CBS SPORTSÂ BROADCAST OF 2004 U.S. OPEN TENNIS
CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE SIMULCAST IN HDTV
High Definition Simulcast Will Include All Six
Days of Coverage
NEW YORK, Sept 1, 2004 CBS Sports entire live
broadcast of the 2004 U.S. Open Tennis Championships -- Saturday,
Sept. 4 through Labor Day Monday, September 6, and again Friday,
September 10 through Sunday, September 12 -- will be simulcast in
High Definition Television, the Network announced today. While this
marks the fifth consecutive year that CBS has simulcast its coverage
of the U.S. Open in HDTV, this is the third year the Network will
expand its HDTV broadcasts to all six days of its tournament
coverage. In addition, this is the third year that the action on the
Louis Armstrong StadiumÂs Court 2 will be in HD along with the
traditional coverage of Center Court in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Once
again, a highlight of the broadcast will be the prime time womenÂs
final on Saturday evening, September 11.
In all, CBS will broadcast nearly 40 hours of U.S.
Open coverage in HDTV. The broadcast will be a single production so
that viewers at home, whether watching in High or Standard
Definition, will see the same camera angles and hear the same
action. The coverage will be produced using the highest form of
Digital Television (DTV), featuring 1,080 lines of resolution (or
2.0 million picture elements). This is the same format CBS presently
uses for all its primetime and daytime High Definition programming.
CBS Sports
is the industry leader in HDTV broadcasts. In 2004, CBS Sports will
broadcast 37
weekends of premiere event sports programming in high
definition. For the last five years, CBS has aired HD productions of
the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four and Championship Games, the
Masters® Tournament, and college football. CBS Sports also presented
the first HDTV broadcast of a PGA TOUR event at the 2001 Sony Open
and in 2004 will present an unprecedented 10 PGA TOUR events in
HDTV, including the PGA Championship for the first time in HDTV
CBS also
broadcast the 2001 and 2004 Super Bowls and all of the 2003 and 2004
AFC Playoffs in HDTV. CBS Sports was responsible for the first ever
broadcast of a professional football game in high definition format
on Sunday, November 8, 1998 when the historic broadcast featured the
AFC East Division co-leaders, Buffalo Bills against the New York
Jets live on the CBS Television Network. The game was the first of
four high definition games presented by CBS Sports during the 1998
season.
CBS
broadcasts, on average, 34 hours per week of High Definition
programming, more than any other broadcast network, and more
original HD programming per week than any other network, broadcast
or cable or satellite. One hundred and eighty-one of CBS's owned
and affiliated stations are currently broadcasting in digital,
covering approximately 97 percent of the nation.
Let’s ALL keep
watching HD Sports. Forward
