ABC SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
SMALL SOLDIERS

Small Soldiers mixes fantasy, action, adventure and satire to produce a funny and action-packed story about toys like no others. When weapons-manufacturer-turned-toy-maker Gil Mars (Denis Leary) asks that his toys be able to do everything they do in the commercials. His motto, after all, is: "Bringing advanced battlefield technology into consumer products."

Kindly toy executive Irwin Wayfair (David Cross) creates toy aliens named Gorgonites (voiced by Frank Langella) and ruthless executive Larry Benson (Jay Mohr) creates a dreaded line of soldiers called Commando Elite. When a super secret microchip designed for the weapons industry is implanted, they go to war.

The 1998 film was directed by Joe Dante from the screenplay by Gavin Scott, Adam Rifkin and Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio.

This program carries a TV-PG,L,V parental guideline.

ANALYZE THIS

This comedy stars Robert De Niro as a crime boss who has lost his nerve and Billy Crystal as the psychiatrist who is unlucky enough to have him as a patient.

In the film, which won a 1999 American Comedy Award as Funniest Motion Picture, De Niro plays gangster Paul Vitti, whose sudden insecurity has seriously curtailed his ability to inflict harm, a definite liability in his line of work. Crystal portrays mild-mannered psychiatrist Ben Sobel, who is roped into treating this notorious patient who is accustomed to solving his problems with a gun.

Throughout the film, De Niro and Crystal find opportunities to poke fun at themselves and the types of roles with which they respectively became famous, and the mob scenes are satires of such films as "The Godfather."

Filmmaker John Grabowska explores Alaska's visually spectacular Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, which includes the continent's largest assemblage of glaciers and greatest collection of peaks above 16,000 feet, along with dramatic valleys, wild rivers, and a variety of wildlife. For Grabowska, the trip is also a journey back to his own childhood, when his father brought the family to Alaska after being inspired by the writings of Jack London and the expeditions of Israel Russell.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - As television shifts from the traditional analog signal to high-definition, one oft-heard comparison is that the move will be like the transition from black-and-white TV to color. Not so, says TV historian Tim Brooks. He says it's a much more difficult sale for the average consumer. Some HD sets are finally headed below the $1,000 barrier this Christmas, and consumer electronics manufacturers have high hopes. (more)
