SOUNDSTAGE
SOUNDSTAGE is back! The
critically acclaimed music series, which aired on PBS from 1974 to 1985, returns this
summer with 13 one-hour programs. The ever-popular Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers open
the season, which features some of todays chart-topping performers and hottest
groups, including Lyle Lovett, Alison Krauss, Chicago, Lucinda Williams, Michael McDonald,
Ashford and Simpson, and more. SOUNDSTAGE premieres on PBS Thursday, July 3, 2003, (check
local listings).
In the first of their two-part appearance on SOUNDSTAGE, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,
who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, perform old and new
material. In the second part, they perform the music from their latest CD, The Last DJ, in
entirety.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (7/3-10) Tom Petty and the
Heartbreakers are responsible for such infectious songs as American Girl,
Dont Do Me Like That, Freefallin and some of the most
critically acclaimed albums of all time, such as Damn the Torpedoes and Full Moon Fever.
Throughout the years, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have continued earning critical
praise and fan adoration for their trademark brand of straight-ahead, American rock
n roll and their refusal to compromise their integrity. Along the way, they
have become recognized as one of Americas great rock bands and were inducted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, their first year of eligibility. On
SOUNDSTAGEs premiere episode, Tom Petty and the band perform a wide variety of
material both new and old. This material, some of if never before performed live on
television, demonstrates the depth and quality of the work of Petty, one of Americas
best modern-day songwriters.
Alison Krauss + Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas (7/17) Alison
Krauss + Union Station are a remarkable collaboration of five stellar musicians, who
together have been instrumental in bringing bluegrass music to its now widely accepted and
popular commercial status. They come together on SOUNDSTAGE to perform a selection of
songs outlining their storied careers. Included are songs from the multi-platinum
soundtrack Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Other highlights during the hour include Baby,
Now That I Found You, The Lucky One, Maybe and the Grammy
Award-winning Man of Constant Sorrow.
Michael McDonald, Ashford and Simpson, Featuring Doobie Brothers, Tom
Johnston and Patrick Simmons (7/24) McDonald performs hits from his successful solo
career and is joined by Doobie Brothers, Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons, on such classic
Doobie Brother songs as What a Fool Believes, Blackwater,
Taking It to the Streets and others. Highlights of the evening include a
special appearance by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the imaginative
husband-and-wife songwriting team. Along with McDonald, they reprise some of their classic
hits, including Aint No Mountain High Enough. Other selections include
All in Love Is Fair, performed with orchestra, and additional songs from
McDonalds upcoming solo album, a tribute to the songs of Motown.

The original SOUNDSTAGE showcased artists who defined an era, including Bob Dylan, Al

Time Warner Cable will offer FSN games from Fox's 13 owned-and-operated
regional sports networks as part of the MSO's latest free HDTV offerings.
FSN will concentrate its efforts in markets it shares with Time Warner, including
Los Angeles; Minneapolis; Orlando, Fla.; Houston; and North Carolina.
FSN will produce the games locally in high definition, and they will be available at
no additional charge to subscribers."

New HD Package will Launch July 1 and Include ESPN
HD, Discovery HD TheaterTM, HDNet and HDNet Movies
El Segundo, CA Jun 3, 2003 DIRECTV, Inc., the nation's leading
digital multichannel television service provider, announced today that it will launch a
new high-definition (HD) programming package on July 1. The HD package will include ESPN
HD, Discovery HD TheaterTM, HDNet and HDNet Movies, and is available by
subscription for $10.99 per month.
In addition to ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theater, HDNet and HDNet Movies, DIRECTV will also
provide its customers with special events broadcast in HD, similar to events broadcast in
the past, such as USA's coverage of the Masters Tournament, NBA games and NBA TV
programming blocks.
