King David
An adaptation of the biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars Richard Gere as
King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a shepherd boy, David is anointed
as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel (Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the
weakness of Saul (Edward Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the
Philistines to an end by defeating their champion, Goliath (George Eastman), in battle, he
is celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by Saul, whose
jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in battle, David assumes the
throne--but not without a sense that it is covered in blood. As time passes, he finds
himself in vicious battles with neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the
Israelites. Despite David's many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting
influence on the patriarch, and ultimately, even he is no longer favored by his God.

High-definition ESPN taking over
FOOTBALL SEASON got a whole lot more intimate for some cable
subscribers with Comcast and ESPN's announcement of a new station on its digital cable
package, ESPN HD. The new station will be a simulcast of ESPN, however, the broadcast of
sporting events will look different on the high-definition channel.
In high-definition television
race, satellite leads cable systems
By Peter Grant
WALL STREET JOURNAL
The battle between cable and
satellite companies to wire up America's televisions is moving into high definition.
Satellite has gained about 20 percent of the U.S.
market for pay TV, growing faster than many experts originally predicted. Now, it is
poised to boost its growth further thanks to the increasing number of consumers buying
high-definition sets, which promise much sharper pictures but need special signals to
reach their potential.
Fox Readies for HD
LOS ANGELES
Fox is taking the HD plunge. And to accommodate its new format, the Fox
Network Center in Los Angeles will undergo a build-out over the next year and the network
is in the market for 720p equipment from ingest to final satellite transmission, including
servers, videotape machines, format converters, distribution and routing, video
compression and Dolby Digital gear.
Fox hasn't yet made equipment selections, but Fox Engineering President
Andrew Setos said that there are plenty of options for equipment that can carry 720p.
"The marketplace now has a lot of competition in 720p-capable equipment and that's
good news for us," he said.

Soccer America
Technology is the star on broadcast of MLS games
into Anschutz theaters.
The glories of high-definition television - still, sadly, out of reach for most
of us - and its particular majesty for showing soccer, are being made available to the
common man (and woman) in a series of Major League Soccer broadcasts at big-screen
cinemas.
