While it might not have all the bells and whistles of a "TiVo" it must have
struck a couple of nerves over there since TiVo has initiated a lawsuit with
Dish regarding the 622 technology. I'm not concerned about this one bit
because by the time something is resolved I'll be well onto the next
generation of DVR boxes or whatever. But the fact that there is a lawsuit
shows that TiVo must be threatened by the 622.

Jordan Meschkow says:

I have to leave for work, and do not receive these emails there, but the
lawsuit was for patent infringment, Tivo won and Echostar was enjoined from
selling any more, and now Echostar is appealing that while the
judgment/injunction is stayed.

Interesting. I see that DISH still is offering the 622 on their web
site as a $199 "lease upgrade" so maybe they're getting around this
by claiming not to "sell" 622s but to be leasing them? In any event
places like dishstore.net are still selling ViP 622s outright for
$499 so I'm not sure what's going on.

It appears that it's still possible to get a 622 if one wishes to at
this point.

The Tivo lawsuit affects all Dish DVRs (not just the 622) except a few very
early models. So it affects probably 99% of Dish DVRs. Dish has already
stated they will try to make a few changes to their DVRs (if they lose their
appeal) to get around the patent infringement case. I do not know what
changes would be necessary to get around the Tivo patents but I assume it
will make them less desirable.

I don't get the lawsuit at all. My 622 doesn't resemble TIVO in any way that
I can think of, other than that it is capable of recording programs.
