Let's catch up on some reader mail........
Dale,
Good work on a great magazine!
I would like to know if any other subscribers of HDTV Magazine ever have audio sync
problems with DirecTV Showtime HD (channel 543). I have replaced both my HD receiver and
dish and still have this problem. This is the only channel that I have trouble
with.......very annoying. If you can post my note on your "reader mail" section
I would really appreciate it. Also please include my e-mail address: [email protected]
Thanks,
Randy Spruill
Readers! Can you answer Randy and get us all in synch?
_Dale
Hi Dale,
It's been a while since I chimed in, but wanted you to know I still use the magazine as a
valuable resource and way to show others how much is going on in HDTV.
I missed yesterday's question(I'm replying to this old email to get around the HTML in a
reply. The HTML version of the mag looks incredible~!) I was shocked last evening when I
found out I could get Comcast HD in my area. I'm just back from the NCTA show in Chicago
where much was made of Comcast's rollouts of both HD and PVR products.
My area of San Francisco has been notoriously low-tech. Just read cable Tv magazines a
while and you'll see how badly the entirety of the number 5 TV market needs a cable TV
upgrade. From San Jose to Oakland to San Francisco, most can't receive advanced cable
services like HD and cable modem. With only 42-47% of the area upgraded to a modern cable
bandwidth(above 500Mhz), I have so far lived in the other 53-58%. All that changed last
night.
Comcast came in and claimed to have plans to make the Bay area it's number 1 priority. The
paper ran articles, Comcast started an all-out blitz in TV commercials, and suddenly you
could see Comcast everywhere-even coming out of an underground public transportation
tunnel to see a large banner saying "We're glad to be the Bay Area's new cable
company."
Many were skeptical, of course. AT&T made similar claims when it bought TCI.
Even at my near-suburb neighborhood of Twin Peaks right at the base of Sutro
Tower(everyone wishes they had my OTA reception!), I am now able to get HD and high speed
Internet. I probably shouldn't count my chickens before they're hatched, because the
installer is coming out tomorrow, but I was very excited about this as I've waited the
last few years for this to happen. I can't even get DSL service because the nearest
distribution point is too far away when I'm only a mile from some of the best known areas
in San Francisco, like "The Haight." Working at Dolby as an engineer in
broadcast has given me high expectations for digital television and HDTV. Comcast is
offering ABC, NBC(which I haven't been able to get for over a year because the local
station got rid of it's network affiliation), KQED(our local PBS), Showtime, and HBO. I
already subscribe to Showtime and plan to subscribe to HBO.
Thanks for the support you give our audio system, Dolby Digital. We are proud to be the
preferred and chosen sound system in all HD entertainment. We know our high definition
audio system is the perfect complement to the best in high definition video.
Best Regards
Oren Williams. Dolby
Good afternoon to all.
This past Tuesday, I was en route to speak at the SUNY Technology Officers Association
annual meeting in Kerhokson, NY. Having some free time on my hands (and good weather, a
rarity here lately) , I convinced the folks at Plasmaco in Highlands, NY (just east of New
Paltz) to see if any 8VSB broadcasts could be picked up at their location.
They thought not. However, I usually don't give up that easily.
We went up on their roof (about 25 feet above ground level) with 10' of mast, a Samsung
150 set-top receiver, and a modified Channel Master 4308 suburban UHF yagi (seen on my web
site at www.hdtvexpert.com). I also brought along a Channel Master #7775 UHF preamp, plus
two spectrum analyzers.
Someone dragged up an old video monitor from the plant, and we began testing. In short
order, we found WTBY-27 (the local Trinity Broadcasting station in Poughkeepsie, who was
testing with 50 watts on a tower about 5 miles away, and who then had a power failure 30
minutes later). No big deal.
What was neat was picking up and locking in on WCDC-36, the Adams, MA repeater/satellite
station for WTEN in Albany, NY. WCDC locked up the tuner after carefully aiming the
antenna. What we didn't know was that (1) WCDC was running low power from Mt. Grelock in
western Massachusetts, and (2) the LOS path from the Plasmaco roof to Mt. Greylock is
conservatively 78-80 miles. That's a pretty good catch, and an NTSC signal at that range
would be very marginal at best.
I repeated the test later that evening from the rear deck of my brother's house in
Saugerties, NY. He lives on the wrong side of a hill from the WCDC site and is somewhat
obstructed by terrain, with heavy foliage around him. Even with all that, plus the antenna
sitting just 10' above his deck AND a 55 mile path to Greylock, we were able to lock up
WCDC-36 again with little effort. Nice strong waveform runnnig low power.
I should add that there were no enhanced weather conditions, such as those that might form
a tropospheric "duct". The weather was warm, stable winds, no close-by incoming
fronts. Typically, ducts form when there are inversions and that usually results in some
instability of the received signal as the front moves through. But it was clear, and warm.
I wish more folks could see demos like this as they are positive indicators of the
benefits of a "threshold" DTV system as opposed to an "amplitude"
system. Hopefully, more affiliates will start coming on-air in this area soon.
Best,
Pete Putman Roam Consulting Inc.
Thanks Dale for the supplement,
I was particularly interested on the threads that referred to the Star Wars on the
AVSforum.
I do not participate in forums anymore and was surprised of the long thread that reported
exactly what was my experience with the low quality DirecTV's HD HBO movie just a week ago
on the opening night.
A large number of people coincided with my comments and identified the same macro blocking
and pixelation artifacts and the blurry/film grain appearance chosen by George Lucas even
when the camera/media was 1080p HD.
In my second test, a week later, which I reported on a recent email to the Tips, I felt
compelled to tell that the image was much better and much lesser artifacts, I was
surprised myself of the improvement.
I mentioned that there was one variable that was different between the two tests, the time
of the show (the second show was after midnight), and I assumed that DirecTV distributed
the load on the transponder in a way to favor HBO that late at night.
On the last page (17) of the AVS thread viewers started saying that they experienced the
same improvement that I noticed, and then the thread ended.
After reading the entire thread I reached to another conclusion. DirecTV has received so
many complaints, as it can be seen on 17 pages of unhappy viewers, that they were forced
to rearrange quick the compression or bandwidth allocation in a way that at least HD-HBO
showed better, after a week.
This conclusion seems more logical than the late at night improvement theory, but I must
say that it is not the first time that I notice that late content shows better, although I
think this time was DirecTV's reaction to so many complaints.
This put us back into two things that I mentioned at the end of my second test (the
better) email:
--------- "This is good news, this means that decent quality can be obtained if
proper attention is given.
The bad news is that quantity has the potential to destroy the HD experience, and more HD
channels are coming, hopefully not of the quantity oriented compressed channels, like the
effect experienced by HBO at 8 PM on the first test." ---------
When I said "proper attention" I meant the reaction of DirecTV to make things
right for the HD quality oriented community.
Regarding the "bad news", unfortunately many people have already switched away
from the DirecTV offering of more HD channels, produced by this unfortunate event of lack
of proper care by the service provider, this was not good for DirecTV.
I personally made my mind in 2002 that I will be testing the waters and perhaps switch as
soon as the E* 921 is out and the superdish appears (and I have a large number of dishes
and STBs to replace), but who knows, perhaps even E* is not doing their best for quality
either, judging by many of the viewers (Ronald Cole of our tips list among them), and
cable is not alone either regarding compression games. 1394 and PVR is one main driver of
that possible switch, but DirecTV is pushing everyone away anyway with events like this.
Ironically most of the satellite customers ran away from poor-quality-cable in the 90s,
and now the market might be facing the opposite situation motivated by the FCC/industry
agreement of QAM tuners with POD into DTV sets, which might give to those interested the
opportunity to run away to see if there are less digital artifacts around the corner,
maybe there will be no place to run.
The bottom line is this.
We are starting to get the first signs of how the market of HD service providers reacts to
the business model of larger number of HD content, and so far it has not been promising
for viewers searching for quality.
And the trend might deteriorate as these companies prepare their infrastructure to deal
with the larger model and try to use their already tired SD concept of more is better and
compress.
Even OTA in DC has several broadcasters that use the 6MHz slot for 4 sub channels, one of
the 4 subs calls itself HD, one is no other that our National Public Television (PBS)
channel (if Dad does it why not the kids, promising isn't it?). That sub HD might be
receiving around 6-8 Mbps when it needs 19, so soon not even the flower still shots will
be rid of pixelation.
Everyone is doing it, this evolution to the wrong direction of quantity by sacrificing
quality must stop, and we should start working on it, before is too late.
If this trend is left as loose as it is, no matter which service you might switch to there
will be over compression, reduced bandwidth, transponder sharing, Mbps limitation
atrocities, before the technology is ready for that. At that time we all loose. Except for
our friend Jordan and his C-band UFO.
I believe that this Star Wars event was a strong wake up call for everyone, and we must
capitalize from it while is hot, and help the industry capitalize from this horrible
experience, we must use this event to brake the machinery of this inertia, so HDTV will
continue its path with quality as a driven force.
Best Regards,
Rodolfo La Maestra, VA
I have contacted both DirecTV and Lucasfilms to give us their joint
accounting of what you saw. Bob Plummer at DirecTV now has to go through the PR department
and is awaiting their approval before contacting us. LucasFilm is overdue. Donde

Regarding
recent sales figures sent out by CEA...
Movement not helped by...
The real figures missing are the number of set top boxes sold with these TVs .
All those people watching their Widescreen Hi-def capable sets to view DVDs is not helping
the High Definition movement . What about a breakdown of the number of sets which would
actually provide acceptable 1080i or 720p resolution as in at least 1280 x 720. Anything
below 1024 x 768 should not be counted in any hi-def sales figures. The sales for 480p
units is only good for Fox marketing department.
As Joe Kane has said , "there is too much emphasis on price and too little on
performance." Personally, a decent display and 5.1 DTS equipped surround system
starts at $7500 us.
TO finish with your own statemen: HDTV is the Aristocrat of TV.
Nicetry@
(from a second email) This is some more stats to
consider for your story on CEA recent sales reports.
There are approx 5.8 million HD capable sets out there.
- Less than 1 million of them have set top boxes connected to receive the HD signal.
- Less than 6 % of digital set owners have purchased antennae for OTA reception .
Currently only 20 % of nations digital broadcast are carried by cable
These findings are from the Forrester Research group and are the kind that Gary Shairo
should be concerned with .
Nicetry@
Dale,
Wonderful to see more and more HDTV programming! Wonderful to see DirecTV
offering more HDTV programming! But.........I subscribe to Comcast cable and Dish Network
just to get all 3 networks HD programming plus Discovery HD, PBS (although it's mostly
travelogues),HBO & SHO. So what do you hear from Dish? Are they going to keep up with
DirecTV? If so, when? Or what about Comcast? Will they add HDNet and ESPNHD?
I had a dream last night that I was connected to only one source for all my
programming.......and guess what? It was all HDTV!!!! Too bad I woke up!
