Dear HDTV Readers,

I have been interviewing over the last few days some of the HDTV leaders from broadcasting, manufacturing, trade associations, and the manufacturers. I have yet to transcribe them.

From the interviews I feel that we are in good hands. We can give the industry a hand without fear of it being bitten off as long as we know HDTV is a positive event coming for the world. It looks to me like HDTV is a starting pointing for moving us forward as a people. We seem to love HD, even as rapscallion as it can get on occasion, and it is only going to get better with time.

The consensus from those I interviewed is that we are going to see HDTV become a phenonimal success. This is the promise I see for HDTV--a cultural good that won't be stopped--a force put together by men and women for the betterment of their times.

I still have  Alex Wallau, president of ABC scheduled (he had to cancel today due to some respiratory ailment). Dick Wiley, the Chairman of the FCC Advisory Committee who put all of the pieces of it together is due to talk to us on the 13th. Dick was former Chairman of the FCC and has impeccable credentials.  You always feel better about yourself after a few moments with Dick Wiley. Dick, we appreciate what you did for us. Thank you!

Another interview in the can and not yet transcribed is with Mark Richer, Chairman of the ATSC. We get the inside look at what it going on with this cross industry standards organization..

Don't miss the interview with Hal Protter from TheWB. Hal has grown into a highly sophisticated supporter of HDTV and joined TheWB to position himself to do HDTV some good, and he has. I have known Hal for nearly 20 years back when he was president of the Independent Broadcasters Association. I recall him giving a warning speech at their Century City convention in 1988 when he said that everyone better wake up because HDTV is so attractive when boat loads of HDTVs show up on our shores anyone who can not feed a signal in them will be lost. Congratulations Hal on what you have achieved in the HDTV world.

Another Interview in the can is with David Arland from Thomson Multimedia. That is RCA brand. I don't know David very well. We have talked on the phone several times and I find his views are very much down the middle. You can interview all of the other companies and you hear exactly what David has said. He also is a salesman and never misses an opportunity to promote RCA's latest products...and why not? We want to know about PVRs and new models of HDTV.

I think Joe Kane should be a brand name. His mission in life is to educate the US population about picture quality. Joe has followed the rules in making good pictures. He said in talks today that the Samsung $10k front DLP projector is staggeringly good.

Best Buy's VP Bill Cody talked with me Wednesday. The retail end is the one that needs the most improvement. There are structural problems with their high turn over but they are consciously doing things to make HDTV work.

Marty Franks wants to hold off for a week until all of the deals for next season are inked and he can be more forthright in telling what CBS is doing for us. I always look forward to talking to the highly skilled Mr. Franks.

These are just some of the interviews that will be coming to you as they are transcribed.

Dale
