ABC SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
PAULIE
In Paulie, a Russian émigré janitor (Tony Shalhoub) discovers Paulie
(voiced by Jay Mohr and Buddy Hackett) hidden away in the basement of an animal research
lab. The two strike up a friendship and Paulie recounts the odyssey that has landed him in
the lab of an ambitious scientist (Bruce Davison). Paulie learned to talk while the pet of
a little girl named Marie (Hallie Kate Eisenberg) and it's his quest to be reunited with
her.
When Marie's father gets rid of Paulie, he lands in a pawn shop run by Buddy Hackett. He
learns to sing while there and is taken home by a kindly artist (two-time Oscar nominee
Gena Rowlands) who teaches him manners and how to fly. Paulie's next stop is in East L.A.,
where he becomes a backup singer in a taco-stand band fronted by the prettiest female
parrot in L.A. He is bird napped and is eventually forced into a life of crime
expertly looting ATM machines.
The 1998 release was directed by John Roberts. The feature was written by Laurie Craig.
This theatrical presentation carries a TV-G parental guideline.
