What's in a Name?

"Blu-Ray DVD" is BETTER; it's distinctively
different.
With all of the confusion swirling around "HD"
through mis/dis-information, which has the public
convinced that "HD" and "Digital" are synonymous,
"Blu-Ray" stands out as something "new".
And the term is "catchy" as well as descriptive.
It's different from the "old" standard DVD, and
the name immediately signifies that difference ...
Blue Laser instead of Infra-Red Laser.
"HD" was considered - and rejected - by the
Microsoft team as the name for their new
"X-Box"(360), because it might be mistaken as a
reference to "Hard Drive".
And remember the recent comments about the
"Windex" commercial that states their product
transforms your windows into "High Definition"
windows?!

Several years ago, totally frustrated by the
"Digital TV - HDTV" confusion, it seemed to me
that one solution would be to discard the
reference to "TV" entirely. Afterall, "HD" is so
completely beyond the original concept of "TV" and
"tele"- "vision" that it deserves a unique name
that distinguishes it from all other forms of
"TV".
As an alternative I came up with "HDV" for "High
Definition Vision." - I'm certain someone could
come up with an even more creative name! - But
lacking a "soap-box" high enough, and with zero
influence in the Industry, (which is probably just
as well!) my "idea" withered on the vine.
However, I continue to believe HDTV would be
better served by having its' own unique name; and
at least some degree of the confusion would be
avoided.

So my vote is for "Blu-Ray" - Vive La Difference!

Jason,

They changed their name from AOD to HD DVD a few
years ago. To do that change they requested
approval from the DVD Forum, and they got it
because the product uses some of the DVD

I would love to know how the naming even came to
be. I mean, there isn't
even a commonly used word for 'next generation
DVD' besides HD DVD. So
how was Toshiba or whomever able to
trademark/reserve/copyright what is
essentially a common noun? What if someone had
trademarked High
Definition and been the only ones allowed to use
that name? if I were
sony, I would start calling blu-ray "HD DVD"!

Interesting how this email with Tips behave, I received the copy (below) that Bob sent me directly
at 8 am, but no tips email was received yet after over 4 hours, the same happened with the email
requesting an update for 50" plasmas from Alan Crawley a few days ago.

In both cases I responded due to the direct email, otherwise I would not have known, and it might

I would say your ISP is queueing mail. Delaying delivery for some reason,
either inadvertent (server(s) down) or intentional (scanning for spam).

Rodolfo, it really stinks that you, of all people, is having this
trouble. I'm glad to see you haven't jumped ship because of the
problems! I would suggest that you sign up with a second email address
through a different ISP and monitor both for a couple of days. You are
the only regular who is on Verizon (that I have noticed), so maybe it's
an ISP issue. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Rodolfo, is it possible that this has something to
do with your "return" email address combining both
your personal return and the Tips return? I only
ask because in replying to your TIPS Post, it
shows: HDTV Magazine; (followed by your personal
address).
Just a dumb thought ... :)

essentially a common noun? What if someone had
trademarked High
Definition and been the only ones allowed to use
that name? if I were
sony, I would start calling blu-ray "HD DVD"!

----- HDTV Magazine Tips List -----

Bob,

That is probably because messages are returned as "replaying all" and were originated as with copy
to me, and some of the members of the list send me a direct copy within the "to", I reply to both.

I just was with Verizon at the phone (for one hour), they have an outage and some emails are not
sent/delivered, they are working on it now.

In the case of your email Bob, I responded to you (in addition to the tips) and it was sent back to
me with instructions to enter your address on a WhiteList they have created to deal with overseas
servers, is your server out of the US?

Additionally, it seems that the White list link provided on the email is something Verizon does not
recognize and Security is investigating my email.

The following text is exactly what is on the email from Verizon, PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK
just in case, the fool in Verizon (of a call I initiated) asked me to go to the link and provide the
email addresses of the people I want messages to be sent/received, I ended up asking for a
supervisor, then a supervisor told me that link address was not correct (too late for me), Verizon
created a Whitelist but they provide the information only when you call for problems, nothing on
their web site.

Since I can not see the Tips list I would appreciate direct emails if related to me, thanks.

I apologize for bringing this matter to the Tips but I thought I could help someone else with my

Rodolfo, is it possible that this has something to
do with your "return" email address combining both
your personal return and the Tips return? I only
ask because in replying to your TIPS Post, it
shows: HDTV Magazine; (followed by your personal
address).
Just a dumb thought ... :)

Jason,

I got the personal copy of the one you just sent
to the Tips, but not the Tips copy. I do not know
of any Tips emails since my answer to you
yesterday.

Thanks, and thanks for the nice thoughts.

Rodolfo, it really stinks that you, of all people,
is having this
trouble. I'm glad to see you haven't jumped ship
because of the
problems! I would suggest that you sign up with a
second email address
through a different ISP and monitor both for a
couple of days. You are
the only regular who is on Verizon (that I have
noticed), so maybe it's
an ISP issue. Let me know if I can help in any
way.

Interesting how this email with Tips behave, I
received the copy (below)
that Bob sent me directly
at 8 am, but no tips email was received yet after
over 4 hours, the same
happened with the email
requesting an update for 50" plasmas from Alan
Crawley a few days ago.

In both cases I responded due to the direct email,
otherwise I would not
have known, and it might
have looked as I was ignoring the person. Both
emails (the copy sent to
me and the one redirected
by the List) should have the same text and content
to my ISP, one
difference is that the one I do
not receive is the List email as sender, rather
than a person, and I
have no filters of any kind.

Any comments Shane?

Best Regards,

Rodolfo La Maestra

"Blu-Ray DVD" is BETTER; it's distinctively
different.
With all of the confusion swirling around "HD"
through mis/dis-information, which has the public
convinced that "HD" and "Digital" are synonymous,
"Blu-Ray" stands out as something "new".
And the term is "catchy" as well as descriptive.
It's different from the "old" standard DVD, and
the name immediately signifies that difference ...
Blue Laser instead of Infra-Red Laser.
"HD" was considered - and rejected - by the
Microsoft team as the name for their new
"X-Box"(360), because it might be mistaken as a
reference to "Hard Drive".
And remember the recent comments about the
"Windex" commercial that states their product
transforms your windows into "High Definition"
windows?!

Several years ago, totally frustrated by the
"Digital TV - HDTV" confusion, it seemed to me
that one solution would be to discard the
reference to "TV" entirely. Afterall, "HD" is so
completely beyond the original concept of "TV" and
"tele"- "vision" that it deserves a unique name
that distinguishes it from all other forms of
"TV".
As an alternative I came up with "HDV" for "High
Definition Vision." - I'm certain someone could
come up with an even more creative name! - But
lacking a "soap-box" high enough, and with zero
influence in the Industry, (which is probably just
as well!) my "idea" withered on the vine.
However, I continue to believe HDTV would be
better served by having its' own unique name; and
at least some degree of the confusion would be
avoided.

So my vote is for "Blu-Ray" - Vive La Difference!

Jason,

They changed their name from AOD to HD DVD a few
years ago. To do that change they requested
approval from the DVD Forum, and they got it
because the product uses some of the DVD

I would love to know how the naming even came to
be. I mean, there isn't
even a commonly used word for 'next generation
DVD' besides HD DVD. So
how was Toshiba or whomever able to
trademark/reserve/copyright what is
essentially a common noun? What if someone had
trademarked High
Definition and been the only ones allowed to use
that name? if I were
