 | NEWS: Panasonic shows off Full HD 3D by plasma (Pocket-lint, 9/03/2009 12:14pm) |
IFA 2009: Panasonic claims close collaboration with Hollywood standard
Panasonic has announced its version of how Full HD 3DTV viewing should be done as demoed on the company's 103-inch mega-plasma in the press conference at IFA 2009 today.
Unlike Sony's 3D Bravia LCD solution, Panasonic believes that a far better quality experience can be achieved through PDP plasma technology which is touted to offer a less blurry image and a far crisper feel. The system will be 3D through Blu-ray and the set will transmit a true, 1080p image on two channels - one to each eye - thus ensuring a Full HD 3D result when it's put together in the viewer's brain.
Although, neither the film industry nor the broadcasters have as yet to decide on the standard of 3D which the tech companies are to support, Panasonic has claimed that it has been working closely with Hollywood to lead the way in consumer 3D and even got Avatar's producer, Jon Landau, up on stage to prove.
No official 3D products were announced but the company is showing clear intent.

Yet another player that doesn't just let you play Blu-ray
Owners of any of the 2009 Panasonic Blu-ray players launched earlier in the year will now be able to get more than just Blu-ray on their TV following a deal between the TV maker and Amazon.
According to Panasonic Current owners of Panasonic's 2009 Blu-ray Disc players will automatically received a free software update on Tuesday in the US to be able to access Amazon's Video On Demand service.
The players, which were launched in April, will be able to access some 45,000 titles, a 1000 of which are in HD, to download directly to the player to watch from Amazon's on demand service.
Models to get the software update include the DMP-BD60, BD70V, BD80 and the company's portable Blu-ray Disc player, the B15.
In addition to Amazon Video On Demand, VIERA CAST will continue to provide access to YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Bloomberg News and weather information says Panasonic.
It is not certain whether or not UK customers will be getting a similar update.

 | New Ratings: Blu-ray players now on CRO (Consumer Reports, 8/05/2009 3:30pm) |
| We’ve just posted our latest high-def Blu-ray Ratings (available to subscribers), and we’re happy to report that almost all the models tested can provide excellent HD and DVD picture quality. In fact, all the models in our Ratings offered excellent high-definition performance, though we did see some differences in how well players handled upconverted film-based programs from standard DVDs. In addition to models from familiar brands, such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony (whose products we’ve previously reviewed), our latest Ratings include the first Blu-ray players from JVC, Sherwood, and Oppo (pictured), a smaller company whose upconverting DVD players earned strong word-of-mouth among the A/V enthusiast community. Check our Ratings to see how well these newcomers did compared to second- and third-generation models from other brands. With satisfying HD picture quality now almost a given, it’s primarily features that differentiate one player from another. For example, while almost all the new models in our Ratings are BD-Live (or BD-Live-ready) players—meaning they can connect to the Internet to access extra content, such as outtakes, additional directors', or actors' commentaries, or even video games, from a movie studio’s servers—some older models lack this feature. All the players in our test have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while the movie is playing. We’re also seeing more Internet-connected players that can now directly access instantly streaming movies from services such as Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand, or music from streaming Internet radio services such as Pandora. Some models offer wireless access to a home network so you don’t need to have a wired Ethernet jack near the player. Although we have seen Blu-ray prices fall since our last test, the addition of these new features has tempered the types of price drops we initially envisioned. As a result, you can still expect to pay $350 to $500 for a top-rated, BD-Live model from a major brand. A less expensive option is to choose a “BD-Live-ready†model; prices typically start at about $250. These players come with an Ethernet connection, but require you to purchase additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) to activate the BD-Live feature. But if you can live without BD-Live, you can save money by choosing one of the BonusView-only players, which typically sell for $200 or less. But we do anticipate prices dropping this fall, even on full-featured models from major brands, as manufacturing efficiencies come into play and brands compete for market share. We’ll be tracking Blu-ray prices over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period, when rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. Also, we recently changed our Blu-ray testing protocol, adding scores for Blu-ray disc load times and remote control operations. With so many players offering excellent picture quality, we’ll continue to adapt our Ratings to include new features or attributes that will help buyers differentiate among the choices.—James... | Denon Announces Less Expensive Flagship Blu-ray Disc Player (About.com, 9/26/2009 8:00am) |
|
Although Denon introduced their flagship $4,500 DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray Disc player just this past January at CES, they have just announced a new "flagship quality" Blu-ray Disc player for less than half the price (which is still $1,999).
Just as with the DVD-A1UDC1, the new DBP-4010UDCI meets Profile 2.0 specifications with the required Ethernet port as well as a slot for memory expansion and audio, video, still image file playback via SD card. This player is also playback compatible with Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, but DVD-Audio Discs and SACDs. Also, another welcome feature for audiophiles has a separate 2 channel/7.1 channel analog audio outputs and bass management control, and, for videophiles, the DBP-4010UDCI offers vertical stretch, so that films with 2:35 aspect ratio images can be properly displayed when using projectors with 2:35 aspect ratio lens attachments.
However, one important change from the previous DVD-A1UDCI is the switch from using the the Silicon Optix Realta Chip for DVD upscaling, to the use of the Anchor Bay VRS ABT-2010 Chip for that purpose.
Also, for custom installers, the DBP-4010UDCI is fully equipped with both RS-232 and Wired remote in/out connectors.
For complete details, check out the Official Denon Announcement, along with the DBP-4010UDCI Specification Sheet and User Manual. Photos (c) Denon USA - Click on photos for larger view. (Read Full Article) |

 | Eyes-on Panasonic's Full HD 3D plasma and Blu-ray combo (Engadget, 9/03/2009 11:17am) |
We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic's upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best "consumer" 3D we've seen -- almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn't much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago, and the only word we have on release at the moment is "next year." Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it's ready for a disc release -- we've certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially "shallow" on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we've yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic's presentation was more an opportunity to be "blown away" by the company's awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below. Gallery: Eyes-on Panasonic's Full HD 3D plasma and Blu-ray comboFiled under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentEyes-on Panasonic's Full HD 3D plasma and Blu-ray combo originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 06:17:00 EST. | Panasonic in-dash HD nav system & Blu-ray player ready to ship, are you ready for the price? (Engadget, 8/20/2009 2:01pm) |
Don't think you can sell the kids short anymore, keeping the Blu-ray copy at home and taking DVD rips on the road, now that Panasonic is ready to deliver its in-dash Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD screen packing nav unit in September. We got a good peek at these back in April and the specs haven't changed, with the Profile 1.1 Bonus View compatible CY-BB1000D taking care of Blu-ray duties and featuring the same UniPhier guts as the company's line of living room Blu-ray players. The CN-HX3000D is a WXGA 1280x720p 7-inch LED backlit widescreen display ready to play back media via standard HDMI, iPod connector, SD card or its digital TV tuner, powered by Windows Automotive with navigation duties assisted by Google Maps and Yahoo! Japan. The CY-BB1000D is ¥99,750 ($1,057) and the CN-HX3000D is ¥365,400 ($3,872), and both arrive September 10 in Japan. We'll let you decide if around 5 grand is a good price for the in car HD experience (might want to look at custom mounting a DMP-B15, $800 and you can take it with you.)

 | HDGuru finds the new 'King of HDTVs' (DVICE, 7/27/2009 5:14pm) |
| Football season is coming up, and we don't want to be caught short with a second-rate HDTV. Trusted HDGuru Gary Merson says the Panasonic TC-P54V10, a 54-inch plasma 1080p set, is "the new king of HDTVs." In his eyes-on review, he lauds the THX-anointed plasma panel's excellent image brightness, low energy consumption, deep black levels, judder-free film reproduction, and impressive "pop."
Judging from his impeccable credibility in the past, if the HDGuru says this $2300 HDTV as the world's best, it probably is. He even says this is comparable or better in nearly every criteria than the revered (and unfortunately, discontinued) Pioneer Kuro plasma HDTVs. We want. Our advice? Wait until next month for the release of Panasonic's 65-inch version of this new "King of HDTVs."

 | Toshiba's first Blu-ray player hits in November (Consumer Reports, 9/03/2009 6:39pm) |
| Toshiba's BDX2000 Blu-ray player. (Click to enlarge) [PHOTO: Courtesy of Toshiba] If you can't beat 'em, join them. That's finally Toshiba's message as the company readies to roll out its first Blu-ray player, the BDX2000, this fall. The player will arrive in November, at a price of $250. The BDX200 is a BD-Live-ready player (you have to add 1GB of flash memory for the BD-Live Internet feature to work), and it includes an SD card slot for playing digital music, photos and video--including high-def AVCHD files—on your TV. The player has a "smoked mirrored" front panel, with a drop-down door that conceals the primary controls. When used with a Toshiba Regza TV, the player and TV can both be controlled from a single remote. From the announcement, it's unclear whether the layer internally decodes the high-resolution lossless audio formats—Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master Audio—internally, or sends it out via bitstream for decoding in a receiver. | Toshiba unveils Blu-ray player, price, specs (AfterDawn, 9/05/2009 2:32am) |
Via a press release today, Toshiba has put the final nail in HD DVD's coffin, unveiling their first Blu-ray player, the BDX2000.
The full specs read as follows:
* BD-Live(TM) (Profile 2.0)
* 1080p/ 24 fps Full HD Video Output
* AVCHD Playback
* Toshiba REGZA-LINK(R) (HDMI-CEC)
* Support for enhanced audio formats from Dolby(R) True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio | Essential(TM) Playback
* Bonus View
* SD Card Slot
* ENERGY STAR(R) Certified
"Toshiba is a technology leader in high definition products," says Jodi Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Digital A/V Group. "From listening to our consumers we know they demand access to full high definition content. With the introduction of our BDX2000 we are offering consumers what they want with a breath-taking HD viewing experience to meet the needs of today's home theater."
The REGZA-LINK, much like how Sony does with Bravia TVs, allows for users to connect a Regza HDTV to the Blu-ray player via HDMI, and then control both from one single remote controller. It's unclear what formats the player can read off the SD cards, but standard MP3, WMA, JPEG and AVI should not be a problem.
The player will hit stores in November and have $249.99 MSRP.

 | New Blu-ray player Ratings: Lower prices, more features (Consumer Reports, 10/09/2009 4:03pm) |
| In our largest test of Blu-ray players so far, we found that satisfying picture quality has become almost a given, while features and price vary considerably. You can pay as little as $160 for a recommended model or as much as $500, depending on the capabilities, bells and whistles you’re willing to pay for. Portability commands top dollar. The first portable Blu-ray player we’ve tested, the Panasonic DMP-B15, is priced at $700. Our latest Blu-ray player Ratings (available to subscribers) include 27 models that have a few features in common. All have BonusView, a picture-in-picture feature that lets you view additional content in a smaller window while a movie is playing, and all can upconvert standard DVDs to quasi-HD resolutions. Only a handful of the players, mostly priced at $300 and up, have BD-Live, a feature that allows the player to access directors’ commentaries, deleted scenes, games, and more from the movie studio’s servers. Other models are BD-Live-ready. These players, all priced at $200 and up, have the required Ethernet connection, but need additional memory (typically a 1GB USB flash drive, which costs $10 to $15) for the BD-Live feature to work. Another feature showing up on some of the higher-priced models is the ability to stream movies from online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand, or receive music streams from Internet radio stations such as Pandora. And more players now have USB ports or SD card slots, so you can play digital photos, music and even videos on your TV. One model, a Panasonic, has a built-in VHS player, a space-saving option for those who still watch tapes. Again, you’re not likely to find these features on the lowest-priced players. We expect prices to drop over the next several months, especially during November’s Black Friday shopping period. Rumors suggest we’ll see the first $100 model. So keep checking back here for updates. —James K. Willcox (Read Full Article) |
 | Tip of the Week: Be on the lookout for new HD channels (Consumer Reports, 7/23/2009 1:17pm) |
| [ Photo courtesy of Sanja Gjenero ] If you’re like me, you’re thrilled when a new high-def channel is added to your lineup. TV providers have been beefing up their HD offerings regularly over the last year or two, and many now offer dozens of stations. I get about 60 channels in HD, and if I subscribed to the premium channels, I’d get many more. My cable provider, Cablevision, recently added HD versions of USA and FX, so I can watch shows like Psych, Burn Notice, and Damages in all their high-def splendor. Sometimes I’ve stumbled across these new offerings by accident, while idly surfing with the channel up/down button on the remote. Though the discovery gladdens my heart, I can’t help but wonder how long I’ve been missing out, unknowingly settling for their standard-def counterparts. Cablevision does announce new HD offerings, but it’s usually in small type down the side of my monthly service bill, or in an occasional pamphlet listing the full channel line-up. But when I’m rushing to pay my bills, I don’t always read the fine print or flyers. Now, I make a point of doing so. I also check the onscreen program guide to see if any new channels have materialized in the high-def tier. And there's always the Web: Like most companies, Cablevision provides a full lineup of channels for my area on its Web site. If you’re not regularly searching out new HD options, I recommend you start doing so. You might be happily surprised by what you find. – Eileen McCooey (Read Full Article) |

 | Movie studios again demand HDTV disabling powers from FCC (Ars Technica, 9/02/2009 11:22am) |
Hollywood's bid to force a yet-to-be-agreed-upon number of households to buy new home theater gear is back in business. The Motion Picture Association of America has once again asked the Federal Communications Commission for the right to selectively control output streams to the TV entertainment systems of consumers. "The pro-consumer purpose" (!) request "is to enable movie studios to offer millions of Americans in-home access to high-value, high definition video content," three MPAA biggies explained during a meeting they held with seven FCC Media Bureau staffers last Thursday.
Consumer groups, electronics makers, pro-consumer bloggers, and consumers, it should be noted, think this idea is a very stinky dog. So did former FCC Chair Kevin Martin. But that does not seem to dissuade the MPAA, whose principals just can't seem to let the issue go. What's interesting about the group's latest filing, however, is that it effectively concedes that the output changes it wants could, in fact, hobble some home video systems.

 | Mitsubishi Announces Super-Charged Blu-ray Disc Recorders....For Japan (About.com, 8/22/2009 10:00am) |
| Here we go again! Another announcement by a large Asian consumer electronics manufacturer that it is introducing a new line of Blu-ray Disc recorders, but, unfortunately, they will probably never see the light-of-day in the U.S.
What makes Mitsubishi's announcement even more frustrating is that these units are a home theater fan's dream: One unit combines Blu-ray Disc recording with a 1 Terabyte Hard Drive, a second unit offers a 500GB hard drive, while the third houses not only a Blu-ray Disc recorder and a 320 GB hard drive, but also includes a VHS deck. Of course, all these units can record in all the standard DVD recording format as well, and it also appears that they all have USB and SD Card slots for accessing additional digital content. For details, check out the brief report from Akihabara News as well as the Official Announcement and Product Specifications from Mitsubishi (in Japanese with some technical terms in English).
To add more insult to injury, Mitsubishi has also announced a line of LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray Disc/Hard Drive combos (See report from Tech-On!.
Blu-ray Disc recorders have been available in Japan for about two years, and not as much as a word about U.S. availability. What happened to the U.S. as the primary market for the latest in consumer electronics technology - especially when it comes to video recording? | Does the Samsung Instinct HD really shoot HD video? (Consumer Reports, 10/08/2009 7:02pm) |
| The Samsung Instinct HD. [PHOTO courtesy of Samsung] The Samsung Instinct HD, available from Sprint for $250 with a two-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate, is the first cell phone we've seen that claims to make high-definition video recordings. It also boasts a 5-megapixel still camera with flash. That camera is a step up from the flashless, 2-megapixel camera found on previous Instincts, also from Sprint, including the S30 version now in our Ratings, available to subscribers. We’re evaluating the Instinct HD now, and will post full test results on it to our Ratings later this month. Meantime, our initial results on its imaging are promising, albeit with a few quibbles. The new Instinct’s camera is easy to access, thanks to a dedicated camera button, conveniently located on the lower right side of the phone. Pushing the button activates the camera’s still mode. Tapping a camera icon on the upper left of the largish (1.78 x 2.66 in.) display switches the camera to video mode. Tapping again summons controls for auto-focus, exposure, and other camera functions. The Instinct HD claims it can record video resolution of 1280 x 720p, which is a true HD format—although, as we often point out, HD format alone does not assure images of pristine, high-definition quality. To assess quality, we shot a series of videos on the Instinct and hooked it up to a 50-inch Panasonic plasma television using the optional ($30) HDMI cable. Our findings: Color was good in the MPEG4 videos, though they lacked fine detail and texture. They blurred even more when we panned the camera to the left or right. Unfortunately, accessing the card is a pain. You have to open the phone's back cover and remove the battery, which shuts off the phone. And the still-image performance of the Instinct? Pictures were sharp and well-defined, with good color overall on the TV screen, though shots taken in low light still looked dark—even with the flash. Camera controls were fairly responsive for a phone, with an acceptable next-shot delay. Our photo engineers are currently giving the Instinct HD's... (Read Full Article) |
