 | New HD and SD camcorders added to our Ratings (Consumer Reports, 7/29/2009 4:00pm) |
| Sony's HDR-SR12 HD camcorder is just one of the many models you'll find in our latest Ratings of high-definition camcorders. (Click to enlarge.) [ Photo: Consumer Reports ] We've just added more than a dozen new camcorders to our Ratings, including nine high-definition and five standard-definition models. The new batches reveal a number of trends that, for the most part, will benefit consumers: Both HD and SD camcorders are cheaper to buy: About 18 months ago, the cheapest HD camcorder in our Ratings was $590. Now, there are three models available for less than $575. (The cheapest is the Sanyo VPC-CA9, for $375.) Manufacturers are producing more flash-based and hard-disk models and fewer MiniDV and DVD disc models than in the past. However, we still have at least four models of each of these older formats, and they're generally less expensive than the flash and hard-disk models. More optical zoom: SD models have optical zooms as high as 70x. HD models have also increased, with some models including 16x optical zoom lenses. Most models are smaller, lighter and easier to carry. Some can almost slip into a pocket. However, with this reduction in size comes some trade offs, such as the elimination of a viewfinder. This can be a problem when trying to shoot on a bright day, since the sun can wash out the image on your display, making it a challenge to compose your video. One common problem we've found in nearly all HD and SD camcorder models of the past was that they didn't perform well in low light. But our newest batch has some exceptions to this rule, at least among the high-def models. Look to our Ratings to see which HD camcorders excelled in low light. You can check out the latest HD and SD camcorders on our Ratings pages. Also, stay tuned for our upcoming coverage of high-def pocket camcorders, which are smaller still than any of the models in our main Ratings. —Terry Sullivan (Read Full Article) |

| The ability to stream instant movies from a Blu-ray player, once relegated to higher-end models, is moving to the masses with two new Insignia-brand Netflix enabled Blu-ray players from Best Buy. The two models with Netflix access are the Insignia NS-WBRDVD player, sale priced at $200, and the $180 NS-BRDVD3. Both are currently available at stores and on BestBuy.com. The key differentiating feature is that the higher-priced model has built-in Wi-Fi, so you can wirelessly access a home network to connect to the Internet. In addition, the step-up model can decode both Dolby TrueHD [PDF] and DTS-HD Master Audio internally; the entry-level model only decodes Dolby TrueHD internally, though each can output both formats as bitstream if you have an A/V receiver that can decode them. —James K. | New Ratings: Blu-ray players now on CRO (Consumer Reports, 8/05/2009 3:30pm) |
| We’ve just posted our latest high-def Blu-ray Ratings (available to subscribers), and we’re happy to report that almost all the models tested can provide excellent HD and DVD picture quality. In fact, all the models in our Ratings offered excellent high-definition performance, though we did see some differences in how well players handled upconverted film-based programs from standard DVDs. In addition to models from familiar brands, such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony (whose products we’ve previously reviewed), our latest Ratings include the first Blu-ray players from JVC, Sherwood, and Oppo (pictured), a smaller company whose upconverting DVD players earned strong word-of-mouth among the A/V enthusiast community. Check our Ratings to see how well these newcomers did compared to second- and third-generation models from other brands. With satisfying HD picture quality now almost a given, it’s primarily features that differentiate one player from another. For example, while almost all the new models in our Ratings are BD-Live (or BD-Live-ready) players—meaning they can connect to the Internet to access extra content, such as outtakes, additional directors', or actors' commentaries, or even video games, from a movie studio’s servers—some older models lack this feature. All the players in our test have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while the movie is playing. We’re also seeing more Internet-connected players that can now directly access instantly streaming movies from services such as Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand, or music from streaming Internet radio services such as Pandora. Some models offer wireless access to a home network so you don’t need to have a wired Ethernet jack near the player. Although we have seen Blu-ray prices fall since our last test, the addition of these new features has tempered the types of price drops we initially envisioned. As a result, you can still expect to pay $350 to $500 for a top-rated, BD-Live model from a major brand. A less expensive option is to choose a “BD-Live-ready†model; prices typically start at about $250. These players come with an Ethernet connection, but require you to purchase additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) to activate the BD-Live feature. But if you can live without BD-Live, you can save money by choosing one of the BonusView-only players, which typically sell for $200 or less. But we do anticipate prices dropping this fall, even on full-featured models from major brands, as manufacturing efficiencies come into play and brands compete for market share. We’ll be tracking Blu-ray prices over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period, when rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. Also, we recently changed our Blu-ray testing protocol, adding scores for Blu-ray disc load times and remote control operations. With so many players offering excellent picture quality, we’ll continue to adapt our Ratings to include new features or attributes that will help buyers differentiate among the choices.—James... | New Blu-ray player Ratings: Lower prices, more features (Consumer Reports, 10/09/2009 4:03pm) |
| In our largest test of Blu-ray players so far, we found that satisfying picture quality has become almost a given, while features and price vary considerably. You can pay as little as $160 for a recommended model or as much as $500, depending on the capabilities, bells and whistles you’re willing to pay for. Portability commands top dollar. The first portable Blu-ray player we’ve tested, the Panasonic DMP-B15, is priced at $700. Our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers) include 27 models that have a few features in common. All have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while a movie is playing, and all can upconvert standard DVDs to quasi-HD resolutions. Only a handful of the players, mostly priced at $300 and up, have BD-Live, a feature that allows the player to access directors’ commentaries, deleted scenes, games, and more from the movie studio’s servers. Other models are BD-Live-ready. These players, all priced at $200 and up, have the required Ethernet connection, but need additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) for the BD-Live feature to work. Another feature showing up on some of the higher-priced models is the ability to stream movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand, or receive music streams from Internet radio stations such as Pandora. And more players now have USB ports or SD card slots, so you can play digital photos, music and even videos on your TV. One model, a Panasonic, has a built-in VHS player, a space-saving option for those who still watch tapes. Again, you’re not likely to find these features on the lowest-priced players. We expect prices to drop over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period. Rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. —James K. Willcox (Read Full Article) |

 | In the CR Test Labs: New LCD, plasma HDTVs (Consumer Reports, 8/04/2009 2:55pm) |
| The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. It also includes the company’s [email protected] Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access online content, which will soon include instant movies from Blockbuster. Also comes with some preloaded content, such as recipes and games. It can wirelessly connect to a home network via an optional USB wireless dongle. Sharp Aquos LC-52E77UN: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Sharp features a new design, 120Hz technology and has five HDMI inputs, the most we’ve seen. Sharp Aquos LC-C4067UN: This value-priced Aquos is a 40-inch 1080p LCD sold via the warehouse clubs. Sony Bravia KDL-46Z5100: This pricey 46-inch Sony LCD has Sony’s Motionflow 240Hz technology, which actually quadruples the TVs frame rate, plus the Bravia’s widget-based... (Read Full Article) |

 | NEWS: ViewSonic launches Blu-ray home theatre PC (Pocket-lint, 7/23/2009 4:39pm) |
pc mini VOT550 looks awfully familiar
The last of a slew of ViewSonic launches is the pc mini VOT550, although, again as with the previous two mini computers, this one comes in two different models with its more basic sibling going under the name of VOT530.
The VOT550 comes with Windows Media Centre and is intended as a home entertainment or home theatre PC and as such, ViewSonic has equipped the top of the line model with a Blu-ray drive. We're not sure how big of a selling point this is, especially as this is a rebadged system from AOpen that we've seen sold under several other brand names in the past.
In terms of features, the VOT550 has a mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, eSATA and a DVI port. A dongle is supplied that turns the DVI port into an HDMI port which allows for easy connectivity to your HD TV.
The VOT530 shuns the Blu-ray drive in favour for a DVD super-multi drive and both models feature slot-in type drive, similar to those in a car CD player. Price wise the VOT530 is going to set you back £494, while the Blu-ray equipped VOT550 ups the price to £678, making both fairly poor value for money compared to the other mini PCs that ViewSonic has just launched.

 | VUDU comes to LG broadband HDTVs (AfterDawn, 9/02/2009 2:23pm) |
Owners of LG HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access now have access to another source of online video. LG announced an automatic update which adds the Vudu video rental (and purchase) service to LCD models .42LH50, 47LH50 and 55LH50 and plasma models 50PS80 and 60PS80.
If you have one of these TVs (and it is connected to the internet) you should see a VUDU option in the Netcast Interface. LG broadband HDTVs were announced at this year's CES and began selling in June with support for Netflix's Watch Instantly streaming video service already available.
Unlike Netflix, which packages streaming video with online DVD rentals, VUDU uses a pay as you go model. They also give you access to more new movies on the same day they are released on DVD and give you the option to purchase them.Permalink | Comments

 | Netflix, Best Buy deal brings Watch Instantly streaming to even cheaper Blu-ray players (Engadget, 10/21/2009 2:26am) |
Though they've been floating around retail channels for a few weeks, Best Buy and Netflix have finally made official a partnership bringing streaming to the latest Insignia Blu-ray players. The NS-BRDVD3 runs $179, while the NS-WBRDVD edition tosses in WiFi for $20 more, while they won't stream out of the box, a firmware update just made available should add all the . These two keep the (we'll be nice and call it plain) styling of earlier models, and likely live up to the family reputation of "basic Blu-ray playback at a bargain" reported on the second generation of players. Of course, the BD-P1600 offers more features and a nicer reputation at about the same price, but Reward Zone members may want to think twice, with AVS Forum posters mentioning the NS-BRDVD3 can be had for just $99.99 through the 24th. Decisions, decisions. | LG unveils new slim design LCD HDTVs due this fall (Engadget, 7/31/2009 1:14am) |
Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. The SL80 line has 240Hz processing, but older CCFL backlighting means a 300,000:1 measured contrast ratio and 1.8-inch thick design, but the 42-, 47-, and 55-inch models will be available this August for $1,599, $1,899 and $2,799, respectively. | Mitsubishi unveils REAL line of Blu-ray burning, super upconverting LCDs (Engadget, 8/20/2009 3:52pm) |
Providing some competition for Sharp's DX series, Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off of its REAL Series LCD HDTVs, including a set with built-in hard drives and Blu-ray recorders, plus a few more that lack the recording, but throw in super resolution upconversion that claims to make even the worst SD look better than ever. Even if that's just hype, we hope it fares better than the company's ill-fated 120Hz processing. The 37- (1080p) and 32-inch (720p) BHR300 models feature their disc drives in the stand, rather than back-mounted approach of the AQUOS, plus 320GB HDDs, SDHC slot, plus i.LINK and USB connectors that let owners edit video from a camcorder on the TV before saving to disc or hard drive. The MZW300 models are all 1080p, in 40-, 42- and 52-inch sizes, with Diamond Engine Pro IV HD super resolution tech, the latest and most power efficient Diamond panel with 20,000:1 contrast ratio, built in 5.1 Dolby Digital decoder, virtual surround speakers and a talking program guide feature. These hit shelves in Japan in late October ranging in price from ¥350,000 ($3,705) for the LCD-52MZW300 to ¥200,000 ($2,117) for the LCD-32BHR300.Filed under: Displays, HDTV, Home EntertainmentMitsubishi unveils REAL line of Blu-ray burning, super upconverting LCDs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 10:52:00 EST. | LG’s BD390 Blu-ray player, now equipped with Vudu’s streaming movie service and Rotten Tomatoes ratings.(Click to enlarge.) [PHOTO: Courtesy of Vudu] Vudu, the movie-streaming service whose high-def HDX video format we recently evaluated on an LG plasma TV, is now available on the company’s BD390 Blu-ray player, one of the top-rated players in our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers). But don’t be alarmed if you boot up the player and see shiny red vegetables, er, fruit, all over the screen—Vudu is now incorporating ratings from the Rotten Tomatoes website in its list of movies available for sale or rent. You can sort selections in your Vudu movie lists by the ratings score (which includes the site's beloved Tomatometer and fresh/rotten tomato icons), and see summary reviews from some of the top movie critics from around the country. And Vudu has redesigned its movie page to deliver the extra content more interactively. If you own, or are about to buy, a BD390 Blu-ray player, it should receive a free Vudu-enabling firmware update automatically the next time it connects to LG’s NetCast online service. The player can connect to the Internet either using a wired Ethernet connection, or wirelessly via the player’s built-in Wi-Fi connection). Vudu is also available on 42- and 47-inch LH50 LCD TVs and 50- and 60-inch PS80 plasma models. —James K. Willcox (Read Full Article) |

Yet another player that doesn't just let you play Blu-ray
Owners of any of the 2009 Panasonic Blu-ray players launched earlier in the year will now be able to get more than just Blu-ray on their TV following a deal between the TV maker and Amazon.
According to Panasonic Current owners of Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray Disc players will automatically received a free software update on Tuesday in the US to be able to access Amazon's Video On Demand service.
The players, which were launched in April, will be able to access some 45,000 titles, a 1000 of which are in HD, to download directly to the player to watch from Amazon's on demand service.
Models to get the software update include the DMP-BD60, BD70V, BD80 and the company's portable Blu-ray Disc player, the B15.
In addition to Amazon Video On Demand, VIERA CAST will continue to provide access to YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Bloomberg News and weather information says Panasonic.
It is not certain whether or not UK customers will be getting a similar update.

 | LG LH-series wireless HDTVs now available Stateside (Engadget, 9/10/2009 6:12pm) |
Seems like slim wireless HDTVs are the CEDIA special, and LG's joining in the fun by announcing official US availability of the wireless LH-series, first launched at CES. No surprises here apart from price, they're exactly as they were when they popped into the FCC: the high-end $4,799 55-inch 55LHX has a local-dimming LED backlight, an 80,000:1 contrast ratio with 240Hz motion ruining enhancement and is less than an inch thick, while the LH85 line offers both $2,399 47-inch and $3,199 55-inch models. Check out our demo from CES for some hands-on with the ASW1000 Media Box, which is where the wireless HD action goes down.Filed under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentLG LH-series wireless HDTVs now available Stateside originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 13:12:00 EST. | California to ban energy-hungry HDTVs? (AfterDawn, 9/19/2009 4:04am) |
According to the LATimes, the California Energy Commission is actively considering banning sales of "energy-hungry" HDTVs, setting a new efficiency standard that will help offset the massive energy use in the state.
If the proposal goes through, sales of all non energy-efficient models will be banned by 2011 and even more strict standards will occur in 2013.
The public has a 45-day period to comment on the proposal, beginning Monday, and approval goes to vote in November. If approved, California's electricity consumption will drop enough to save $8.1 billion USD in 10 years.
If approved, the Consumer Electronics Association says about 25 percent of all HDTVs available will have to be removed from store shelves. The group also notes that any would-be customer could simply drive over a state and buy a non-restricted TV if they choose to however.Permalink | Comments

 | Toshiba makes timid Blu-ray showing at IFA, still believes in other forms of HD distribution (Engadget, 9/04/2009 7:07pm) |
Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA's booth is Blu-ray -- at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off, while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn't so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry, and by the time we'd dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it's clear that the company hasn't abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray. The company is looking into a solution that uses a Blu-ray disc and BD Live to stream internet media to the player, and has packed in decent codec support for playing back media off of the BDX2000's SD card reader. We're sure Toshiba will figure out its P500 woes before the laptop ships to consumers, but there's no lack of interestingness in these first displays of Toshiba's "commitment" to the Blu-ray format. | Sharp combines its latest LCD improvements in LX series HDTVs (Engadget, 9/30/2009 9:12pm) |
Coming straight out of a brand new 10G production facility in Sakai, Sharp's line of LX HDTVs (in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch sizes) are all sporting the latest in LCD technology with UV²A panels and LED backlighting. Unfortunately, like Sony, these new screens abandon the higher quality RGB LED technology of the pricey XS1 series for cheaper white LEDs. Still, with a price of around $5,000 for a 52-inch compared to the $12,000 sticker shock of the XS1, it's easy to see why the switch was made. Other improvements include a light sensor for auto-calibration, a six speaker (5 speakers on the 40-inch) integrated 2.1 channel sound system with "Duo Bass" subwoofer and the usual assortment of VOD and AQUOS network support in store for Japanese buyers this November. While already available on a few U.S. models expect the new tech to spread across Sharp's U.S. lineup shortly, not to mention Sony and anyone other parties interested in a piece of the company's suddenly expanded manufacturing muscle.
