DOD STATEMENT ON HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION STANDARDS


00000The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence has issued the following statement to clarify misimpressions of the Department of Defense;s position on commercial standards for high-definition television and reception:

00000"The Department of Defense met on Jan. 13, 2000 with a group of consumer electronics, manufacturers, broadcasters and others, all proponents of the 8VSB RF transmission standard. This discussion centered on the unique needs of the U.S. Military regarding digital television transmission and reception.

00000"The Department of Defense has no desire to revisit the 8VSB RF transmission standard. adopted by the Federal Communications Commission.

00000"The department of Defense looks forward to continuing the work with all relevant parties to insure that the unique needs of the military are considered as the U.S.digital television transition continue and as the consumer electronics and broadcast industries develop new technologies. DoD desires to meet its needs through commercial products to the greatest possible extent."
