SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
Anna and the King

This exotic story of romance is set amidst the fabled beauty of Siam and is based on the real-life writings of Englishwoman Anna Leonowens. The lavish production garnered two Academy Award nominations — Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Costume Design — for its cinematographic beauty and presentation. Movie critic Walter Addiego, of the San Francisco Examiner, wrote: "Tennant, who made the fine Cinderella adaptation 'Ever After,' has an excellent feel for eye-catching, dreamy, fairy tale scenes. The sequences in the palace and aboard the royal barge are magnificent in a National Geographic style."

Jodie Foster portrays the widowed English schoolteacher who accepts a position in the court of the king of Siam (Chow) to teach the children, but finds there are lessons to be learned by everyone.

The 1999 release was directed by Andy Tennant. The screenplay was written by Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes, based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens.

This program carries a TV-14 parental guideline.
