AMERICAN EXPERIENCE:
Lost in the Grand Canyon

In the summer of 1869 a one-armed Civil War veteran, John Wesley Powell, led an epic journey down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It was the last important explorationlostingrand.jpg (22990 bytes) within the continental United States. Powell wrote a literary classic about his trip, explored the region for another ten years, studied Native American cultures, and used his position as director of the U.S. Geological Survey to argue against the over development of the West.

In the spring of 1869, a thirty-five-year-old, one-armed Civil War veteran and self-taught scientist led an expedition down the Colorado River into the last uncharted territory in the United States. Ninety-nine days later, John Wesley Powell emerged from the Grand Canyon after one of the most daring journeys in American history. Transformed by his experience, Powell would forever change America's attitude toward the West. "Lost in the Grand Canyon" is an account of the dramatic quest to explore one of the most unforgiving, and breathtakingly beautiful, places on earth. Produced by Mark Davis; Joe Morton narrates, and Peter Coyote provides the voice of John Wesley Powell.[more]

GOOD NEWS FOR PBS FANS
OUR THANKS FOR THIS CONTRIBUTION FROM PETE PUTMAN

PBS will launch a new channel dedicated to high definition and digital widescreen programming in the winter of 2004 digital.-- "The PBS HD channel represents a new service under our current PBS brand. It will draw from a growing library of up to 400 hours of digital NPS programming thanks to the support from national producers in clearing the rights for the PBS HD service. We believe that the launch of a 24X7 high definition and digital widescreen programming service to replace the ‘HD Loop’ will enable stations to signal the transition from demonstration to early deployment of high definition television."

News from the desk of Mark Schubin, Internationally known and respected television engineer who provides the industry with this weekly update.

Mark Schubin...

- Follow-ups:

- The cable/consumer-electronics "plug-&-play" agreement - Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) Media Bureau chief Ken Ferree told
reporters he's not feeling any pressure to meet manufacturing cycles.
"I understand some of the parties have had some unrealistic expectations
that we were going to finish this thing in June somehow.  I don't know
whatever gave them that idea":
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dailynews/one.php?id=1270>

- The FCC notice of inquiry on interference - The Advanced
Television Systems Committee (ATSC) filed comments suggesting that
receiver standards be voluntary and noting that they're working on them:
<http://www.atsc.org/news_information/papers/ATSC_Comments_ET_03-65.pdf>

- Broadcast flag - Representative Lamar Smith, who heads the House
subcommittee theoretically in charge of intellectual-property law, says
any implementation of the broadcast flag must not adversely affect TV
viewers:

     - May 1 -
  - The Association of Public Television Stations, the FCC, and
the National Association of Broadcasters did not update their lists this
week.
- Doug Lung's RF Report in TV Technology says the FCC CDBS
database listed 377 licensed DTT stations in the U.S. as of July 19:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dlrf/one.php?id=100>

- Noncommercial WNVT in Goldvein, Virginia has asked the FCC for
permission to cease analog broadcasting and operate digital-only.  The
station's analog channel (53) is outside the U.S. DTT core:

- International H/DTV news:

- A list of consumer DTT set-top boxes available in Australia has
14 from eight manufacturers; four, from three manufacturers, are capable
of receiving HDTV:
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>

- Although it doesn't necessarily indicate anything as far as DTT
is concerned, China has chosen DVB-C for digital cable:

- NBC is getting HD promos for its shows into Best Buy, Circuit City,
and Sears stores:
<http://www.tvweek.com/advertise/072103nbc.html>

- Notes from displayLA:

- In my opening presentation, I showed an unretouched diagram from
a technical journal, depicting a light-valve video display using
electromechanical scanning, a description that could apply to the latest
laser-based proposals.  Then I slid the diagram over so the audience
could see the light source, a kerosene lamp.  The illustration was first
published in 1890.

If anyone wants a copy of my text handouts (not including that
diagram or the images of actual pixels taken from my "Pixel Pictorial"
in the December 1995 issue of Videography), drop me a line.

- Charles Poynton gave another excellent presentation on gamma --
so good that when I ran into a writer later that day, he said even HE
understood the issue now.  He was particularly good on the "level-100
problem" and how it affects such truly digital displays as DLP and
plasma.  For more on his stuff, buy his latest book, which costs
precisely $59.94.

- Plasma display panel life was now said to be about 30,000 hours
to half brightness.  That's exclusive of burn-in issues.  NEC
acknowledged that Panasonic has the blackest panels but questioned
whether that was of most importance.  The buzz about LCD (direct-view or
projection) was "more contrast please!"

- Many in the audience (including me) were quite struck by the
conditions in which video is controlled in the field for electronic
cinematography.  In one on-site photo, the match monitor could be seen
under a translucent blue tarpaulin, casting blue light everywhere.  Even
when opaque black is used, there are still reflections from grass and
stray light.

- Another oft-expressed complaint was that of a lack of standards.
A cinematographer might use one type of display when shooting, another
when looking at dailies in the field, yet another at an effects house,
another in post-production, another for "digital previews," another for
digital-cinema release, etc.  Which shows the "real" image?

- Texas Instruments offered a partial solution in a program of
certified DLP projectors and lenses (with manufacturers instructed NOT
to attempt to be better than their competitors), with feedback off the
screen compensating even for tinted projection-booth ports or colored
screens (not to mention aging lamps).  Unfortunately, as was pointed out
at the event, displays used in production and in viewing of dailies in
the field might be chosen on the basis of their weight and size, not on
their conformation to precise standards.

- FYI, these variations are neither new nor absent in the film
world.  A session on professional screening rooms described the extreme
difficulty of getting the color temperature of film projectors right.
One comment was that one needs a "truckload of reflectors" so that
lamp-and-reflector combinations can be tried and rejected until
something works.  But one screening room was perfectly calibrated for
film and digital projection until actual images were presented.  Then
the calibration of the digital projector had to be thrown off to get it
to match the film.

- We got to see the TI 2K projector at the Sony Pictures Cary Grant
Theater.  I sat in the front row, so I got to see the pixels.  If there
was some blurring mechanism, it failed to work on my visual system.  The
pixels were very clear, but they were also quite small, and I didn't
find them objectionable at all, even from that close vantage point (FYI,
that's roughly where I normally like to sit in movie theaters; I didn't
do it specifically to observe the projection up close).

- The material shown was from just-released and forthcoming Robert
Rodriguez movies ("Spy Kids 3" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico") shot
electronically.  Rodriguez talked for hours and was worth hearing
whatever your point of view on electronic cinematography (I use that
term instead of "digital cinematography" because I am not aware of any
camera not currently using analog image sensors).  His view -- CLEARLY
-- is that he LOVES shooting electronically.  He also likes to
experiment, which is easier when it's possible to see the results in
real time.  Tiny note:  He seems to favor Fujinon zoom lenses.  He even
said actors (notably Johnny Depp) like not knowing whether he's shooting
them full-figure or in extreme close-up.

- This is my personal take on what I saw (de gustibus non
disputandum):  As I mentioned, the visibility of the pixels didn't
bother me (I'm comfortable seeing screen perforations, too).  I searched
for clipping in the picture and occasionally found it, but that didn't
bother me, either.  I also saw varying amounts of video noise, and that,
too, didn't bother me.  In fact, the stark, high-contrast outdoor scenes
and the dark interiors all looked better than fine to me -- they looked
very good.  I was surprised to see what appeared to be either
registration or chroma-timing errors, but those, too, didn't bother me.

- What DID bother me was most evident in the well-lit "Spy Kids 3"
scenes and in some well-lit material in the "Once Upon A Time In Mexico"
trailer.  It was a "video look" that jarred me and affected my
suspension of disbelief.  I can't say for certain what causes that
"look," but my gut feeling is that it is a higher contrast ratio in the
upper frequency (detail) range than we are accustomed to in film.  I,
therefore, believe it can probably be filtered out.  The digital
projection appears to contribute to the effect (possibly because it is
perfectly registered, possibly because there is no shuttered dark period
-- both of those can be compensated for, too); some amount of it has
also been noticeable to me on film-shot material digitally projected.  I
am perfectly willing to accept that my feelings about this have been
colored by a half-century of watching movies and by working in the video
industry.

- Many people also attended a screening of "Pirates of the
Caribbean" at the Entertainment Technology Center's Digital Cinema Lab
at the Pacific Theater.  I had a little bit of my "video look" feeling
at the beginning but got over it.  I heard no bad comments from anyone
EXCEPT about the closing credits.  Many attendees commented to me about
all sorts of problems there.
- A few exhibit notes:
- QuVIS introduced its new server.
- Panasonic showed SIXTH-generation plasma.
- Creative Technology had a Lighthouse LED display that looked
pretty good even indoors even in a smallish room.
- Sony showed its new LCD display.
- Whatever you may think of the imagery, you've got to love
the psycho-mechanical technology of the spinning Dynascan cylindrical
display.

- All of the top-10 best-selling projection TVs (based on dollar sales
at retail) for the year ending June 30, according to NPD, were HDTV
models, but none had an integrated DTT tuner:
<click for story>

- Based on CEA figures, sales to U.S. dealers of (supposedly) non-H/DTV
projection TVs were down 50.8% for the first 27 weeks of 2003 relative
to the same period in 2002 (VCRs were down 47.1%).  My ten-week running average was down 63.8%.  Direct-view was down 5.8%.  My ten-week running
average was down 4.6%.

So-called "DTV product" sales to U.S. dealers for the 27th week
were 57,505 units.  The total for the 27-week period was 1,496,218.
"DTV products" (most of which are HDTV displays without DTT-reception
capability) still accounted for about 11.1% of the total TVs sold to
U.S. dealers this year, a percentage that remains quite stable.

- I know of one ad for a stand-alone DTT receiver this week, the Hughes
at Good Guys for $399, said to be "half-off" with certain purchases.

- The ads:  I didn't get to see the Best Buy or Circuit City ads this
week, and I saw very few of the J&R ads.  I'll try to catch up on what I
missed in next week's memo.
