 | Sharp combines its latest LCD improvements in LX series HDTVs (Engadget, 9/30/2009 9:12pm) |
Coming straight out of a brand new 10G production facility in Sakai, Sharp's line of LX HDTVs (in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch sizes) are all sporting the latest in LCD technology with UV²A panels and LED backlighting. Unfortunately, like Sony, these new screens abandon the higher quality RGB LED technology of the pricey XS1 series for cheaper white LEDs. Still, with a price of around $5,000 for a 52-inch compared to the $12,000 sticker shock of the XS1, it's easy to see why the switch was made. Other improvements include a light sensor for auto-calibration, a six speaker (5 speakers on the 40-inch) integrated 2.1 channel sound system with "Duo Bass" subwoofer and the usual assortment of VOD and AQUOS network support in store for Japanese buyers this November. While already available on a few U.S. models expect the new tech to spread across Sharp's U.S. lineup shortly, not to mention Sony and anyone other parties interested in a piece of the company's suddenly expanded manufacturing muscle.

 | Asus has a USB-powered Blu-Ray player on the way (DVICE, 9/18/2009 7:21am) |
| This hot little number is an external Blu-Ray player for computers that Asus hopes to have on shelves later this month. What surprised us the most is the fact that the one and only connector you'll see along the sides of the unit is one for a USB attachment — no HDMI, no AC jack to plug this thing into the wall. It does everything via USB.
Hopefully Asus will give it a cooler name than "SBC-04D1S-U" by the time it launches. According to the company it can write DVD-Rs and CD-Rs in addition to reading Blu-Ray. It also has a "Turbo Engine for enhanced USB Connectivity" — which is vaguely responsible for cranking HD goodness to your screen — and comes with a vertical stand and Cyberlink software.
Pricing information isn't available just yet, but we'll let you know when we do.
Still sounds pretty sweet — and it looks good, too. Hook it up to this (Read Full Article) |

 | In the CR Test Labs: New LCD, plasma HDTVs (Consumer Reports, 8/04/2009 2:55pm) |
| The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. | Mitsubishi unveils REAL line of Blu-ray burning, super upconverting LCDs (Engadget, 8/20/2009 3:52pm) |
Providing some competition for Sharp's DX series, Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off of its REAL Series LCD HDTVs, including a set with built-in hard drives and Blu-ray recorders, plus a few more that lack the recording, but throw in super resolution upconversion that claims to make even the worst SD look better than ever. Even if that's just hype, we hope it fares better than the company's ill-fated 120Hz processing. The 37- (1080p) and 32-inch (720p) BHR300 models feature their disc drives in the stand, rather than back-mounted approach of the AQUOS, plus 320GB HDDs, SDHC slot, plus i.LINK and USB connectors that let owners edit video from a camcorder on the TV before saving to disc or hard drive. The MZW300 models are all 1080p, in 40-, 42- and 52-inch sizes, with Diamond Engine Pro IV HD super resolution tech, the latest and most power efficient Diamond panel with 20,000:1 contrast ratio, built in 5.1 Dolby Digital decoder, virtual surround speakers and a talking program guide feature. These hit shelves in Japan in late October ranging in price from ¥350,000 ($3,705) for the LCD-52MZW300 to ¥200,000 ($2,117) for the LCD-32BHR300.Filed under: Displays, HDTV, Home EntertainmentMitsubishi unveils REAL line of Blu-ray burning, super upconverting LCDs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 10:52:00 EST. | LG teases us with 15-inch OLED HDTV (DVICE, 8/31/2009 4:59pm) |
Watching the development of super-thin OLED video displays is a lot like watching a baby grow up. The early pictures show a little, cute, and sometimes clever toddler, showing great promise. Soon the kid starts getting more sophisticated, like this 15-inch OLED HDTV from LG that goes on sale in Korea this November, and the rest of the world next year.
Of course, we're assuming you'll pay a pretty penny for this attractive, ultra-sharp bauble, probably in the neighborhood of Sony's $2500 11-inch XEL-1 OLED display that rolled out a couple of years ago. So LG is next. And then there were two.
Bigger OLED screens can't be that far off, but wait, now we find out LG's 30-inch OLED display has been delayed until 2012, and Sony is putting off its next OLED screen, too. What's the holdup? Entirely new manufacturing techniques must be developed. One day soon, though, these fantastic displays will be cheap.

 | Microsoft LifeCam Cinema 720p, first HD webcam to crank out 30fps (DVICE, 8/18/2009 5:04pm) |
| Now that Internet service providers are showing signs of opening up more upload bandwidth, maybe now webcams will finally find their way into mainstream acceptance. Microsoft will be doing its part when on September 9th it rolls out this gorgeous LifeCam Cinema 720p, the first consumer webcam to support 720p video at 30 frames per second.
Microsoft gives you a lot for your $80, including an autofocusing glass lens, noise-canceling mic and sturdy aluminum construction. Now all we need to do is get Skype to catch up to this high standard and start allowing 720p/30 webcams on its network.
For now, Microsoft says this LifeCam Cinema is compatible with Windows Live Messenger (as well as Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Live Photo Gallery), so maybe we can get used to that instead of Skype for now. That said, the days of commonplace 720p/30 webcam conversations are coming, and the future is looking sharp. Take another couple of peeks at this glamorous cam: (Read Full Article) |
 | Create disc with all Windows Updates - Save YouTube HD videos (AfterDawn, 9/13/2009 10:27pm) |
We've been working on updating some of our stone-age guides (yes, we get the complaints ;-) ) and adding a few new ones as well, for anyone who is interested. Decided just to mention a couple here that were written as a result of recommendation. The first one uses a freeware utility to download Windows Updates for any Windows OS after 2000 (not 7 just yet), make an ISO and burn to disc.
The disc (or alternatively USB) will provide an automated install then on a Windows machine. It's a very useful program if computer repairs are part of your business. It also can download all updates for Microsoft Office 2000, XP, 2003 or 2007 and automate the installation.

The second is just an update to a simple guide for saving YouTube videos to your hard drive. I had been asked about saving YouTube HD videos and remembered a simple JavaScript bookmark I had set just to do that, so I added it as a second page to the guide. I looked for the original source but found it has been scattered pretty far across the Internet, so I couldn't find it anymore (so kudos, whoever you are).

 | Sony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year (Engadget, 8/17/2009 11:04pm) |
Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. With LG also on a timetable that puts us a year or more away from seeing one of these on store shelves in decent sizes, things are up to Samsung to bring it home -- we're waiting.Filed under: HDTVSony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 18:04:00 EST. | Best Buy bringing value priced all-in-one 32-inch LCD & Blu-ray HDTV to stores "soon" (Engadget, 9/23/2009 11:09pm) |
It's not that surprising to learn Best Buy will be among those delivering a 1080p LCD with Blu-ray disc player packed in under its Insignia store brand, as we've been expecting rebadged units from overseas to hit the value market for some time. Marked "coming soon" at $599, it's easily a few hundred less than a comparable model from Sharp, but buyers will have to live without some of the newer line items like 120Hz motion processing and a contrast ratio higher than 20,000:1. Though we don't expect a lot in terms of load times, audio support or other features (no specs on the Blu-ray player noted) we're sure a bedroom or dorm room somewhere will find a spot for the NS-LBD32X. Your move, Wal-mart. | Does the Samsung Instinct HD really shoot HD video? (Consumer Reports, 10/08/2009 7:02pm) |
| The Samsung Instinct HD. [PHOTO courtesy of Samsung] The Samsung Instinct HD, available from Sprint for $250 with a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, is the first cell phone we've seen that claims to make high-definition video recordings. It also boasts a 5-megapixel still camera with flash. That camera is a step up from the flashless, 2-megapixel camera found on previous Instincts, also from Sprint, including the S30 version now in our Ratings, available to subscribers. We’re evaluating the Instinct HD now, and will post full test results on it to our Ratings later this month. Meantime, our initial results on its imaging are promising, albeit with a few quibbles. The new Instinct’s camera is easy to access, thanks to a dedicated camera button, conveniently located on the lower right side of the phone. Pushing the button activates the camera’s still mode. Tapping a camera icon on the upper left of the largish (1.78 x 2.66 in.) display switches the camera to video mode. Tapping again summons controls for auto-focus, exposure, and other camera functions. The Instinct HD claims it can record video resolution of 1280 x 720p, which is a true HD format—although, as we often point out, HD format alone does not assure images of pristine, high-definition quality. To assess quality, we shot a series of videos on the Instinct and hooked it up to a 50-inch Panasonic plasma television using the optional ($30) HDMI cable. Our findings: Color was good in the MPEG4 videos, though they lacked fine detail and texture. They blurred even more when we panned the camera to the left or right. In short, they couldn’t rival the image quality you’d enjoy from full-sized HD camcorders in our Ratings, available to subscribers. But such camcorders are much bigger and pricier than the Instinct HD, and do nothing except shoot video and stills. The high-def video quality of the Instinct was comparable to what you’d get from a standard-definition pocket camcorder, such as the Flip. And that's still way ahead of the video we've seen any other camera phone. A few details and quibbles: The HDMI cable has a proprietary connector that works only with the Samsung HD, so you may have trouble finding a replacement if it's lost while you're on vacation. You can't use the cable for showing stills on your TV. If your TV has an SD memory-card slot, you can play photos and videos off of the phone's 4GB microSD memory card (the phone comes with an SD memory card adaptor). Unfortunately, accessing the card is a pain. You have to open the phone's back cover and remove the battery, which shuts off the phone. And the still-image performance of the Instinct? Pictures were sharp and well-defined, with good color overall on the TV screen, though shots taken in low light still looked dark—even with the flash. Camera controls were fairly responsive for a phone, with an acceptable next-shot delay. Our photo engineers are currently giving the Instinct HD's... (Read Full Article) |
