In an anncouncement that created some brief excitement at CEDIA, JVC introduced the first Blu-ray Disc recorders available in the U.S. market at a press conference early Thursday morning. However, the excitement was very short-lived when the actual details were revealed.
The new JVC Blu-ray disc recorders cannot, I repeat, cannot record high definition television programming, either from over-the-air (there is no built-in tuner or RF input), cable, or satellite; there are no HDMI or Component video inputs for recording hi-def video, only standard definition composite and S-Video.
However, each recorder comes equipped with a either a 250GB or 500GB hard drive and can record either standard or hi-def content from SD Cards and digital camcorders via USB or Firewire interface. The target market for these recorders is not the mainstream consumer, but video editors and related professionals.
The SR-HD1250 is priced at $1,995 and the SR-HD1500 is priced at $2,550. Both units will be sold through JVC's professional division. For more details, check out the Official Announcement from JVC. The Pioneer BDP-320 is a Blu-ray Disc player that combines practical features with good performance. Blu-ray discs are played at full 1080p via its HDMI output. This player is also compatible with standard DVDs and most recordable DVD formats, and standard music CDs. Standard DVDs are upscaled up to 1080p via the HDMI output. Onboard decoding or undecoded bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD is provided via HDMI. The BDP-320 aheres to Blu-ray Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) specifications, and also BDP320 incoporates Precision Quartz Lock System (PQLS) for jitterless audio transmission between the BDP320 and compatible Pioneer home theater receivers for better audio CD playback performance using the HDMI connection.
