THE NEW SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON
Based on the famed novel by Johann Wyss, the film is
the story of the Robinson family, Anna (Jane Seymour), Jack (James Keach) and their three
children, who set out to sail from Singapore to Sydney, Australia, on their boat, the
Albatross. Although the journey is an ambitious one, the family is prepared for whatever
hardships they may encounter.
In the dead of night on the fifth day of sailing, the Robinsons are attacked by pirates
led by the dashing and duplicitous Sheldon Blake (David Carradine) who have
secretly planted treasure in the hull of the Albatross. During the chase the Robinsons are
shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. They fend off the pirates and try to survive in
their new environment, eventually turning the jungle into a home. During the process they
find and adopt a young French girl who was stranded on the island 10 years earlier.
Their peaceful interlude is disrupted when Sheldon and his band of pirates return in
greater numbers, this time equipped with speed boats and jet skis. The Robinsons are
prepared and set in motion a plan to defend themselves against the intruders, using their
surroundings, their ingenuity and a few of their newfound animal friends.
The New Swiss Family Robinson was written and directed by Stewart Raffill.
This film carries a TV-PG,V parental guideline.

THE MASK OF ZORRO
Antonio Banderas stars as the initially reluctant young
protector of the people who inherits the aging Zorro's mantle and soon relishes his secret
identity as a hero in this sweeping romantic adventure of love, honor, tragedy and
triumph.
It has been 20 years since Don Diego de la Vega successfully fought Spanish oppression in
California as the legendary romantic hero Zorro. Imprisoned for two decades, he must now
find a successor to stop Don Rafael Montero -- the powerful former Spanish governor of
Alta, California, who cost him his freedom, his wife, Esperanza, and his daughter, Elena.
He chooses Alejandro Murieta, a bandit with a troubled past, and transforms him into the
new Zorro who, he hopes, will help him foil Montero's scheme to purchase California from
Mexico's president, General Santa Anna.
Tracing the heroic story of these highly charged relationships, the film follows the new
Zorro as he assumes de la Vega's mantle, enters into a romantic relationship with a woman
close to his predecessor's heart -- and "with the slash of a steel blade and the mark
of a 'Z,' defends the weak and exploited and avenges the wrongs committed against
them."

In his directorial debut Albert Brooks presents a hilarious account of what
happens to a typical American family when a group of filmmakers moves in
with them to record "real life." Brooks plays himself, a producer who
pitches a movie concept about filming a real American family for one year
and editing it into a movie. Backed up by a team of psychologists and a
respected institute dealing with human behavior, he promises not to let the
cameras interfere in any way in their lives. But the problems begin on day
one, and Brooks desperately tries to hold his project together. Obsessed
with presenting what's "real," he is soon convinced that real life isn't
exciting enough for film. Brooks mercilessly parodies the Hollywood persona
in this sharp satire of the entertainment industry that presages such later
films as EDTV and THE TRUMAN SHOW as well as the television shows THE REAL
WORLD, BIG BROTHER, and SURVIVOR.

KING DAVID

1:54
An adaptation of the biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars
Richard Gere as King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a
shepherd boy, David is anointed as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel
(Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the weakness of Saul (Edward
Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the Philistines to an
end by defeating their champion, Goliath (George Eastman), in battle, he is
celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by
Saul, whose jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in
battle, David assumes the throne--but not without a sense that it is covered
in blood. As time passes, he finds himself in vicious battles with
neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the Israelites. Despite David's
many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting influence on the

IN THE NEWS
Here are some HD-related stories from the
web:
Best
Known for Audio, Pioneer Plans TV Push
The next is not a new story but one worth re-reading and speculating
upon its value to the HDTV movement.
Device
could change cable
The old story where the hungry monkey gets an unrelenting grip on a banana
so it won't pass through the bars to be eaten may characterize one of the biggest stories
in television today. This is a story that hasn't seen a lot of ink but can't go away until
either embraced wholeheartedly or killed off by an unforeseen fatal flaw. Presuming no
fatal flaw this approach solves a painful problem for the broadcast transition as well as
the transition for cable. Cable urgently wants to finish their transition to digital
in order to expand their service and make each subscriber more valuable to their
enterprise. There is less cheering heard from the satellite folks. They see the PACE box
giving unfair advantage to cable by making the transition cheap, and so opening existing
capacity faster to an all-digital service with more capacity than they have. That could
make satellite a non-competitive player when it comes to the number of HDTV channels
offered in contrast to what cable can deliver.
How does one little $50 device enable all of that? Consider this: As it
stands the FCC has ruled that only after 85% of a given market is receiving and making use
of a digital signal from cable, satellite, or over-the-air can the analog frequencies of
the broadcasters be shut off and the spectrum returned to the FCC for reassignment.
While no broadcaster likes giving back spectrum it looks to be the better
deal in this case in order to stop the dual power bills. Let it be one or the other, they
say, but not both forever. Being in compliance with the FCC rule and still shutting off
the analog frequencies quickly is very important to broadcasters who shoulder the cost for
these two power bills. The digital channel is a dead weight as long as there are few
viewers. If every analog viewer could be quickly made into a digital user/viewer the best
of all worlds will have arrived..
What kind of equipment is needed to fulfill this 85% rule?
There is controversy over the answer to this question. It all boils down
to what fish you have to fry. Those who have no stake in a specific digital approach take
the broader interpretation saying that as long as you are receiving and using a digital
signal you count in this 85% rule and have fulfilled the FCC's intent.
Those who like this Pace box solution say any device that allows a home to
receive a digital signal and make use out of it is inclusive in this ruling.
All those with DirecTV or DISH have been converting a digital signal to an
analog one to run your analog sets. It's quite simple. While the box decodes the digital
signals from satellite it also converts that signal to analog.
Supposing everyone had a satellite box for an analog set. Would that count
towards fulfilling this 85% rule even though not being ATSC compliant? Those in
favor of this little Pace box (and others to follow) claim it does. It is
understandable that those with a vested interest in a specific signal configuration would
take umbrage.
Replace your satellite box in your mind for the PACE cable box in
every cable household and see what you get. The box does as the satellite box does in that
it converts digital signals to analog. A cable system with all of their subscribers using
one of more of these boxes could shut off their analog spectrum and convert those
frequencies to far more efficient digital uses--new revenue is the bottom line. That would
expand the cable capacity five fold or more and if it could be done at a minimum cost it
is clearly a win win.. More movies, more programs of special interest, MORE HDTV for the
consumers and an increased per sub value to build the value of the cable company's stock.
Does any digital that is converted or passed through satisfy the FCC 85%
rule? For those who say it does the next questions should be: Who is going to pay for
those little boxes: The public? The cable company? Those who want the broadcast analog
spectrum? The government?
We will discuss these questions in detail in coming days.
UNTIL TOMORROW
