hooked up to a Direct TV HR10-250 with a Zenith
DVD player DVB316, Monster HTPS 7000 MKII PowerSource, Monster AVS 2000
Voltage stabilizer. The cabling is all middle of the road Monster.

Quite honestly I am not sure exactly what type of scaler I require. I am
just trying to get the best picture I can with my current Video set up and
economic restraints. I also will wait and try to get a quality used unit
instead of a brand new cheaper model.

My SD picture is poor however I usually try to only watch HD programming. In
fact if a movie is not in High Def I probably wont watch it. Direct TV is
supposed to add about 150 new HD channels this summer so my objective will
be to have the best HD picture I can possibly get without having to take out
a second mortgage. Thanks

To add a few points

About the only thing I do with scaling is SD video from broadcast. For
everything else I don't need a scaler.

The Lumagen series is popular amongst ISF more for what can be done to
balance out a system or correct display flaws rather than purely scaling
performance.

All of that relates to native 720P or 1080P displays. Odd ball pixel
depths are another story and scaling everything can have advantages and
is often times recommended for ISF performance.

Replace your Zenith with an Oppo 981 and you are set for SD DVD

If you can get your SD coming in at 480P or better that will minimize
your artifacts with most displays.

An external scaler could enhance the SD but from my perspective you only
rob Paul to pay Peter, choose your SD broadcast poison.

Richard,

I thought that this Zenith had an excellent reputation for upconverting
signals? Is the OPPO that much better? Thanks

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

If you are going to install a front projection soon then I would not buy the
scaler until then, it might happen that the projector you buy comes paired
with its own scaler (Optoma is one), or it might happen that the scaler
looks good now on a 45" set but it is of insufficient quality for a 100"
screen, not to mention larger.

There are many artifacts in MPEG-2 that a scaler would not be able to
improve, if you have macroblocking because DirecTV butchers that channel, a
scaler would not be able to do as much as it could do with better
deinterlacing a 480i output of the DVD player for example.

That is what I meant with "take a hard look" of what you want to improve,
and the situation is a bit more complicated with your next step of moving to
a projector environment.

Look at some pictures of the image corrections one could expect from some
chips and models on the 2006 report, HD signal processors section.

The DVDO manufacturer has a feature that could be attractive in your
situation (with a projector future), a unit replacement program (that I
believe they still have) for returning a discontinued unit for a better or
upgraded unit, by which they give you a credit of about half of the price of
the returning unit applicable to your next purchase.

I do not believe anyone else offers that.

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Thanks

Wow, When I purchased this unit, it was the "now" unit to purchase for
quality and cost. Thanks for the info.

That was the main reason I made that one my first review.

As noted, it is not bad and depending on the application viable.

None of that changes the fact it has the wrong video setup. It does not
do imaging science.

At the time I had hoped to review other players, gray market, allowing
upconversion to analog video connections so you would have an
alternative. Ran out of time and money...
