AMISTAD
Amistad, the story of a shipboard revolt against slavery,
was nominated for four Academy Awards Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Anthony
Hopkins; Best Cinematography: Janusz Kaminski; Best Costume Design: Ruth E. Carter, and
Best Music, Original Dramatic Score: John Williams.
The drama is based on an 1839 incident which eventually pitted former President John
Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) against then President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne)
and threatened to bring the young nation to civil war. The human cargo nearly 50
men, women and children aboard a Spanish ship outbound from Cuba revolts and kills
all of the crew except two. Although the two surviving crewmen promise on their lives to
take the people to their homeland, the ship sails along the American coast until an
American naval ship discovers it and takes the revolters, lead by Cinque (Djimon Hounsou),
as prisoners for mutiny and murder.
Three-time Oscar nominee Morgan Freeman stars as a former slave and ardent abolitionist
who along with another abolitionist (Stellan Skarsgård) comes to the aid of
the prisoners by hiring an attorney (Matthew McConaughey). The 11-year-old Queen of Spain
is among those claiming custody of the "cargo." As the various factions battle,
the plight of the prisoners is revealed including the deadly "Middle
Passage" of slaves.
The 1997 release was directed by Steven Spielberg. The screenplay was written by Oscar
winner David Franzoni.

win. However, they encounter an obstacle when the former President of the United States
announces that he will be traveling to the country to make sure that the election is fair
and democratic and then appoints Haisley to accompany him.

"The Love Letter," a romantic comedy focusing on the passions ignited
in a bookstore by an unsigned letter, makes its network television premiere as a
presentation of "ABC Thursday Night at the Movies," JULY 3 (8:00-10:00 p.m.,
ET), on the ABC Television Network. The film features a stellar cast that includes Kate
Capshaw, Ellen DeGeneres, Gloria Stuart, Tom Selleck and Blythe Danner, and will be
presented in HDTV format with 5.1-channel surround sound.
In "The Love Letter," Helen (Kate Capshaw, "The Locusts"), a
40-something bookstore proprietor, finds an unsigned letter she believes was written to
her by Johnny (Tom Everett Scott, TV's "ER," "Attraction"), a handsome
and mild-mannered 20-year-old who works in the store. When Johnny encounters the letter,
he believes she wrote it to him. But Helen's good friend, Janet (Ellen DeGeneres, TV's
