| It's official.Rupert Murdoch now owns 19.9
per cent--a controlling interest in DirecTV. For $6.6 billion he fulfills another step in
his long-standing ambition to girdle the globe with Fox programming. Mr. Murdoch was
once dissuaded from going into DBS in this country by one of his key American technical
advisors. He could have out-gunned both General Motors, the owners of DirecTV, and Charlie
Ergan (DISH) had he followed his first instincts. But he was advised that cable had
already blanketed the nation with a multichannel programming service and DBS would not be
important to this country likeit might in more "virgin" territories where cable
was little more than a string on a tin can. That same technical advisor is the one behind
Fox Wide--the pseudo HDTV service they have adopted on their Fox terrestrial channels.
While this engineer has done a good job in getting the most out of 480 line signal the
fact is never forgotten by HDTV owners that it is not HDTV. The big question being asked now is: Will this acquisition mean more or less HDTV program hours for those who subscribe to DirecTV? While it is difficult to have questions like this answered by the principals at this early stage I will do my best to get us an advanced view of their HDTV plans. __________________ The National Association of Broadcasters is having their annual convention this week in Las Vegas. Eddie Fritts, one of the highest paid lobbyist in Washington and one noted for his powerful influence in Congress, said in his opening speech that cable is not volunteering enough to carry the DTV stations, constituents of his who have now invested billions in upgrading to digital. He says cable will have to be forced by Congress to carry these digital signals alongside the old analog signals--dual must carry people call it. He holds out the lure that cable will in the end be glad they did because localism is the big value broadcasters deliver to and through the cable system. Of course, many stations are now in large group ownerships and have centralizing their operations often thousands of miles from their "local" tower. Their "local" programming and new is often not very local much of it managed half-a-continent away. The day when the local general manager was also a high profile member of the Elks club is fadding fast. The local touch is turning into the long distance make-it-sound local forumula touch. Cable recognizes that HDTV is a very good way to slow the churn rate in their digital tier offerings. That will help them in their own confounding transition from analog to all digital. The day they can shut down their analog services is the day they can really be a powerhouse in the HDTV world. Bandwidth--mostly a finite number in a cable system--will be freed for that. Cable sees that a local broadcaster today is just another competitive program supplier to be treated with no more or less respect than any other programmer. Broadcasters are still acting like they are in the old analog era and not only claim they have the right to demand must carry of both signals ("if government made me make the change they need to make cable carry that digital signal too"), but seek to lay a surcharge on cable for carrying them.Their justification is that they help cable reduce the churn rate by providing HDTV programming (since HDTV is only available in digital it alone can hold a subscriber to the digital tier. Just a digital representation of the old standard channels doesn't wind anyone's clock. Those channels can be found in analog or digital with little distinctions between them. It is this fact which causes so much churn. People don't find the value in paying extra for a digital tier just for the program guide and some on-demand movie packages. The on-demand is far from ubiquitous too. So, HDTV is the star digital attraction today. Broadcasters want to pay down their digital investments with fees from cable using this justification and calling now on the old time political clout. The president of the Cable association in Washington responds by asking why a cable company should pay for a signal that anyone with an antenna can receive for free? I would think legislation will not go very far but jaw boning often brings the same results. Will you, the public, demand that your cable company fill its limited digital capacity with what you can receive over-the-air or will you realize that if you can get those channels over-the-air the cable system has more room for other programmers, like ESPN, Discovery, HDnet, or that terrific HDTV channel you and I are going to create one day. _Dale Cripps

For the first time, the standard analog and HDTV productions of the 2003 Masters* Tournament will be unified and will provide 18-hole coverage in HDTV's highest definition format..
CBS Sports will utilize 42 high definition cameras and 10 hand-held 16x9 standard definition cameras. The unified productions will be produced in HDTV's highest definition format, 1080i, and downconverted for the CBS Television Network's analog broadcast. This production technique also produces a better quality analog picture. Whether watching in widescreen HD or traditional 4x3 analog, viewers hear the same golf announcers and see the same camera angles, replays and graphics.
The 2000 Masters was the first golf tournament presented live in HDTV on network television, and it is still the only major tournament broadcast in high definition.
CBS Sports will broadcast the 2003 Masters on the CBS Television HD Network on Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11 (4:00-6:30 PM, ET, each day) and Saturday, April 12 (3:30-6:30 PM, ET) and Sunday, April 13 (2:30-7:00 PM, ET) live from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The third and final rounds of the Masters will be broadcast simultaneously in standard definition by CBS Sports on the analog CBS Television Network.
The CBS Television Network will broadcast the Masters Tournament for the 48th consecutive year, the longest-running annual sports event presented on one network. In addition to the HD coverage, CBS Sports will broadcast live third-and final-round coverage on Saturday, April 12 (3:30-6:30 PM, ET) and Sunday, April 13 (2:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Highlights of early-round play will be presented by CBS Sports on Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11 (11:35-11:50 PM, ET, both nights).
