Krippendorf's Tribe

Richard Dreyfuss stars as a brilliant but desperate anthropologist who has recently led a failed trek to New Guinea. When an eager and passionate colleague, Veronica (Jenna Elfman), arrives at his door to remind him of his lecture to the college's faculty that night, desperation sets in because he has spent $100,000 in grant money and has nothing to show for it — and another colleague is set do prison time for misappropriating a grant.

Krippendorf improvises a lecture that leads him deeper into a jungle of trouble, as he describes his find of a 'lost tribe,' the "Shelmikedmu" — named for his kids, Shelly, Mike and Edmund. Pressed for evidence, he invents artifacts and promises "home" videos. Indeed it's at home in the back yard where he fakes scenes — including a memorable circumcision ritual — with the help of Veronica and his kids, and intercuts them with real footage from New Guinea. Meanwhile Krippendorf's rival, Ruth (Lily Tomlin), is determined to prove him a phony.

Todd Holland directed the 1998 film. The screenplay was written by Charlie Peters, based on the book by Frank Parkin.

This program carries a TV-14,D,S parental guideline.

Crown of the Continent - Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias

Filmmaker John Grabowska explores Alaska's visually spectacular Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, which includes the continent's largest assemblage of glaciers and greatest collection of peaks above 16,000 feet, along with dramatic valleys, wild rivers, and a variety of wildlife. For Grabowska, the trip is also a journey back to his own childhood, when his father brought the family to Alaska after being inspired by the writings of Jack London and the expeditions of Israel Russell.

Brooks plays himself, a producer who pitches a movie concept about filming a real American family for one year and editing it into a movie. Backed up by a team of psychologists and a respected institute dealing with human behavior, he promises not to let the cameras interfere in any way in their lives. But the problems begin on day one, and Brooks desperately tries to hold his project together. Obsessed with presenting what's "real," he is soon convinced that real life isn't exciting enough for film. Brooks mercilessly parodies the Hollywood persona in this sharp satire of the entertainment industry that presages such later films as EDTV and THE TRUMAN SHOW as well as the television shows THE REAL WORLD, BIG BROTHER, and SURVIVOR.
