Issue #11                                                                                                                                     June 17, 2004

Major League Soccer on HDNet

This last week ABC did a fine job bringing us HD coverage of the NBA Finals. I have to hand it to the NBA #1 Detroit Pistons--they dominated with Defense, then made the shots they had to.

TW in HDSports is seeing a shift in the type of HD Sports events coming. Big three networks are coming-up short; some will like it, others may have a let down. No more NBA or NHL, plus, and I hope I am wrong, NBC it seems is deifying logic with their Standard Definition (ugh) US Open PGA Golf event, NO it is NOT coming in HD. Considering their great horse racing events of late, it’s a shame.

These long days ending spring bring MLBaseball games to your HD WideScreens, plus good college ESPN-HD World Series Baseball along with 3 MLSoccer matches to round it out.

HDNet Sports, has plenty of HD AutoRacing this week. Revving up on Friday night, exciting Nascar short track action from Connecticut! Sat & Sun HDNet has Bridgestone Champ Cars and Trans-Am Series roaring in from Portland International Raceway, OR. HDNet has other HD sports not ‘Live’, Link: http://www.hd.net/op_sports.html

FoxSportsNet Minnesota travels to Boston next week for three MLB games. One of these games also being shown on INHD.

Ed. note: last week I didn’t list CBS LPGA HD Golf. Good job CBS Sports to bring on the Ladies Golf, and I wished I’d watched it!. More HDSports notes & news are at the bottom of the column.

Pass this along to your sports fan friends

HDSports News/Notes

Last week the NBC Olympic Link did work properly so here we go again! NBC Olympics, from their press release: NBC's separate, unique HDTV coverage on NBC's digital affiliates, presented by Sony Electronics Inc., will provide HDTV coverage on delay of six sports from the only main Olympic venues provided in high definition by the Olympic host broadcaster. Those sports include swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, medal rounds of basketball and the men's soccer gold medal final. The HDTV coverage will total 399 hours and is a completely different production from the standard definition broadcast on the network. NBC has 124 HDTV affiliates with the potential to cover 86 percent of the country. Links below:

2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Broadcast Schedule (June-July) The most in-depth Olympic broadcast in history is coming August 11-29 to the NBC Universal networks (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Bravo, Telemundo, NBC HDTV).

Snips from CBS Sports release (Ed: maybe HD is helping):
CBS's coverage of the PGA TOUR averaged a 2.7/7 national rating/share, up +17% from the same period last year (2.3/6). …….
Final-round coverage of Sunday's Memorial Tournament on CBS scored a 3.6/9 national rating/share, up 16% from last year's 3.1/8, and was the highest-rated final round Memorial since 2001's 5.0/13.
