We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299. It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.
If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

Sure it's summertime in New York and not January in Las Vegas, but that didn't stop LG from rolling out a couple new lines of LCD HDTVs today. The new SL80 and SL90 models don't bring new high water marks on the spec sheets, but feature LG's take on the "borderless" design trend that's the rage these days, built from a single edge to edge piece of glass with a slim bezel and Invisible Speaker design. The top of the line SL90 is due later this year for an unspecified price range in 42- and 47-inch sizes with LED backlighting contributing to its 3,000,000:1 claimed contrast ratio and 1.15 inch depth, plus 120Hz TruMotion processing. The SL80 line has 240Hz processing, but older CCFL backlighting means a 300,000:1 measured contrast ratio and 1.8-inch thick design, but the 42-, 47-, and 55-inch models will be available this August for $1,599, $1,899 and $2,799, respectively. pc mini VOT550 looks awfully familiar
The last of a slew of ViewSonic launches is the pc mini VOT550, although, again as with the previous two mini computers, this one comes in two different models with its more basic sibling going under the name of VOT530.
The VOT550 comes with Windows Media Centre and is intended as a home entertainment or home theatre PC and as such, ViewSonic has equipped the top of the line model with a Blu-ray drive. We're not sure how big of a selling point this is, especially as this is a rebadged system from AOpen that we've seen sold under several other brand names in the past.
In terms of features, the VOT550 has a mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, eSATA and a DVI port. A dongle is supplied that turns the DVI port into an HDMI port which allows for easy connectivity to your HD TV.
The VOT530 shuns the Blu-ray drive in favour for a DVD super-multi drive and both models feature slot-in type drive, similar to those in a car CD player. Price wise the VOT530 is going to set you back £494, while the Blu-ray equipped VOT550 ups the price to £678, making both fairly poor value for money compared to the other mini PCs that ViewSonic has just launched.

Hey, remember that ultra skinny, LED-backlit HDTV that JVC showed off at CEDIA UK earlier this year? The seven millimeter-thin LT-32WX50? Yeah, that very panel is making a second debut here in Atlanta, but it has somehow managed to slim down to 6.4 millimeters (at its thinnest point) and get a November ship date in the US. Weighing just 12.5 pounds, the 32-inch set packs a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, edged-light LED backlight system, a super wide color gamut (100 percent of sRGB and 90 percent of Adobe RGB), a 1080p native resolution, two HDMI sockets, VGA input and an RS-232c control port. The pain? Just under $3,000, or in other words, a small fortune.

| This hot little number is an external Blu-Ray player for computers that Asus hopes to have on shelves later this month. What surprised us the most is the fact that the one and only connector you'll see along the sides of the unit is one for a USB attachment — no HDMI, no AC jack to plug this thing into the wall. It does everything via USB.
Hopefully Asus will give it a cooler name than "SBC-04D1S-U" by the time it launches. According to the company it can write DVD-Rs and CD-Rs in addition to reading Blu-Ray. It also has a "Turbo Engine for enhanced USB Connectivity" — which is vaguely responsible for cranking HD goodness to your screen — and comes with a vertical stand and Cyberlink software.

| For those that are still Blu-ray doubters, the trend is against you. Blu-ray has not only been on a continuous growth pattern despite the current lackluster economy, but may experience substantially increased growth as a result of four new developments.
First: The large number of Blu-ray Disc players introduced at the recent CEDIA EXPO from both mainstream and niche-brand manufacturers.
Second: Sony has revealed that its new Playstation 3 Slim (which has a built-in Blu-ray Disc player) has sold more than 1 million units since it was released on September 1st.

New features inbound 1st September
Sony has confirmed that the PS3 and PS3 Slim will be getting a software update in the coming weeks bringing with it a host of new features including BBC iPlayer support.
Although the BBC's on demand service has been available in a workaround on the console, Sony has convinced the corporation to make things official.
It will be just one of a number of country specific content deals as the company continues to promote the console as more than just a games machine.
The BBC iPlayer will be available on the 1 September with RTVE, ANTENA 3 and La Sexta in Spain, ZDFmediathek in Germany, NOS in the Netherlands NOS, and the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) in Australia.

The DBP-1610 boasts 1080/24p video output and supports Deep Color as well as x.v.Color and offers 1080p scaling for normal content.
With an Ethernet port for internet access for BD-Live and firmware updates, there's full support of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Filed under: HDTV, PVR Wire, HardwareOnce upon a time, ATI's All-in-Wonder cards were the cream of the crop. The lineup combines a TV tuner with a graphics card. That means you don't need to buy two separate pieces of hardware to capture TV signals and to display those signals on a monitor. But while other hardware makers have been busy putting out HD tuner cards, ATI has been stuck in the dark ages of standard definition.
Now it looks like ATI is back in the game with the ATI All-in-Wonder HD. This PCI Express card has enough oomph to capture HD video and to play back HD video on your PC. It features DirectX 10.1 support, an MPEG2/VC-1/H2.64 decoder, and Vista and AMD Live! certification. It also packs a DVI port and HDMI jack.
On the TV tuner side of things, the AiW HD can handle SD, HD, and ClearQAM signals.The card should be available in July for $199.

Networked drive offers 1080p support
Western Digital has announced the launch of the WD TV Live HD media player, a revamp of a previous product this time round with networking capabilities as well as support for Full HD 1080p resolution.
WD says the new drive makes it easy to play HD videos stored on USB and network drives, from PCs and Macs, as well as stream content from websites on big screen HDTVs.
Boasting a "more responsive" interface than the previous WD TV HD media player, the Ethernet- and Wi-Fi-enabled new player comes complete with remote control, boasts internet radio, two USB ports, one HDMI port and SPDIF digital output.
The WD TV Live Media Player is available now on the high street, online, and at www.shopwd.co.uk for ?119.99.

Although Denon introduced their flagship $4,500 DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray Disc player just this past January at CES, they have just announced a new "flagship quality" Blu-ray Disc player for less than half the price (which is still $1,999).
Just as with the DVD-A1UDC1, the new DBP-4010UDCI meets Profile 2.0 specifications with the required Ethernet port as well as a slot for memory expansion and audio, video, still image file playback via SD card. This player is also playback compatible with Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, but DVD-Audio Discs and SACDs. Also, another welcome feature for audiophiles has a separate 2 channel/7.1 channel analog audio outputs and bass management control, and, for videophiles, the DBP-4010UDCI offers vertical stretch, so that films with 2:35 aspect ratio images can be properly displayed when using projectors with 2:35 aspect ratio lens attachments.
However, one important change from the previous DVD-A1UDCI is the switch from using the the Silicon Optix Realta Chip for DVD upscaling, to the use of the Anchor Bay VRS ABT-2010 Chip for that purpose.
Also, for custom installers, the DBP-4010UDCI is fully equipped with both RS-232 and Wired remote in/out connectors.

Streaming movie service
LG has announced that it's adding movie streaming capability to its HDTV range in a deal with VUDU - a company that provides on-demand video over the web.
A library of over 2,000 high-definition movies will be available, as will some TV shows. The company says that there's no monthly fees and no additional hardware, and that you'll get full 1080p resolution and 5.1 surround sound.
To get the package, you'll need a LG's NetCast Entertainment Access, and a TV with an ethernet port. The compatible TVs range from 42-inch to 60-inch and also have content from Netflix, Yahoo Widgets, and YouTube. Existing LG Broadband TV owners should get the VUDU service next month, the company says.

In the States, Pure Digital has launched a new "premium" version of its Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder that sees a few feature additions for an extra $30.
Priced at $229 and boasting 8GB of storage for 2 hours of 720p video, a larger 2-inch screen and an HDMI port, the premium model gets either an aluminium shell or a personalised design from Flip's website. ?
There's also a new version of the FlipShare software with an "automatic Magic Movie mode" that auto-trims and edits clips before uploads.
There's no news on a UK launch for the new higher-end model just yet, but the second generation of Pure Digital's Flip Ultra line only went on sale here in June.

What you're looking at here is the latest addition to the Sony Blu-ray family. The BDP-N460 seemingly fits right in between the BDP-S360 and the BDP-S560 with an MSRP of $249. What sets it apart from its little brother is the fact that it can use its included network jack for more than just BD-Live and it features a USB port on the front, in addition to the one on the back for optional BD-Live storage. There's no built in WiFi or MKV support like other brands though, but it is shipping with access to YouTube and to Bravia Internet Video, and in addition Sony promises Netflix Watch Instantly later this fall. Seagate has announced the launch of the new FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player, described as the "next generation home theatre solution designed to instantly and easily connect your digital media library to your home entertainment system".
The player has a docking system that offers a quick and easy way to connect Seagate external hard drives to televisions or home entertainment centres.
With what's said to be an easy to navigate interface and supplied remote control, movies, videos, music and images can then be viewed on a large-screen TV with support for 1080p HD video, DTS 2.0 + Digital Out, and Dolby Digital technology.
There's also two additional USB ports for connecting other USB storage devices and an Ethernet port for network connectivity.
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player is available now for $149.99 (?90 as a direct translation), with a wireless adapter due to be available in October as a separate accessory through Seagate.com for $69.99 (?42).
In addition, Seagate has also announced the FreeAgent DockStar network adapter, that will connect a FreeAgent Go portable hard drive to a network, giving access to its content from anywhere in or outside of the home (with the Pogoplug service), as well as allowing for file sharing.
"In a matter of minutes a drive can become accessible through any Internet connected computer, as well as through an innovative iPhone application", says Seagate.
The FreeAgent DockStar network adapter is available now for $99.99 (?60). The Pogoplug service for remote access and sharing, is free for a year, then $29.99 per year afterwards.

Hope you weren't too attached to the idea of "medium to large" sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the company's slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs. Providing some competition for Sharp's DX series, Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off of its REAL Series LCD HDTVs, including a set with built-in hard drives and Blu-ray recorders, plus a few more that lack the recording, but throw in super resolution upconversion that claims to make even the worst SD look better than ever. Even if that's just hype, we hope it fares better than the company's ill-fated 120Hz processing. The 37- (1080p) and 32-inch (720p) BHR300 models feature their disc drives in the stand, rather than back-mounted approach of the AQUOS, plus 320GB HDDs, SDHC slot, plus i.LINK and USB connectors that let owners edit video from a camcorder on the TV before saving to disc or hard drive. The MZW300 models are all 1080p, in 40-, 42- and 52-inch sizes, with Diamond Engine Pro IV HD super resolution tech, the latest and most power efficient Diamond panel with 20,000:1 contrast ratio, built in 5.1 Dolby Digital decoder, virtual surround speakers and a talking program guide feature. | The latest batch of televisions in the CR TV lab includes the new 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD. While many of us are gearing up for summer vacations, CR’s TV engineers are still hard at work testing more LCD and plasma TVs. Among this latest group are models with full-array LED backlights, and several 240Hz sets that take aim at reducing motion blur. We’re also looking at some new Toshiba models that will be the first to include Dolby Volume, a volume-leveling technology that attempts to minimize differences in loudness when you switch channels or when commercials come on. Here are the models currently being tested in our TV labs: LCD TVs Hitachi L26D103: This 26-inch 720p (1366x768) set is a TV/DVD combo with an integrated standard DVD player, headphone jack, and a built-in sleep timer. Hitachi L32A403: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set from Hitachi has four HDMI inputs, and comes with a swivel stand. JVC LT-46J300: This 46-inch 1080p LCD from JVC has the company’s TeleDock integrated iPod dock. LG 55LH90: This 55-inch 1080p LCD TV from LG is a high-featured model that has full-array LED backlights with local dimming, and the company’s TruMotion 240Hz technology, which combines a 120Hz refresh rate with a scanning backlight. It’s also a THX-certified set. Oddly for a higher-priced set, it doesn’t include access to LG’s NetCast Internet service. Magnavox 42MF439B/F7: Earlier this year Philips handed over the manufacturing and marketing of its Philips- and Magnavox-brand TVs in the U.S. to Funai, which also controls the Sylvania brand. This Magnavox, among the first TVs we've seen as part of the deal, is a lower-priced 42-inch 1080p LCD model that can play back digital photos and music stored on a USB flash drive. Philips 32PFL3504D: This 32-inch 720p (1366x768) set, available at mass merchants, warehouse clubs, regional dealers, and online retailers, is fairly low-priced for a major brand and includes a set-up assistant that uses an onscreen wizard to personalize settings. RCA L46FHD37R: A lower-cost 46-inch 1080p LCD, sold at Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Clubs, and other retailers, that include a light sensor that automatically adjusts contrast to room light conditions. Samsung LN52B750: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Samsung has new Touch of Color cosmetics (charcoal gray) and the company's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology that actually quadruples the TV’s frame rate. It also includes the company’s [email protected] Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access online content, which will soon include instant movies from Blockbuster. Also comes with some preloaded content, such as recipes and games. It can wirelessly connect to a home network via an optional USB wireless dongle. Sharp Aquos LC-52E77UN: This 52-inch 1080p LCD from Sharp features a new design, 120Hz technology and has five HDMI inputs, the most we’ve seen. Sharp Aquos LC-C4067UN: This value-priced Aquos is a 40-inch 1080p LCD sold via the warehouse clubs.
