ABC SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
The Pennsylvania Miners' Story

abcmovie.jpg (15194 bytes)
Told from the miners' own perspective, the film reveals new aspects to their extraordinary experience and, for the first time, takes viewers inside the mine (shot in real mines and stunningly recreated on a soundstage) to show the life-threatening dangers and physical limitations the men faced for 77 hours as they waited for rescue. The movie was shot in many of the actual locations in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, including scenes at the actual Quecreek mine.

Emmy-winning David Frankel directs from a script by Elwood Reid.

ABC's publishing arm, Hyperion, published the hardcover, Our Story: 77 Hours that Tested our Friendship and our Faith, written by the Quecreek miners as told to Jeff Goodell.

This program carries a TV-PG,L parental guideline.

IIN THE NEWS

The NBC Agency has partnered with Premier Retail Networks, creator of in-store media networks, on a high-definition television information campaign designed to educate consumers about the benefits of HDTV, the companies said.

The campaign, titled "This is HDTV," will begin running on Aug. 1. It includes four HD educational segments created and produced by PRN, the Consumer Electronics Association and The NBC Agency. Talent from NBC's programs including American Dreams' Tom Verica and Boomtown's Neal McDonough serve as hosts and share information about HDTV. The segments also include promos for the shows.

The idea for the campaign began with PRN, which supplies customized programming in analog and high-definition formats in Best Buy, Circuit City and Sears stores around the country. The segments will be broadcast on PRN's networks in those retail locations. Analog and HD versions of the segments will run alongside each other so that viewers can compare the differences in quality. The estimated campaign budget is $2 million.

"We are interested in supporting our retailers' efforts and enhancing consumer satisfaction by providing valuable information about HDTVs and HDTV programming," said Charlie Nooney, chief executive officer of San Francisco-based PRN, in a statement. "Noting a lack of consumer information on HDTV, we felt compelled to create a campaign that would bridge the HDTV educational gap."

Vince Manze, co-president of The NBC Agency in Burbank, Calif., said in a statement, "Not only did we feel we would be addressing a consumer need by educating viewers on how HDTV works, but we also embraced the opportunity to showcase the enhanced viewing experience of the NBC shows that are broadcast in HDTV."

Most of NBC's scripted TV programming is produced in the high-definition format, according to The NBC Agency.

CEA Expresses Strong Support Of Terry-Boucher DTV Bill

Cable Plug-and-Play and Broadcast Power Level Provisions will Speed Transition

Arlington, Va., July 23, 2003 - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) expressed strong support of the digital television (DTV) legislation introduced today in the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee by Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) and Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA).

The bill titled the "Consumer Access to Digital Television Enhancement Act of 2003," will accelerate the analog to DTV transition by promoting swift Federal Communications Commission (FCC) action on the "plug-and-play" agreement reached last year between the cable and consumer electronics industries.  FCC approval of the "plug-and-play" agreement will enable America's 70 million cable households to buy DTVs that connect directly to digital cable without a set-top box, and enjoy convenient access to HDTV offered by cable providers.

In a letter sent to Rep. Terry commending his DTV leadership, CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro wrote, "By supporting swift FCC action on the cable-consumer electronics compatibility agreement, your bill will help remove the final major obstacle to the ubiquitous deployment of DTV.  This voluntary industry agreement will establish technical, marketplace and regulatory certainty for the cable and CE industries, and allow for the national portability of digital cable products."

Shapiro also commended the bill's focus on requiring broadcasters to provide full power DTV broadcasts so that consumers relying on over-the-air DTV reception will have an effective and reliable signal.
