Video switching/Samsung LCD HD

With the arrival of an XBox 360 at my house for Christmas, the severe high
definition input limitation of my older Sony KP65XBR10W once again rears
its ugly head. I am limited to only one input of high definition component
video. The other component input connections at the rear of the set will
not allow high definition input. Unfortunately, based on my very limited
research, my Denon 3803 does not have the bandwidth to switch HD
video. So, the options are 1) replace the XBR HD set (not really an option
if there is any hope, albeit slight, of the new Porsche next May), 2) HD
component video switcher, perhaps Extron, 3) the iScan VP30 video
scaler/switcher, 4) hook up the XBox to the other smaller 32" HD set (not a
realistic option because it's in the bedroom) or 4) get rid of the XBox 360
which isn't really an option either because of the grandsons. I really
don't play the games very much except when practicing the racing games in
preparation for offering some reasonable competition for my fourteen year
old grandson.. My XBox 360 is there because it allows my grandsons the
luxury of not having to bringing their unit to my house every time they
come over.

I know that I have whined about this before but I am still irritated at
Sony for their shortsightedness and MAY eliminate them from consideration
when I eventually replace the 65" XBR, which is still performing
flawlessly, with a larger size. I must admit though that I am very
impressed with their new 50" and 60" SXRD sets. IF they only had an 80"
version. The iScan scaler/switcher may be a realistic option if the early
purchasers on the Tips list, who indicated that they were about to receive
their units, provide excellent feedback. Have any of you guys had the time
to evaluate its abilities since your recent installations? I really don't
want to spend $2K for a scaler/switcher but it may be the least cost
alternative especially in view of the forthcoming (when, I don't know) of
Blu-Ray or HD-DVD if I do not replace my 65" XBR in the near future.

On another front, while shopping for a 32" HDTV for my grandsons for
Christmas I had originally started out looking at the Olevia, then went to
Westinghouse (produced by someone who I assume bought the name), then to
Sharp Aquos and then believe it or not to the Samsung LNR328W 32" LCD HD
monitor. The Samsung looked better it every respect than any of the others
which surprised me a lot. The Sharp Aquos is what I initially liked the
best until I saw the same HD video on the Samsung. Yes, I know that it
could be a matter of the way they were set up but I fiddled with the setup
on the Aquos for a good while trying to get it close to the Samsung before
giving up. Best Buy also uses the Samsung 23" (?) LCD in all their stores
to run the XBox 360 demo games on. I bought the 32" version for my
grandsons and we installed it on Christmas day and it is outstanding
especially when I consider the price. I just don't think that I could have
bought a better looking set for anywhere near the same amount of money. I
think that Samsung has come a long way since the early days when they were
the sponsors of college football in HDTV on Saturdays in that ill-fated
joint marketing campaign with Sears. Sears was and is such a
joke. Samsung has aggressively marketed their HD technology and HD
expertise and I for one was surprised with the quality.

Comments and feedback about the switching dilemma and the performance of
the iScan VP30 would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year!

Thanks,
Tom

Check out the bandwidth on the Denon again. I "think" (meaning I am not
certain) that you do have the required 100 mHz in that unit. In any case,
try out what you have -- my Denon 3300 had only 50 mHz bandwidth, but I
couldn't see any difference when it was in the circuit.

I have a 3803 as well, and my TV (Mits 55805) dates back to '99, so no
second HD input either. I bought the AudioAuthority 1154A switcher for my
STB (SIR-TS360) and XBox (and now XBox 360) and have been extremely
pleased. I have not compared it with anything else, however ... so I have
little basis of comparison except for the fact that I notice no detriment
in PQ with the switcher in-line. Here are the relevant links:

Problem is, there's only 2 component inputs on the 3803, and if you already
have an STB and DVD player hooked up, you're still SOL. The new 3804 and
3805 are both 3x100.

Thomas,

If a new scalar/switcher is $2K and you really only want switching, one
other possibility might be to replace the Denon with the 3805. I have this
unit; there are 3 component inputs all passing enough bandwidth for HD.
MSRP is $1,199 and you should be able to find it for less. I replaced a
3803, and was able to put it in my system without changing my Pronto (I
later updated my Pronto to add the new features, but enough codes were the
same that I could do the initial swap seamlessly). I know you didn't say
you were in the market for a new receiver, but it may actually be less, and
you'll end up with an extra 3803 for another room ;).

P.S. Which Porsche?

This is an easy one: spend $150 on the Inday RGB-4X switcher. It has a
remote that you can use to switch, it can be macro'ed into your existing
universal remote, and it even has digital coax audio switching. It's a
simple, inexpensive solution, highly recommended.

One final option you might want to consider for an inexpensive
component switcher is the Zektor HDS4.1. It is a 4 input 1 output
component switch. It also transcodes between toslink and coax digital
audio inputs. It is also remote controllable so you can easily add
input switching to your macros.

I bought mine from from Digial Connections and have been quite happy with it.

My vote is for the INDAY also. I used one for several years and it was
flawless.

One final option you might want to consider for an inexpensive
component switcher is the Zektor HDS4.1. It is a 4 input 1 output
component switch. It also transcodes between toslink and coax digital
audio inputs. It is also remote controllable so you can easily add
input switching to your macros.

I bought mine from from Digial Connections and have been quite happy with
it.

I have been recommending against the Audio Authority 1154 switcher because
of reported ground-loop-like problems and also difficulty getting the sensing
features configured properly.

But now Audio Authority is selling the 1154A, and I don’t know if the
reported problems are common to both units or just the 1154.

If anybody has experienced problems with the 1154A I would appreciate if you
would send me a short note describing them. –Ken

Hope that helps,

The Devon 3803 should be able to switch HD. It goes to 100mhz which should
be enough. Earlier denon models that did only 50mhz which wasn't really
enough. There are only 2 component inputs so this only gains you 1 extra
input.
