With only a tiny fanfare ABC kicked off their Monday Night Football pre-season
schedule treating a nation of sports fans with HDTV football. I will be talking to Alex
Wallau, president of ABC, tomorrow and urge you to send to me questions that you want
answered from ABC. You might recall that Alex was producer of Monday Night Football for 19
years prior to his elevation to the presidency of the network. Alex is one of the heroes
of HDTV -- a personal fan of it -- and promotes it to those within his company at
every opportunity.
With your donations I have been able to bring accounts current and secure Jeff
Hockema to take over the making of the daily guide. That now frees me to do the things you
have been asking me to do--dig into the facts and present them in Page 2. I have lined up
interviews with all of the HDTV signal providers, the big retailers (and those not so
big), the manufacturers, the MPAA, and key people from independent broadcast and
cable groups. We will soon hear their current views on HDTV. While things have been going
along quite well for HDTV -- enough to cause the rest of the world to sit up and take
notice -- the more I am back into the "news" the more I find some sticky wickets
which need to be unstuck from the light of public investigation.
Now, here are a few of your comments about today's game from ABC...

I will be showing Monday night football on 2 RCA 60 inch rear projection TV
screens at Tumbleweed's Sports Bar in Fort Worth Texas. We had about 170 people for
the Super Bowl in HDTV and I hope we have large turn outs for this year every Monday.
I believe I have a real advantage now on Monday night with HDTV.

I'm not showing it to anyone tonight. ABC is operating at 50% power from
Sutro Tower (San Francisco). We haven't had any HDTV programming from them in weeks.
The last thing I need to do is have a party and not be able to produce.

Like that does me any good...the local station in Lynchburg is not scheduled to go
digital until January 2004. Even after it does...I live at least 40 miles from them
and this isn't flat country out here. I'd need an antenna on top of a cell phone
tower to pick them up. It's a shame that DirecTV cannot carry the network HD
broadcasts, I pay for local channels and I'd pay for local HDTV as well. Thanks for the
update anyway.

Frankly, I can't think of anything more disappointing to watch in HDTV than
sports programming. Motion creates blur and thus is the antithesis of razor sharp image
reproduction. Except for the static shots, when nothing is in play, it is a complete waste
of the digital bitstream. Contrary to popular belief, 720p motion can be just as blurry as
1080i; there are simply fewer artifacts.
I have never subscribed to the belief that sports programming would propel HDTV sales.
Sports programming in HDTV has been around since 1998 with ABC MNF, and we didn't exactly
see sales rocket through the roof. People bought into HDTV after the Olympics last year
because of the colorful opening ceremonial pageantry, not for the actual events. Besides,
with most sports viewers guzzling beer, can they see clearly enough after a while to tell
the difference between HDTV and good NTSC?
Secondly, most cable systems (not to mention home satellite services) cannot delivering
their HD to viewers at the full 19.3 Mbps rate. HBO and Showtime are streaming at 12-14
Mbps. Discovery HD Theater is maybe 16 Mbps. (These measurement figures come from Charter
Cable's chief engineer in my area). I would bet that ESPN-HD and other HD sports networks
won't feed at the full bit rate either. The same may hold true for local broadcast HD
signals. Once it remodulates from QPSK or 8-VSB to cable's 256-QAM, it usually doesn't
make it to the viewer as 19.3 Mbps. And, boy oh boy, can you tell the difference!! I feel
sorry for HD set owners who never went the outdoor antenna route to observe true HDTV
b'casting in all its 3D-like glory. If most folks are going to rely on cable to give them
HDTV, they will never see it as good as it can be. I remember when HD first launched in
1998, one set manufacturer told his audience during a demonstration when the image wasn't
quite up to snuff: "Believe me, this is the worst you'll ever see it!" Guess
again!
HDTV is for the purists who seek the ultimate in high technology image reproduction, most
easily beheld with static visuals. Sorry fellow HD ditto heads, but I'll take "The
Young & The Restless" soap opera over HD sports programming any day. ESPN-HD?
Yawn!

The guys are talking about it in the booth as well. This is just what HDTV
needs for a final push. Guys will see this and then start thinking about the Super Bowl
and sales should really be up this year.

Bell ExpressVu is broadcasting the game in HDTV with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound here
in Canada. They also broadcast the CART race on Sunday in HDTV. Unfortunately, I have Star
Choice that broadcast neither in HDTV!
Later this week I plan to subscribe to Bell ExpressVu. They have 13 dedicated HDTV
channels with 2 more ready to go. They have ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS Boston (plus FOX EDTV) and
ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS Seattle (plus FOX) and CityTV Toronto plus HD Pay for view channels
(French and English) (movies, etc). HDTV Heaven!
I am sure that they will be picking up the HDTV broadcasts from Sports Net later this
month - Blue Jay baseball and NHL hockey in the winter.
