 | Blu-ray reportedly trailing CBHD in China, the second theater of the format war begins (Engadget, 7/25/2009 11:03pm) |
Just because Toshiba has given up on HD DVD and moved on, doesn't mean the format war is totally over for red. According to a report by a Japanese TV station, its successor, China Blue HD is actually leading Blu-ray in marketshare in that country. Of course, based on the article found by our friends at FormatWarCentral, all we have to go on is a machine translated description of a video in a language we don't speak describing the apparent initial success of the government backed format in a socialist republic. If you need more evidence than that to declare the format war officially restarted, you're probably a communist, but before we drag you in front of the Un-American activities committee check out the video for a peek at the slick new CBHD cases that The Onion will surely be shipping its videos in very soon.

 | Mitsubishi Announces Super-Charged Blu-ray Disc Recorders....For Japan (About.com, 8/22/2009 10:00am) |
| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. For details, check out the brief report from Akihabara News as well as the Official Announcement and Product Specifications from Mitsubishi (in Japanese with some technical terms in English).
To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? For some perspective, read my article: The Case of the Disappearing DVD Recorder.

 | Sony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year (Engadget, 8/17/2009 11:04pm) |
Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. With LG also on a timetable that puts us a year or more away from seeing one of these on store shelves in decent sizes, things are up to Samsung to bring it home -- we're waiting.Filed under: HDTVSony's big plans for OLED HDTVs may slip to next year originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 18:04:00 EST. | Philips shows off 3D 21:9 HDTV (AfterDawn, 9/08/2009 2:55am) |
Philips has announced during the recent IFA event that they will be the latest company to go 3D, adding the third dimension to their Philips Cinema 21:9 HDTV.
"The technology is ready, but the content is not there yet," said Philips Consumer Lifestyle CEO Andrea Ragnetti. "It has to be based on what consumers really want and currently it is not clear if consumers actually want to wear glasses to watch TV or want it without."
A different spokesperson did add that "3D TV is the ultimate dream for consumers", and Philips decision follows that of Sony and Panasonic.
One glaring difference however, is that Philips is said to be favoring strereoscopic glasses, instead of active shutter glasses like its rival brands.
The TV is still in prototype but will be available when the content is there.Permalink | Comments
