| Although Blu-ray Disc player and Disc sales have been on a steady upward pace since the end of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD format war, growth has not been as robust as the previous DVD growth timeline.
Of course, the current state of the economy doesn't help as many have postponed consumer electronics-related purchases. However, the other wrinkle is that Blu-ray Disc releases of new films have actually done very well, but sales of classic and older films that were previously released on DVD aren't. That is to be expected; since all Blu-ray Disc players can also play DVDs, many consumers don't see the need to replace their existing DVD collections.
This is where Disney comes in. Apparently, recent Blu-ray editions of previously DVD released classic films that may already be in many consumer's collections aren't doing as well as expected. However, what Disney may be failing to also see is that their Blu-ray Disc releases carry much higher price tags than releases from some of the other studios, which further limits their purchase and replacement appeal. What you're looking at here is the latest addition to the Sony Blu-ray family. The BDP-N460 seemingly fits right in between the BDP-S360 and the BDP-S560 with an MSRP of $249. What sets it apart from its little brother is the fact that it can use its included network jack for more than just BD-Live and it features a USB port on the front, in addition to the one on the back for optional BD-Live storage. There's no built in WiFi or MKV support like other brands though, but it is shipping with access to YouTube and to Bravia Internet Video, and in addition Sony promises Netflix Watch Instantly later this fall. Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. The SL80 line has 240Hz processing, but older CCFL backlighting means a 300,000:1 measured contrast ratio and 1.8-inch thick design, but the 42-, 47-, and 55-inch models will be available this August for $1,599, $1,899 and $2,799, respectively. Yeah, that very panel is making a second debut here in Atlanta, but it has somehow managed to slim down to 6.4 millimeters (at its thinnest point) and get a November ship date in the US. Weighing just 12.5 pounds, the 32-inch set packs a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, edged-light LED backlight system, a super wide color gamut (100 percent of sRGB and 90 percent of Adobe RGB), a 1080p native resolution, two HDMI sockets, VGA input and an RS-232c control port. We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic's upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best "consumer" 3D we've seen -- almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn't much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago, and the only word we have on release at the moment is "next year." Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it's ready for a disc release -- we've certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially "shallow" on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we've yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic's presentation was more an opportunity to be "blown away" by the company's awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below.

| Now that Apple's put a camcorder on board its iPod Nano, what do you think Flip video is going to do? The company's released its next generation Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder, that's what. The $230 shooter expands its capacity to 8GB versus its 4GB predecessor, giving you two hours of sweet 720p video. Making it easier to use is a bigger 2-inch LCD (up from 1.5 inches), and in addition to that signature USB plug that flips out, there's also an HDMI connection.
We're fond of this Flip MinoHD's updated rounded-off look and brushed-aluminum front, and if you don't like its silver color, you can specify your own custom case on the Flip website. Now all the Flip designers need to do is add image stabilization to this 720p camcorder, and it might actually be worth its $230 price.

Just because Toshiba has given up on HD DVD and moved on, doesn't mean the format war is totally over for red. According to a report by a Japanese TV station, its successor, China Blue HD is actually leading Blu-ray in marketshare in that country. Of course, based on the article found by our friends at FormatWarCentral, all we have to go on is a machine translated description of a video in a language we don't speak describing the apparent initial success of the government backed format in a socialist republic. If you need more evidence than that to declare the format war officially restarted, you're probably a communist, but before we drag you in front of the Un-American activities committee check out the video for a peek at the slick new CBHD cases that The Onion will surely be shipping its videos in very soon.

| 3D is becoming more and more prevalent in movies, so why not in video games? Why not indeed. The PlayStation 3 is hopping on the 3D bandwagon next year, bringing a 3D mode to the console that'll work with all existing games sometime next year.
Of course, in order to enjoy this, you'll need a new TV that supports 3D. So it may be more than just the year it takes for Sony to get this firmware out to PS3s to make it commonplace. But it's an exciting look at where consoles will be going in the not-too-distant future, or at least whenever you buy your next TV.

When we first got our hands-on the 400 disc MegaChanger pictured above we'd hoped it would be out a little earlier; but never the less the wait is almost over as Sony officially announced plans to release the BDP-CX7000ES in August, for the hard to swallow price of $1,900 -- about $400 less than rumored. The good news is that it does just about everything we can think of, like handle any Blu-ray Disc, DVD or CD with ease, and of course works with the latest codecs delivered via bitstream or LPCM. Now if you just have to have a Blu-ray changer, but wish it was half the price, you can wait a few more months for the BDP-CX960 for $800. You will however have to be willing to forgo things like RS-232 and IR-in, as well as the ES badge. Also shipping in August with the ES MegaChanger is the BDP-S1000ES. This standalone Blu-ray player is at the top of line and for $700 you get just about every feature and spec Blu-ray has to offer, as well as built-in WiFi and a DLNA client. Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA's booth is Blu-ray -- at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off, while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn't so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry, and by the time we'd dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it's clear that the company hasn't abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray. The company is looking into a solution that uses a Blu-ray disc and BD Live to stream internet media to the player, and has packed in decent codec support for playing back media off of the BDX2000's SD card reader. We're sure Toshiba will figure out its P500 woes before the laptop ships to consumers, but there's no lack of interestingness in these first displays of Toshiba's "commitment" to the Blu-ray format. Today has seen several reports that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed a Blu-ray drive accessory for the Xbox 360. The purported revelation came from a Gizmodo interview, during which Ballmer said that 360 owners wanting a Blu-ray player could purchase "Blu-ray drives as accessories."
Clearing the air, Microsoft's Larry Hryb (a.k.a. Major Nelson) has gone on the record saying that the company has "no plans" for a 360 Blu-ray drive, adding that Ballmer was actually referring to Blu-ray drives for PCs. Hryb reiterates -- as did Ballmer -- that the main push for the Xbox 360 will be streaming media, noting specifically that the upcoming Dashboard update will bring instant 1080p streaming, a feature of the Zune Video Marketplace.

| Now that Internet service providers are showing signs of opening up more upload bandwidth, maybe now webcams will finally find their way into mainstream acceptance. Microsoft will be doing its part when on September 9th it rolls out this gorgeous LifeCam Cinema 720p, the first consumer webcam to support 720p video at 30 frames per second.
Microsoft gives you a lot for your $80, including an autofocusing glass lens, noise-canceling mic and sturdy aluminum construction. Now all we need to do is get Skype to catch up to this high standard and start allowing 720p/30 webcams on its network.
For now, Microsoft says this LifeCam Cinema is compatible with Windows Live Messenger (as well as Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Live Photo Gallery), so maybe we can get used to that instead of Skype for now. It's not that surprising to learn Best Buy will be among those delivering a 1080p LCD with Blu-ray disc player packed in under its Insignia store brand, as we've been expecting rebadged units from overseas to hit the value market for some time. Marked "coming soon" at $599, it's easily a few hundred less than a comparable model from Sharp, but buyers will have to live without some of the newer line items like 120Hz motion processing and a contrast ratio higher than 20,000:1. Though we don't expect a lot in terms of load times, audio support or other features (no specs on the Blu-ray player noted) we're sure a bedroom or dorm room somewhere will find a spot for the NS-LBD32X. Look, we've seen an awful lot of HDTVs in our day -- one lap around the average CEDIA show floor makes your local Best Buy look awfully small -- and to this day we've yet to put our peepers on a more stunning set than Mitsubishi's LaserVue HDTV. Sure, it's fat, ugly and expensive, but the image is otherworldly. Before Mitsu can even take the logical next step, a California startup has arisen to introduce what it calls the world's first laser-based 3D HDTV. We're talking 1080p 3D like you've never seen before, with CTO Edmund Sandberg noting that this production is smoother than RealD, Dolby, film and pretty much every other 3D solution. The secret here is in the speed; this set is so fast that the image "no longer needs to flash from one eye to the other," and no flashing should equate to no headaches. Too bad there's no planned release date, but we're still cautiously optimistic for a sneak peek (in addition to the video past the break) at CES 2010.

| Square Enix is the biggest game developer in Japan, so when president Yoichi Wada speaks, people listen. And when he says that Nintendo is prepping a next-gen, high definition Wii with a brand-new motion controller for 2011, we believe him.
The current Wii is by far the most underpowered of the current crop of gaming consoles, so it makes sense that they'd be working on an update far earlier than Sony and Microsoft. Heck, it doesn't do HD! In this day and age, that seems crazy. So will 2011 be the year of the Wii 2? We'll just have to wait and see.

We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299. It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.
If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

While the Xbox 360 Sky Player apparently launched in the UK yesterday as planned, things veered away from the plan almost immediately thereafter. The service was "suspended" shortly after launch, for what must be the best possible problem in Microsoft's eyes: too many subscribers.
"Unfortunately due to the unprecedented levels of simultaneous demand," a statement on Xbox.com reads, "we did not have the capacity to satisfy all service requests and therefore temporarily suspended all access to the service." The service is being reinstated in phases today, presumably with some upgrades in place to deal with the demand. In case you hadn't already learned your lesson and started checking behind the displays while HDTV shopping, the HD Guru points out another element of the in-store experience that throws off buyers (and likely contributes to the LCD vs. plasma choices we find so infuriating): lighting. In case you don't recall from your last trek to a big box superstore, the lighting is quite often stuck on blinding making it nearly impossible to discern any difference in picture quality between televisions, specifically in terms of contrast and black levels (the pictures above are of the same value priced display, at left, under normal home lighting, at right, how it looks under some store lighting setups.) Tested with an illuminance meter, all the stores (except Best Buy's Magnolia showrooms) averaged well above home ambient lighting levels, with Wal-Mart and Costco measuring the highest at 411.66 and 742.77 lux. Though they've been floating around retail channels for a few weeks, Best Buy and Netflix have finally made official a partnership bringing streaming to the latest Insignia Blu-ray players. The NS-BRDVD3 runs $179, while the NS-WBRDVD edition tosses in WiFi for $20 more, while they won't stream out of the box, a firmware update just made available should add all the . These two keep the (we'll be nice and call it plain) styling of earlier models, and likely live up to the family reputation of "basic Blu-ray playback at a bargain" reported on the second generation of players. Of course, the BD-P1600 offers more features and a nicer reputation at about the same price, but Reward Zone members may want to think twice, with AVS Forum posters mentioning the NS-BRDVD3 can be had for just $99.99 through the 24th. Now that everything Zune HD is official and available for pre-order, Microsoft has seen fit to loose official specs, putting to rest -- at least until we can do a full hands on -- questions about what to expect from the OLED touchscreen packing device. From dimensions (52.7 mm x 102.1 mm x 8.9 mm, 2.6 oz) to battery life (24 hours for music with wireless off, up to 4 hours of video) and charge time (3 hours, 2 hours to 90%.) While the offical site (incorrectly) currently lists max video res at barely-better-than-DVD 720 x 480, we contacted Microsoft and received the official specs on video support, and if for some reason you needed to hear it again: the Tegra chip is a beast. Ready for HDTV playback when it's plugged into the AV dock, the Zune software supports up to 1280 x 720, 30 frames per second at a max 14 Mbps bitrate for WMV HD and h.264 sources. Confirmed still a bummer? No wireless video streaming from the Zune Video Marketplace, though the specs do indicate that purchases and rentals will work across all three screens, PC, Zune and Xbox 360. Yet another player that doesn't just let you play Blu-ray
Owners of any of the 2009 Panasonic Blu-ray players launched earlier in the year will now be able to get more than just Blu-ray on their TV following a deal between the TV maker and Amazon.
According to Panasonic Current owners of Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray Disc players will automatically received a free software update on Tuesday in the US to be able to access Amazon's Video On Demand service.
The players, which were launched in April, will be able to access some 45,000 titles, a 1000 of which are in HD, to download directly to the player to watch from Amazon's on demand service.
Models to get the software update include the DMP-BD60, BD70V, BD80 and the company's portable Blu-ray Disc player, the B15.
In addition to Amazon Video On Demand, VIERA CAST will continue to provide access to YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Bloomberg News and weather information says Panasonic.
It is not certain whether or not UK customers will be getting a similar update.

Coming straight out of a brand new 10G production facility in Sakai, Sharp's line of LX HDTVs (in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch sizes) are all sporting the latest in LCD technology with UV²A panels and LED backlighting. Unfortunately, like Sony, these new screens abandon the higher quality RGB LED technology of the pricey XS1 series for cheaper white LEDs. Still, with a price of around $5,000 for a 52-inch compared to the $12,000 sticker shock of the XS1, it's easy to see why the switch was made. Other improvements include a light sensor for auto-calibration, a six speaker (5 speakers on the 40-inch) integrated 2.1 channel sound system with "Duo Bass" subwoofer and the usual assortment of VOD and AQUOS network support in store for Japanese buyers this November. While already available on a few U.S. models expect the new tech to spread across Sharp's U.S. lineup shortly, not to mention Sony and anyone other parties interested in a piece of the company's suddenly expanded manufacturing muscle.

Don't think you can sell the kids short anymore, keeping the Blu-ray copy at home and taking DVD rips on the road, now that Panasonic is ready to deliver its in-dash Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD screen packing nav unit in September. We got a good peek at these back in April and the specs haven't changed, with the Profile 1.1 Bonus View compatible CY-BB1000D taking care of Blu-ray duties and featuring the same UniPhier guts as the company's line of living room Blu-ray players. The CN-HX3000D is a WXGA 1280x720p 7-inch LED backlit widescreen display ready to play back media via standard HDMI, iPod connector, SD card or its digital TV tuner, powered by Windows Automotive with navigation duties assisted by Google Maps and Yahoo! Japan. The CY-BB1000D is ¥99,750 ($1,057) and the CN-HX3000D is ¥365,400 ($3,872), and both arrive September 10 in Japan. We'll let you decide if around 5 grand is a good price for the in car HD experience (might want to look at custom mounting a DMP-B15, $800 and you can take it with you.)

| This hot little number is an external Blu-Ray player for computers that Asus hopes to have on shelves later this month. What surprised us the most is the fact that the one and only connector you'll see along the sides of the unit is one for a USB attachment — no HDMI, no AC jack to plug this thing into the wall. It does everything via USB.
Hopefully Asus will give it a cooler name than "SBC-04D1S-U" by the time it launches. According to the company it can write DVD-Rs and CD-Rs in addition to reading Blu-Ray. It also has a "Turbo Engine for enhanced USB Connectivity" — which is vaguely responsible for cranking HD goodness to your screen — and comes with a vertical stand and Cyberlink software.
Pricing information isn't available just yet, but we'll let you know when we do.

Can't wait until December for Toshiba's CELL REGZA LCD? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840x2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within -- exact color, accurate picture and reliability -- thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it's cheaper than JVC's $175k 4K projector, unless you're mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can't live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now.

Hold on before you run out to buy a new TV! You may have seen the report on Engadget stating that, according to a Sony rep, all PS3 games will run in 3-D with a software update next year. We contacted Sony ourselves to learn more about what sounded like a major megaton to let slip at a trade show. Sony told us that the company is "conducting a technological investigation" of whether it's even possible to do that. As for specifics: "there is no plan for the market launch of this at this time."
If you're dying to look at a 3-D game right now, Engadget also captured a video of Wipeout HD being played in 3-D, which you can see above. For some reason, the 3-D effect doesn't come through when viewed in an embedded video recording -- even with the glasses in front of the lens. IFA 2009: BDP-S560 and BDP-S760 announced
At its IFA press conference, Sony has announced two new Blu-Ray players that come with Wi-Fi functionality. That'll mean that you won't have to fiddle with plugging an ethernet cable into the back of the units.
The BDP-S560 and BDP-S760 have wireless-n standard connectivity, and are also WPS-enabled for ease of connection. Firmware updates and BD-Live capabilities can then be accessed without having to deal with cables.
Both Blu-ray players are also DLNA certified, meaning that you'll be able to use Windows functionality to send pictures and video to the players from your laptop. They have upscaling for DVDs and have a 6-second quickstart feature that the company claims is "unrivalled by other products available today".
The BDP-S760 is the flagship model and in addition to the above functionality contains an "HD Reality Enhancer". That should smooth image tones and reduce noise to create more a realistic picture, if the company is to believed. The BDP-S760 also includes multi-channel headphone surround for generating a 7.1 experience on stereo earphones.
No pricing or availability was provided.

Streaming movie service
LG has announced that it's adding movie streaming capability to its HDTV range in a deal with VUDU - a company that provides on-demand video over the web.
A library of over 2,000 high-definition movies will be available, as will some TV shows. The company says that there's no monthly fees and no additional hardware, and that you'll get full 1080p resolution and 5.1 surround sound.
To get the package, you'll need a LG's NetCast Entertainment Access, and a TV with an ethernet port. The compatible TVs range from 42-inch to 60-inch and also have content from Netflix, Yahoo Widgets, and YouTube. Existing LG Broadband TV owners should get the VUDU service next month, the company says.

In an anncouncement that created some brief excitement at CEDIA, JVC introduced the first Blu-ray Disc recorders available in the U.S. market at a press conference early Thursday morning. However, the excitement was very short-lived when the actual details were revealed.
The new JVC Blu-ray disc recorders cannot, I repeat, cannot record high definition television programming, either from over-the-air (there is no built-in tuner or RF input), cable, or satellite; there are no HDMI or Component video inputs for recording hi-def video, only standard definition composite and S-Video.
However, each recorder comes equipped with a either a 250GB or 500GB hard drive and can record either standard or hi-def content from SD Cards and digital camcorders via USB or Firewire interface. The target market for these recorders is not the mainstream consumer, but video editors and related professionals.
The SR-HD1250 is priced at $1,995 and the SR-HD1500 is priced at $2,550. Both units will be sold through JVC's professional division. For more details, check out the Official Announcement from JVC. IFA 2009: Panasonic claims close collaboration with Hollywood standard
Panasonic has announced its version of how Full HD 3DTV viewing should be done as demoed on the company's 103-inch mega-plasma in the press conference at IFA 2009 today.
Unlike Sony's 3D Bravia LCD solution, Panasonic believes that a far better quality experience can be achieved through PDP plasma technology which is touted to offer a less blurry image and a far crisper feel. The system will be 3D through Blu-ray and the set will transmit a true, 1080p image on two channels - one to each eye - thus ensuring a Full HD 3D result when it's put together in the viewer's brain.
Although, neither the film industry nor the broadcasters have as yet to decide on the standard of 3D which the tech companies are to support, Panasonic has claimed that it has been working closely with Hollywood to lead the way in consumer 3D and even got Avatar's producer, Jon Landau, up on stage to prove.
No official 3D products were announced but the company is showing clear intent.

New players with all the usual bells and whistles
Philips has announced two new Blu-ray players at IFA in Berlin as it continues to push ahead with the format that has trebled in popularity in the last year.
The new BDP7500 will be housed in an "real" aluminum (we not sure what fake aluminum is) and offer full HD 1080p at 24 fps for cinema-like images.
The players will also get DivX Ultra for enhanced playback of DivX media files, DVD video upscaling to 1080p via HDMI for near-HD images, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA for HD 7.1 surround sound. BD-Live (Profile 2.0), and USB drive connectivity complete the package.
A rather niche technology also included is subtitle shift allowing you to change the location of the subtitles on screen.
The players themselves will come with touch sensitive controls and for the design conscious three different colours; blue, red and black.
No word on pricing, but expect the devices to hit the UK early next year.

In a column published today on Develop, Black Rock Studio (Pure, Split/Second) technical director David Jeffrries revealed that Microsoft has removed an item from its TCRs (Technical Certification Requirements) that stated all Xbox 360 games must run at a minimum of 1280x720 (720p) resolution if the system is in HD mode. According to Jeffries, this was done earlier this year so that developers could be "free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."
TCRs are technical "rules" that all games developed for a given platform must adhere to in order to be certified for release. Of course, some games that have skirted this specific TCR have still been allowed on the system; the most notable being Microsoft's own Halo 3, which runs at 1152x640 (progressive).
Joystiq has confirmed with a trusted source familiar with Microsoft's TCRs that Jeffries' claim is legit. Not only that, but, as of March 2009, Xbox 360 developers are no longer required to utilize full-screen anti-aliasing in their games. The elimination of both requirements is especially noteworthy since the console maker had touted that all 360 games would run at a minimum of 720p with at least 2x FSAA since before the hardware launched.
As Jeffries points out in his column, 1280x720 isn't necessarily the "starting point" for HD on many displays and that it's not nearly as crucial as anti-aliasing. It's not clear if the back-tracking on Microsoft's part was due to pressure from the development community or not, but we can probably all agree that, as long as a game looks great, it doesn't really matter how its creators got there. Plus plenty of new features say rumours
Apple is expected to add Blu-ray support to the next version of it's iTunes software sources say.
iTunes 9 is expected out in September, and according to rumours adds a number of new features on top of what is currently already available.
Historically the company has shyed away from openly supporting Blu-ray even though it has been a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association for some time.
However, according to earlier rumours from Apple following site Appleinsider, it suggests that might be about to change with new Blu-ray options for the company's iMac range coming soon.
In addition to the Blu-ray support, iTunes 9 users will reportedly get the ability to visually arrange iPhone and iPod apps and possible twitter, facebook integration claim boygeniusreport.
The site doesn't name it's source.

Good looking 5.1 set-up complete with iDock
LG has launched a new Blu-ray home cinema system, the HB954SP, a BD-Live-enabled, Full HD 1080p, 1000 Watt, 5.1 effort.
With five oval satellite Mark-Levinson-tuned speakers, the connected system offers one-click access to YouTube videos, upscaling of standard DVDs, playback from USB and (only) two HDMI inputs.
There's also an iDock for an iPod or iPhone and LG's "Sound Gallery" for easy set-up as well as handy options such as turning off the bass in "night mode".
The system will be available from November 2009, but the really crucial bit for most people - pricing - is yet to be revealed.
LG don't offer RRPs, instead suggesting price comparison sites for an idea of cost, not a great strategy for a product that's yet to be released.

| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? In the States, Pure Digital has launched a new "premium" version of its Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder that sees a few feature additions for an extra $30.
Priced at $229 and boasting 8GB of storage for 2 hours of 720p video, a larger 2-inch screen and an HDMI port, the premium model gets either an aluminium shell or a personalised design from Flip's website. ?
There's also a new version of the FlipShare software with an "automatic Magic Movie mode" that auto-trims and edits clips before uploads.
There's no news on a UK launch for the new higher-end model just yet, but the second generation of Pure Digital's Flip Ultra line only went on sale here in June.

Hollywood's bid to force a yet-to-be-agreed-upon number of households to buy new home theater gear is back in business. The Motion Picture Association of America has once again asked the Federal Communications Commission for the right to selectively control output streams to the TV entertainment systems of consumers. "The pro-consumer purpose" (!) request "is to enable movie studios to offer millions of Americans in-home access to high-value, high definition video content," three MPAA biggies explained during a meeting they held with seven FCC Media Bureau staffers last Thursday.
Consumer groups, electronics makers, pro-consumer bloggers, and consumers, it should be noted, think this idea is a very stinky dog. So did former FCC Chair Kevin Martin. But that does not seem to dissuade the MPAA, whose principals just can't seem to let the issue go. What's interesting about the group's latest filing, however, is that it effectively concedes that the output changes it wants could, in fact, hobble some home video systems.

| Football season is coming up, and we don't want to be caught short with a second-rate HDTV. Trusted HDGuru Gary Merson says the Panasonic TC-P54V10, a 54-inch plasma 1080p set, is "the new king of HDTVs." In his eyes-on review, he lauds the THX-anointed plasma panel's excellent image brightness, low energy consumption, deep black levels, judder-free film reproduction, and impressive "pop."
Judging from his impeccable credibility in the past, if the HDGuru says this $2300 HDTV as the world's best, it probably is. He even says this is comparable or better in nearly every criteria than the revered (and unfortunately, discontinued) Pioneer Kuro plasma HDTVs. We want. Our advice? Wait until next month for the release of Panasonic's 65-inch version of this new "King of HDTVs."

Watching the development of super-thin OLED video displays is a lot like watching a baby grow up. The early pictures show a little, cute, and sometimes clever toddler, showing great promise. Soon the kid starts getting more sophisticated, like this 15-inch OLED HDTV from LG that goes on sale in Korea this November, and the rest of the world next year.
Of course, we're assuming you'll pay a pretty penny for this attractive, ultra-sharp bauble, probably in the neighborhood of Sony's $2500 11-inch XEL-1 OLED display that rolled out a couple of years ago. So LG is next. And then there were two.
Bigger OLED screens can't be that far off, but wait, now we find out LG's 30-inch OLED display has been delayed until 2012, and Sony is putting off its next OLED screen, too. What's the holdup? Entirely new manufacturing techniques must be developed. One day soon, though, these fantastic displays will be cheap.

New features inbound 1st September
Sony has confirmed that the PS3 and PS3 Slim will be getting a software update in the coming weeks bringing with it a host of new features including BBC iPlayer support.
Although the BBC's on demand service has been available in a workaround on the console, Sony has convinced the corporation to make things official.
It will be just one of a number of country specific content deals as the company continues to promote the console as more than just a games machine.
The BBC iPlayer will be available on the 1 September with RTVE, ANTENA 3 and La Sexta in Spain, ZDFmediathek in Germany, NOS in the Netherlands NOS, and the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) in Australia.
Alongside TV web access, PlayStation's entertainment offering was strengthened with the announcement of the PlayStation

Clearly worried the Blu-ray still not enough
Samsung has announced that going forward all its Blu-ray products will come with YouTube support as it continues to try and convince people to embrace the HD format.
With the new service, available from 3rd September, consumers can also enjoy video clips from YouTube on their TV screen. The YouTube service features a variety of video clips, including the most popular or highly rated videos and allows for video search through a mobile phone-like on-screen key pad, says the company.
The news, announced at IFA in Berlin, Germany, comes as the company announcing a range of Blu-ray players including a Blu-ray Soundbar, the BD Crystal Surround AirTrack, for people looking to de-clutter their home theatre/cinema experience.

Through free firmware update
LG has announced that the high-def streaming movie service from VUDU will be available through its BD390 wireless, networked Blu-ray player.
With the VUDU service, currently available on some LG HDTVs, consumers can instantly buy or rent from a library of movies and TV titles.
The VUDU service will be available later this month through a free automatic upgrade, and joins Netflix, Roxio CinemaNow and YouTube content already available.
The BD390 with NetCast Entertainment Access is available now in the US for around $399.

Denon has announced the launch of a "price-conscious" Blu-ray player, the new DBP-160.
The DBP-1610 boasts 1080/24p video output and supports Deep Color as well as x.v.Color and offers 1080p scaling for normal content.
With an Ethernet port for internet access for BD-Live and firmware updates, there's full support of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Offering Divx playback as well as AVCHD playback from DVDs and SD cards, as you'd expect, the new machine plays nice with Denon's A/V product line.
Denon's idea of price-conscious may not be the same as most, however, the DBP-160 will go on sale next month for a penny under ?400.

Western Digital has announced the launch of the WD TV Live HD media player, a revamp of a previous product this time round with networking capabilities as well as support for Full HD 1080p resolution.
WD says the new drive makes it easy to play HD videos stored on USB and network drives, from PCs and Macs, as well as stream content from websites on big screen HDTVs.
Boasting a "more responsive" interface than the previous WD TV HD media player, the Ethernet- and Wi-Fi-enabled new player comes complete with remote control, boasts internet radio, two USB ports, one HDMI port and SPDIF digital output.

Ballmer got it wrong
Kids, Steve Ballmer is lying to you. Yesterday we brought you the news, straight out of the man's mouth, that the Xbox 360 would be getting Blu-ray accessories. Today, Microsoft's PR team has swung into action to try and say they don't exist without explicitly saying "Ballmer was talking out of his arse".
Instead, a Microsoft spokesperson said: "Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC.?As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts this fall when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies".
Given that Ballmer was responding to a question about the Xbox and said "You'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories", we doubt that accessories for the PC had anything to do with what he was saying. More likely Microsoft is trying to firefight some of the damage that Ballmer caused with the casual statement.
We wouldn't be surprised at all if Blu-ray accessories arrived for the console, particularly if Blu-ray movies begin to sell in reasonable numbers at some point. Microsoft just isn't ready to announce that yet.

Although Denon introduced their flagship $4,500 DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray Disc player just this past January at CES, they have just announced a new "flagship quality" Blu-ray Disc player for less than half the price (which is still $1,999).
Just as with the DVD-A1UDC1, the new DBP-4010UDCI meets Profile 2.0 specifications with the required Ethernet port as well as a slot for memory expansion and audio, video, still image file playback via SD card. This player is also playback compatible with Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, but DVD-Audio Discs and SACDs. Also, another welcome feature for audiophiles has a separate 2 channel/7.1 channel analog audio outputs and bass management control, and, for videophiles, the DBP-4010UDCI offers vertical stretch, so that films with 2:35 aspect ratio images can be properly displayed when using projectors with 2:35 aspect ratio lens attachments.
However, one important change from the previous DVD-A1UDCI is the switch from using the the Silicon Optix Realta Chip for DVD upscaling, to the use of the Anchor Bay VRS ABT-2010 Chip for that purpose.
Also, for custom installers, the DBP-4010UDCI is fully equipped with both RS-232 and Wired remote in/out connectors.

Mitsubishi has unveiled a 155-inch OLED TV this week at the CEATEC 2009 event in Japan, showcasing one of the largest displays ever for OLED.
Mainichi Japan says the "OLED display consists of 720 10-centimeter-square OLED blocks that can be rearranged to change the dimensions of the display using Mitsubishi's Aurora Vision LED screens at baseball stadiums."
The screen is also about three times brighter than any current LCD TV. Lifespan is about 200,000 hours.
Being that the OLED blocks are so small means Mitsubishi can create a TV of any size, ranging from the now standard 15-inch TVs to infinity.

To promote high def horse show
In what must be one of the most bizarre publicity stunts of recent time, Sky has helped hook up an ex-international show jumping horse with a 52-inch telly complete with Sky+HD.
Belle De Harlequin or Belly Bumps for short, "one of the most pampered horses in Britain", can also "thank" her owner Vicky Davies for the high tech stable set-up:
"I didn't want Belly Bumps to miss out, so I decided to go after the next best thing, a luxurious stable a stone's throw from the action, kitted out with her winning trophies, horse treats, a grooming station and a 52-inch TV with Sky+HD. People might think it's extravagant but this old timer deserves a little pampering".
Shame on the vet that chimes in with: "Belly Bumps has been responding to the action on screen. The clarity of the images and sound provide a great stimulus, and her ears are constantly pricked forward showing she's engaged with the television. She seems to recognise some of her fellow stable mates and viewing other horses will certainly stop her feeling lonely".
It's all in order to promote 4 days of live coverage of the Longines Royal International Horse Show in high definition on Sky Sports from Thursday 23 July.

pc mini VOT550 looks awfully familiar
The last of a slew of ViewSonic launches is the pc mini VOT550, although, again as with the previous two mini computers, this one comes in two different models with its more basic sibling going under the name of VOT530.
The VOT550 comes with Windows Media Centre and is intended as a home entertainment or home theatre PC and as such, ViewSonic has equipped the top of the line model with a Blu-ray drive. We're not sure how big of a selling point this is, especially as this is a rebadged system from AOpen that we've seen sold under several other brand names in the past.
In terms of features, the VOT550 has a mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, eSATA and a DVI port. A dongle is supplied that turns the DVI port into an HDMI port which allows for easy connectivity to your HD TV.
The VOT530 shuns the Blu-ray drive in favour for a DVD super-multi drive and both models feature slot-in type drive, similar to those in a car CD player. Price wise the VOT530 is going to set you back £494, while the Blu-ray equipped VOT550 ups the price to £678, making both fairly poor value for money compared to the other mini PCs that ViewSonic has just launched.

18.4-inch multimedia monster
Toshiba has announced the launch of the Qosmio X500 boasting a "sleek, glossy black chassis, backlit keyboard and LED-feathertouch controls".
Powered by Intel's latest Quad Core processors and the latest nVIDIA GeForce graphics, the Qosmio X500 claims to deliver "a realistic gameplay experience with intense visuals, vibrant environments and dynamic character effects".
With an 18.4-inch TruBrite Full HD LCD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, a rewritable Blu-ray drive, the X500 appears, on paper at least, to be an entertainment powerhouse.
It also gets Toshiba's Resolution+ upscaling technology, that sees standard definition DVDs and video files upconverted to "near high definition" quality.
Other features include an "HD" webcam, a multi-touch touch pad, fingerprint reader, face recognition, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, eight touch-sensitive multimedia buttons, up to 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, three USB ports all of which offer "Sleep-and-Charge" tech, REGZA-Link HDMI-CEC and a 5-in-1 card reader.
The Qosmio X500 will be available in the UK from late October - no pricing revealed, but it's gonna be steep.

Complete with DirectX 11 capabilities
ATI has just released a new series of graphics cards - the Radeon HD 5700s. Two cards initially make up the range, there's the Radeon HD 5750 and the meatier Radeon HD 5770. Both come with DirectX 11 capabilities and a host of other features that PC tweakers might be interested in.
The company says that this Radeon release is "all about future-proofing your graphics card". It reckons that this generation of cards can cope on high settings with every game currently out and in the near future, too. Plenty of DirectX 11 games are due out before Christmas, including DiRT2, Stalker: Call of Pripyat, and Battleforge that already has a patch that converts it to DX 11.
DirectX 11 brings tessellation, shader model 5, Directcompute 11, HDR texture compression and better multi-threading performance. The cards also support HDMI 1.3, have stream technology support, and come with three outputs so you can play with three monitors at?3 x 2560 x 1600 in what ATI is calling an "Eyefinity" setup.
The 5770 has 1.36 teraFLOPs of computing power and low-ish power consumption of 108W under load and 18W when idle. It comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and will cost $159. There's no UK pricing yet.
The 5750, on the other hand has 1.008 teraFLOPs of computing power and will take up 86W of power under load and 16W when idle. That'll come with the option of 1GB or 512MB of memory, with the former costing $129 and the latter costing more like $110. We'd be surprised if UK prices were lower, even at a 1 to 1 conversion rate.
Still, they're not exceptionally high either, meaning that if you're considering an upgrade then it might be worth asking for one of these in your stocking this Christmas.

Seagate has announced the launch of the new FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player, described as the "next generation home theatre solution designed to instantly and easily connect your digital media library to your home entertainment system".
The player has a docking system that offers a quick and easy way to connect Seagate external hard drives to televisions or home entertainment centres.
With what's said to be an easy to navigate interface and supplied remote control, movies, videos, music and images can then be viewed on a large-screen TV with support for 1080p HD video, DTS 2.0 + Digital Out, and Dolby Digital technology.
There's also two additional USB ports for connecting other USB storage devices and an Ethernet port for network connectivity.
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player is available now for $149.99 (?90 as a direct translation), with a wireless adapter due to be available in October as a separate accessory through Seagate.com for $69.99 (?42).
In addition, Seagate has also announced the FreeAgent DockStar network adapter, that will connect a FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere in or outside of the home (with the Pogoplug service), as well as allowing for file sharing.
"In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application", says Seagate.
The FreeAgent DockStar network adapter is available now for $99.99 (?60). The Pogoplug service for remote access and sharing, is free for a year, then $29.99 per year afterwards.

According to sources speaking to BoyGeniusReport, the upcoming iTunes 9.0 software update will include Blu-ray support and iPhone App management, along with social networking integration.
Blu-ray support would be a welcome addition, and the App management would allow users to connect their iPhone or iPod Touch and visually manage the apps.
Social networking integration would allow easy access to Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm.
For now, this is rumor and Apple has not confirmed or denied any of the details or a release date for iTunes 9.

Earlier this week we reported that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made comments that implied that the company would be bringing Blu-ray accessories to the Xbox 360.
At the time, the notoriously tongue-tied Ballmer had said: "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there -- you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
The company has since released a statement denying the rumor and adding that Ballmer was speaking instead of PC accessories.
"During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360. I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition," says the post on MajorNelson.

Update to their popular model
Adding to the already popular D300 DSLR is the D300s, which brings HD movie capture to the party in a previous-anticipated move by Nikon.
With an effective 12.3-megapixels, the D300s offers 7fps continuous shooting (8 with battery pack) driven by the EXPEED image processor, and a 51-point focusing system.
The new video mode benefits from autofocus whilst shooting, but doesn't stretch to Full HD, instead offering a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 at 24fps. Lower resolution options are also available.
Boosting the video option, you'll be able to attach an external mic thanks to a 3.5mm audio input. Video capture is sadly limited to 5 minutes in 720p, but can be extended to 20 minutes at lower resolutions.
Dual memory card slots have been added, giving you Compact Flash and Secure Digital, with flexible set-up options allowing you to shoot JPEGs to one and RAW to the other, or stills on one and video on the other.
Live View mode can be activated on the 3-inch 920k-dot display, whilst viewing your movies will be a breeze to view thanks to the on-board HDMI slot.
Available from 28 August, the Nikon D300s will set you back £1499.99, body only.

During an interview with Reuters, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings spoke out about the future of the physical DVD, as well as Netflix's plans for the iPhone, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and possible competition from YouTube
The interview in its entirety:
Reuters: What will Netflix subscribers gain from the improvements in the recommendation system?
Hastings: ItÂ’s doubling the quality of our movie recommendation and that helps our subscribers get more enjoyment from movies. Because more often they love the movie they watch. More often the movies recommended will will turn out to be movies that you love. If you watch a couple of movies and donÂ’t like many, you start to watch (sports and other programming). If every movie is incredible, you start to watch more.
Reuters: Netflix video streams on MicrosoftÂ’s Xbox Live system. What about the PS3 and Wii?
Hastings: Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we havenÂ’t characterized it more than that.
Reuters: Any plans to work in partnership with Apple and the iPhone?
Hastings: itÂ’s something thatÂ’s likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.
Reuters: What of YoutubeÂ’s potential movie service?
Hastings: I think there will be a lot of competition in this market: Hulu, Apple, Amazon, Youtube, Blockbuster. Internet video is a huge opportunity. And there will be a lot of people engaged, and that is going to be great for the consumer. All of us are going to innovate and compete with each other and provide more and more value to the consumer.
Reuters: How far along are we on the transition to all digital video watching?
Hastings: There will be people doing DVD-by-mail in 15 or 20 years, so I think DVD will last a long time. Our best guess is that DVD will peak for us in 5 or so years. But it is continuing to grow. And the streaming is exploding. So we are getting nice growth in the DVD side and huge growth on the streaming side.
Reuters: What do you make of BlockbusterÂ’s store closing plan?
Hastings: Blockbuster and Redbox really compete on doing the inexpensive new releases, and we are much more the streaming and the catalog. Their closings donÂ’t really benefit us. It will benefit Redbox more than it does us.
Reuters: Have you been approached about an acquisition or partnership?
