Has anyone used the products sold by X10 Home Automation? Are they a
legitimate and quality company or should I look at another vendor in this
field? If so any suggestions. I am about ready to have the electrical wire
and boxes installed in my new home.
From previous recommendations I am having

2 Cable,
2 cat 5,
1- Low voltage, does it matter what type of wire this is?

I am still undecided if I will stay with satellite or go with TW. If I stay
With Satellite any suggestions on how best to install the dish? I spent a
lot of money on this roof and don't want some hack getting up on it and just
screwing in 4 screw and be done with it?

Lastly is RJ11 the wire I should use in the underground trench from the
street to the home?

Thanks in advance

JH

James,

RJ11 is a modular telephone connection. If you are talking about CATV, it's
RG-6 that you are thinking about. I have a recommendation for you. Instead
of the wire, place a 1" Schedule 40 plastic conduit. This will allow for
cable replacement in the future without digging a new trench. If the
conduit makes any turns at all, do not use plumbers ells, use gradual
sweeps.

I'm not sure what State you are in, but in California, where I design dry
utility (electric, gas, telephone, TV) trenches for a living, the utility
will place the wire itself in the conduits provided in the trench. The
utility will provide you with the configuration of the conduits in that
trench as well. There are required separations from each utility, and have
a required 18" compacted ground cover. In California, the service trench
itself will be 18" wide and 39" deep.

You really should confer with your utilities themselves about what is
required and what they will provide.

Cable is also RG-56, this is the most common. Stick to RG-6 though.

I wouldn't go with x10. I have a bunch of them and have thrown every one of
them out. It is inherently insecure. I have a few of neighbors that went
that way also, and I could pick up their camera's signals with my x10
reciever. When I showed them what I could see, they were shocked. They
have since pulled everything down and have started to go with IP cameras
instead. The equipment we had did not have the ability of dialing down the
signal or securing it. I was able to "see" into my neighbors' homes next
door, across the street, and 3 doors down.

I forgot to mention that my one neighbor had a bunch of home automation
stuff setup with his x10 stuff. I spent a couple of days screwing with him
since I was able to turn lights off/on and other things with my remote. It
only took about 20 minutes for me to figure out his settings. His wife
thought they had a poltergiest before I showed him what was up.

I've used X-10 switch and light modules for almost 20 years (in 3
different homes). The technology is a little touchy - but not overly
so. It is an effective, low cost solution for automating an EXISTING
home. But you are building a new home and have the opportunity to
install wiring for the future. I'd suggest wiring every room with both
cat 5 and with RG6 and each RG6 run to a central termination point.

X-10 compatable products are sold by many different companies including
Radio Shack and Leviton. X-10.com appears to sell some additional stuff
(that areof questionable quality.

You might want to check out Smatrhome.com
